Vivian's POV

"Mom, he proposed..." I swirled the pad of my finger over the silver band watching the diamond softly catching the fluorescent hospital lights.

Mom was unconscious, fully sedated to help her with the bouts of pain, pain that she would no longer have to endure once I have my hand on that trust fund.

That's why when Ethan slid over that velvet box containing the ring I had already accepted my fate, if that was what it took to keep my mom breathing.

Yes, that's what all of this is

Vivian's POVThe rain continued to pound against the pavement as Ethan carried me effortlessly toward his car. His arms were firm around me, one supporting my back, the other cradling my legs. I was acutely aware of how small I felt in his grip, how easily he held me as if I weighed nothing at all. The umbrella he had been holding was now abandoned on the ground, forgotten, as he protected me from the downpour with his own body.I didn't speak. I couldn't. My throat was raw from crying, my body trembling from the cold, my mind spinning with everything that had happened. The hospital. My mother, Derek, and now Ethan, appearing out of nowhere like some kind of guardian angel. He opened the passenger door of his sleek black car and gently lowered me into the seat. The leather was warm, a stark contrast to the cold that had seeped into my bones. Before I could say anything, he shrugged off his suit jacket and draped it over my shoulders. The fabric was heavy and warm, carrying the faint

Vivian's POVDr. Reyes was standing by the bed, reviewing a chart. She looked up when I entered, her expression gentle. "Mrs. Blackwell. Thank you for coming so quickly.""What happened?" My voice cracked. "How is she?”"She had a seizure this morning. We've stabilized her, but her vitals are weaker than before. We're monitoring her closely, but I want to be honest with you… her condition is declining."The words hit me like a blow. I reached for the chair beside the bed, sinking into it. My mother's hand was resting on the blanket, pale and thin. I reached out and took it, feeling the warmth of her skin, the faint pulse beneath."Is there anything you can do?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper."We're doing everything we can. But I want you to be prepared, Mrs. Blackwell. We can't really tell what might happen in this situation.”The tears came then, hot and silent, streaming down my cheeks. I didn't try to stop them. I just sat there, holding my mother's hand, watching the rise and

Vivian's POVDerek turned fully, that slow smile still playing on his lips. He looked the same… confident, polished, utterly full of himself. His suit was tailored perfectly, his hair styled just so. He looked like he owned the room, like he owned everything he looked at. The arrogance in his posture was still there."You can't be serious," I muttered."Vivian." He said my name like it was a song he'd been humming for years. "You look really beautiful. Marrying a rich business man suits you. You even have your own office.”"Don't." I held up a hand, stopping him before he could take another step. "Don't do that. Who even let you inside this company in the first place?” He tilted his head, amused. The corner of his mouth twitched upward, like he found this entertaining. "I came to see you. Is that a crime?""Yes. It is." I crossed my arms, keeping distance between us. The fabric of my blazer felt stiff against my skin. "You don't get to show up unannounced and uninvited Derek. Why are

Vivian's POVThe mansion was dark when I pulled into the driveway. Every window black, every room silent. I sat in the car for a moment, my hands still gripping the steering wheel, my eyes fixed on the house ahead. The engine ticked as it cooled, the only sound in the stillness.I stepped out, my heels clicking against the pavement as I walked toward the front door. The night air was cool, carrying the faint scent of jasmine from the garden. I paused at the threshold, looking back over my shoulder at the empty driveway, the quiet street beyond. Nothing. Just darkness and the occasional streetlight.I went inside, locked the door behind me, and told myself to forget about it.The kitchen was empty when I walked in. A plate of food sat on the counter, covered with plastic wrap, a note beside it in the housekeeper's handwriting: Dinner for you ma'am, if you're hungry.I wasn't. But I picked at the edges of the chicken anyway, standing at the counter in my bare feet, the silence pressing

Vivian's POVThree days passed before I finally texted him.On Thursday afternoon, sitting in my office with the city sprawled out beneath me and the silence pressing in from all sides, I decided I was overthinking this. It was just coffee, an apology coffee. Nothing more.I pulled up his contact and typed: Free tomorrow evening? His reply came within seconds. For you? Always. There's a place on Oak Street. Does seven o'clock work?See you then.Friday arrived faster than I expected.I spent the day in meetings, reviewing projects with Ethan's finance team, nodding along as they walked me through different information and calculations. By the time five o'clock rolled around, I was ready to escape. My mind kept drifting to the evening ahead, to the simple fact that for a few hours, I wouldn't have to be Mrs. Blackwell. I could just be Vivian.I changed in the office bathroom, having brought a dress in my bag that morning. It was simple… a navy blue wrap dress that fell just above the k

Vivian's POVHe was still standing at the back of the room, half-hidden behind one of the staff. He hadn't moved since our eyes met, hadn't given any indication that we knew each other.I did the same. When Ethan introduced us… "Daniel Brooks, our head of business development"I extended my hand like I had with everyone else, my expression carefully neutral."Pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Blackwell," Daniel said, his voice smooth and professional."You as well, Mr. Brooks."His handshake was warm, lingering just a fraction of a second longer than necessary. His eyes met mine, and I saw the faintest flicker of amusement there. Then he released my hand, and the moment was gone. The rest of the introductions blurred together. I nodded, smiled, said all the right things. I tried to commit their names to memory, but they slipped away almost as quickly as they were given. By the time Ethan dismissed the team, I had already forgotten half their names."Claire will show you back to your office,"
