LOGINVanessa didn't feel ashamed at all, and bit her ruby-red lip as she replied, "Who told you to hide from me and not meet me? I had no choice but to wait for you here."
"I'm hiding from you. Don't you know what that means?"
She was so innocent back then, and truly shook her head.
Julian had already maintained due gentlemanly decorum and explained to her, "Because I don't want to see you."
"You can pretend you don't see me, but I just want to see you a few more times, even just once." Vanessa had to admire her own strong self-esteem. Julian's expression was so dark, yet she could still act spoiled in front of him: "Julian, I really miss you. Don't you miss me at all?"
Returning to the old place, it had been renovated. The second floor was gone, and the shadow of her chasing after Julian wouldn't be there anymore.
Adrian didn't accompany Vanessa into the private room. It was empty, without food or tea.
"Wait here. Someone will come to meet you soon."
Vanessa stood with pursed lips, catching a hint of cunning in Adrian's eyes. She nodded and said okay, then sat down on a chair, without asking a single extra word.
But the person Adrian mentioned hadn't arrived yet. Sunrise and sunset happened in the blink of an eye.
Dusk fell, and the diners here changed batch after batch, before Adrian finally called, directing her to another location.
Vanessa glanced at the address. It was a private club under Julian's name.
As soon as the sun set, it started to rain. She chose a private room with the best view. Rain streaks covered the windows. Julian stood by the window. With a downward glance, he could see the weak figure jogging into the entrance below.
Vanessa hadn't brought an umbrella, and her shoulders were soaked through. A few strands of wet hair stuck to her temples. She hugged herself and stood at the entrance of the club, wanting to go in, but was stopped by the security guard. She called Adrian, but couldn't get through.
The cold rain and wind soaked through her clothes, making her shiver.
The people upstairs watched her embarrassment and disarray as if it were a good show. Adrian walked to the window, glanced down, and said coldly, "Let's see how much longer she can keep up the act."
Two heartless faces were reflected on the window. Julian lightly swirled the wine in his glass. "She really waited all day?"
"Absolutely true." Adrian had even sent people to monitor her. "Her family has arranged a marriage for her, to meet the youngest son of the Cole family. You know Bart Cole, a spoiled playboy. The Cole family agreed to return a favor, but Bart didn't agree. He refused to go no matter what."
Evelyn had gone to great lengths for this imposter.
Adrian couldn't agree. Before Vanessa's true identity was revealed, it was one thing for Evelyn to dote on her, but even without that blood relationship, she still treated her like her own daughter.
Sending her away these past three years, Evelyn had cried every day. At her worst, she even suffered from depression.
Julian downed a mouthful of wine, the spiciness making his voice hoarse and heavy. "Bart is next door?"
Adrian: "Of course. Probably with another group, indulging in pleasure."
"Go inform him."
"Huh?"
Julian's silhouette was submerged in the dimness, his expression hidden. His fingertip gently brushed against the rim of the glass. Adrian didn't understand. "If he goes down, that imposter will be smug again."
"He won't go down." Julian was certain, but he would send someone else.
What was so fun about watching someone get rained on?
The exciting part was yet to come.
Adrian left, leaving Julian alone in the private room. He leaned against the window, flicked open a metal lighter, cupped the flame in his palm, lit a cigarette, and as he waited, he looked down again. The scene that entered his eyes stunned him.
Downstairs.
Vanessa stepped down one of the stairs. She carefully reached out her hand, letting the rainwater accumulate in her palm, and then brought it to her lips, taking small sips.
That image made Julian think of a white, yet dirty, stray cat licking up sewage by the roadside.
But he wouldn't offer help.
After all, beneath Vanessa's soft fur were sharp fangs and claws. He could easily get scratched if he wasn't careful. Having learned from past experiences, Julian wouldn't soften easily, but the shock in his heart was still hard to suppress.
After swallowing that mouthful of rainwater, the door behind her opened automatically. The person who came out wasn't Adrian, and it wasn't Bart, who Evelyn described as talented and handsome.
Vanessa recognized the leading woman. She had offended her in the past.
If one had to say she offended her, it wasn't quite accurate. It was just that she had won against her in a violin competition. She cried in the backstage, Vanessa couldn't stand it, and rebuked her in front of everyone, "Do you think this is kindergarten? You cry because you can't get first place? Waiting for someone to give you candy to comfort you?"
What goes around comes around. Now it was her turn.
The woman walked in front of her, her eyes raised slightly with contempt. She crossed her arms, stood firmly, and glanced up and down at her. "Look, who is this?"
Every move of the Voss family was under Julian's surveillance. He knew that Adrian was injured and Vanessa had run away, but he couldn't get away himself. The Old Master had injured his back and confined him to the Frost family, thanks to Maria's instigation.Jerry received the news and came, wanting to take Julian to the hospital, but the Old Master had confined him to the house. They had a family doctor, so at least his life wasn't in immediate danger."How is Vanessa?"After something like that happened, she must be the one having the hardest time."Miss Vanessa returned to her own home. It seems she was beaten at the Voss family's."Hearing this, Julian put on his clothes, ignoring the family's orders to leave. Maria was guarding downstairs, rarely seeing Julian stumble, she naturally wanted to kick him when he was down. Seeing him come downstairs, she quickly stood up. "Julian, are you going out? Your great-grandfather said you can't go out.""Get out of my way."Julian didn't ta
This wasn't a rental apartment, nor a hotel. The bedding was soft, the surroundings felt oddly familiar. She strained to open her eyes, and saw the ceiling from her childhood memories. Thinking it was all a dream, the door opened and someone sat down beside the bed.It was Evelyn. She was crying.Vanessa's eyelashes fluttered, showing signs of awakening, "Fan Auntie…"Her arms and legs ached, her bones felt like they’d been rearranged. The discomfort throughout her body told her this wasn't a dream."Vanessa." Evelyn leaned closer, "You're awake?"Vanessa sat up, the hangover bringing a splitting headache. Last night's memories were a hazy jumble. She looked at Evelyn, "...How did I get here?"Last night was Evelyn's birthday, she went to the party, had some drinks, then went to find Adrian. What happened after that?"You got drunk yesterday." Evelyn couldn't bear to tell her the truth, not wanting to hurt her, "So I had Perry bring you here. Are you hungry? I'll have someone prepare
The reception was almost over.Vanessa and Julian didn’t reappear.Perry was the first to notice something was wrong. He left early and searched the entire hotel, almost demanding to see the security footage. Seeing him running around breathlessly, Cliff sat back and watched the show. Maria adjusted her shawl, leaning closer to Cliff’s ear, “What’s going on?”Most of the guests had already left.Maria and Cliff were waiting for Julian.“I don’t know.”Cliff vaguely guessed it had something to do with Vanessa, with Julian being dragged in as a bonus. He glanced at the head table.Maria scoffed, “Who do the Voss’ think they are? I knew I shouldn't have come to put up with this.”“What's wrong?” Cliff acted like a dutiful son, pouring tea and offering water to Maria.“It’s Evelyn. I went to say hello, and she was so cold and indifferent.”Evelyn knew Julian’s birth mother and looked down on Maria’s underhanded tactics to get where she was. It was only natural that she would treat her dis
The location was arranged by Adrian. Julian was at the same table as Vanessa, who was with Evelyn. Perry had taken his seat early.