LOGINEvelyn’s heart ached, a sharp, stinging pain that made her nose tingle. Bringing Vanessa back this time was something she’d insisted on, but it came with conditions. She couldn’t indulge Vanessa anymore, couldn’t spoil her rotten again. If she offended the wrong people, no one would be able to save her.
“Fan Aunt, I can do it myself.” Vanessa wasn’t used to such tenderness and affection.
Evelyn didn’t let go. “Vanessa, I was wrong these past few years. I didn’t come to see you.”
“…I understand.”
Stroking her hair and thin, bony shoulders, Evelyn asked what was truly on her mind, “About Julian, do you still…”
Before she could finish, Vanessa shook her head. “I don’t. I know my place. Don’t worry.”
“That’s not what I meant…”
“I know. I won’t cause any more trouble.”
Especially not the kind of big trouble that gets people killed. She wouldn’t, couldn’t, make that mistake again.
The more sincere Vanessa was, the more heartbreaking her smile became. “I’ll find a way to introduce my man to you… If we can get married, that’s the best, but if not, I won’t stay and make things difficult for you.”
Leaving Vanessa in the rain was too much. Bart’s mother brought him over early in the morning to apologize in person. Evelyn stayed downstairs to entertain them.
Vanessa had caught a bad cold and was dragged out of her hazy sleep to wash up and change into the clothes Evelyn had prepared. The housekeeper grumbled a couple of times, mainly complaining about how thin she’d become. Even the smallest-sized dress didn’t hug her waist. It had to be taken in with a few stitches before it even fit.
She was hurried downstairs. The housekeeper had been rushing, and pricked her with the needle several times. Vanessa bit her lip, not making a sound.
Downstairs, Bart's mother was pulling Bart along, apologizing to Evelyn. The sound of footsteps drifted down, and the three of them looked up. Surrounded by several pairs of eyes, Vanessa lowered her head self-consciously, slowing her pace. Evelyn went forward, took her hand, and led her over.
“This must be Vanessa?”
The Cole family had only recently risen to prominence in M City and didn’t know much about Vanessa’s past. Looking at her now, she was just a thin, quiet girl. There wasn't a trace of the arrogant and domineering woman everyone described.
Bart's mother stood up, reaching for Vanessa’s hand, but she stood still, like a statue.
“It’s all my fault for not raising my child properly. Bart is just like this, always joking around.” Bart's mother gave Bart a tug, urging him, “Aren’t you going to get up and apologize to Vanessa?”
Bart casually straightened his collar, glanced at Vanessa, and sneered dismissively. He had a dimple on his left cheek, adding to his unrestrained air. “Sorry.”
In the past, Vanessa would never have even looked twice at a man like this.
She had dreamed countless times of marrying Julian, becoming his bride, bearing his children, thinking of him through so many cold and windy nights, but it had all ended in nothing.
Facing Bart standing in front of her, Vanessa forced a weak smile. “It’s okay.”
Bart paused slightly, rubbed his nose, and turned his face away, no longer looking at her. His whole body radiated awkwardness.
Evelyn did her best to bring them together, sending them to dinner alone with the driver.
On the way, Bart sat on the other side, propping his face up with his hand, watching the street scenes outside. Vanessa sat next to him, well-behaved, with her hands placed on her lap, silently looking down.
This was completely different from the Vanessa he’d heard about.
The people he’d talked to described Vanessa as willful and arrogant, someone who always tried to attract attention, loud and obnoxious, relying on her family’s power and influence to steal the spotlight in every situation.
But the Vanessa in front of him was quiet and reserved, like a frail white jasmine with a light, subtle fragrance. Even the color of its stem was dull. If it were buried in the corner of a flowerbed, it might wither away without anyone noticing.
They arrived at the restaurant.
Ignoring Vanessa, Bart got out of the car and went inside, ordering a lot of food for himself without asking her preferences or dietary restrictions.
After the waiter took the menu and closed the door to the private room, he cut to the chase. "Fan Aunt wants me to marry you. You know that, right?"
The woman's long eyelashes looked wet, curled, and drooping, hiding her eyes, only revealing her timidity.
“…I know.”
“I won’t marry you.” Bart was young, at the age when he was most eager to play. Asking him to marry a woman with a tarnished reputation was worse than death. “If you know what’s good for you, you’ll make it clear to Fan Aunt as soon as possible, so she doesn’t have my mom bothering me.”
Every move of the Voss family was under Julian's surveillance. He knew that Adrian was injured and Vanessa had run away, but he couldn't get away himself. The Old Master had injured his back and confined him to the Frost family, thanks to Maria's instigation.Jerry received the news and came, wanting to take Julian to the hospital, but the Old Master had confined him to the house. They had a family doctor, so at least his life wasn't in immediate danger."How is Vanessa?"After something like that happened, she must be the one having the hardest time."Miss Vanessa returned to her own home. It seems she was beaten at the Voss family's."Hearing this, Julian put on his clothes, ignoring the family's orders to leave. Maria was guarding downstairs, rarely seeing Julian stumble, she naturally wanted to kick him when he was down. Seeing him come downstairs, she quickly stood up. "Julian, are you going out? Your great-grandfather said you can't go out.""Get out of my way."Julian didn't ta
This wasn't a rental apartment, nor a hotel. The bedding was soft, the surroundings felt oddly familiar. She strained to open her eyes, and saw the ceiling from her childhood memories. Thinking it was all a dream, the door opened and someone sat down beside the bed.It was Evelyn. She was crying.Vanessa's eyelashes fluttered, showing signs of awakening, "Fan Auntie…"Her arms and legs ached, her bones felt like they’d been rearranged. The discomfort throughout her body told her this wasn't a dream."Vanessa." Evelyn leaned closer, "You're awake?"Vanessa sat up, the hangover bringing a splitting headache. Last night's memories were a hazy jumble. She looked at Evelyn, "...How did I get here?"Last night was Evelyn's birthday, she went to the party, had some drinks, then went to find Adrian. What happened after that?"You got drunk yesterday." Evelyn couldn't bear to tell her the truth, not wanting to hurt her, "So I had Perry bring you here. Are you hungry? I'll have someone prepare
The reception was almost over.Vanessa and Julian didn’t reappear.Perry was the first to notice something was wrong. He left early and searched the entire hotel, almost demanding to see the security footage. Seeing him running around breathlessly, Cliff sat back and watched the show. Maria adjusted her shawl, leaning closer to Cliff’s ear, “What’s going on?”Most of the guests had already left.Maria and Cliff were waiting for Julian.“I don’t know.”Cliff vaguely guessed it had something to do with Vanessa, with Julian being dragged in as a bonus. He glanced at the head table.Maria scoffed, “Who do the Voss’ think they are? I knew I shouldn't have come to put up with this.”“What's wrong?” Cliff acted like a dutiful son, pouring tea and offering water to Maria.“It’s Evelyn. I went to say hello, and she was so cold and indifferent.”Evelyn knew Julian’s birth mother and looked down on Maria’s underhanded tactics to get where she was. It was only natural that she would treat her dis
The location was arranged by Adrian. Julian was at the same table as Vanessa, who was with Evelyn. Perry had taken his seat early.Julian tapped his cigarette ash, glancing at Perry's face in the reflection of the porcelain white dessert plate on the table. A typical pretty boy, good at deceiving people.Especially a stupid woman like Vanessa, it was effortless for him.Returning from Evelyn's side, Vanessa walked towards Perry, her eyes filled with wariness as she swept past Julian. Before she could sit down, she was suddenly called away.Separated by two tables, in the changing lights of the banquet hall, Vanessa standing in this environment, a sense of constraint and unease arose, a look that the Voss family's eldest daughter would never have. But she no longer bore the Voss name.Suddenly called away by a staff member and assigned to another table, these were not good people.Vanessa wanted to leave, but someone beside her grabbed her tightly, "Isn't this Vanessa? Long time no see
After saying hello to Evelyn, Julian went downstairs. Cliff stood in the noisy crowd, narrowing his eyes, then scanned the room. He met Perry's eyes, who was helping to greet guests not far away. The two walked to a secluded spot in unison.Cliff took out a cigarette, the most common kind. He wasn't Julian, not the most favored child of the Frost family. In the eyes of the old patriarch and Frost's father, he was mostly Julian's slave, or a stepping stone for him to climb upon. Even the cigarettes he smoked were a grade below. Both were from the Frost family, yet their status and position were worlds apart."Where's Vanessa? Did you come alone?"Perry lowered his eyes, adopting a gentlemanly demeanor. "I came with Mr. Voss. Vanessa will be here later.""How's your relationship been lately? Good?""Of course, I'm about to propose to her."These words sounded overly confident to Cliff. He suppressed a faint, mocking smile. "Is that so? Congratulations, then. But you should be careful of
"What exactly do you mean?"Adrian wasn't stupid. He exhaled smoke, scrutinizing and contemplating, then chuckled after a moment. "Julian, you're quite something. You couldn't stand her back then, and now you're suddenly smitten?"This wasn't a big deal."What, do you need me to fetch her to ease your boredom?"With someone like Julian, not denying was often the same as admitting.Leila hid outside the door, tears streaming down her face. She was fragile to begin with, hadn't experienced such turmoil. Suddenly taken in by Julian, she lost her peaceful life, only to become a plaything they could send back and forth. But that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was Vanessa.Standing in front of the music store, Vanessa held an umbrella and gazed at a violin inside for a long time. The violin had a clear price tag, a sum she'd have trouble scraping together. The agreed-upon lesson time had arrived. She reluctantly left.As Leila was about to get out of the car, the driver hurried to ho
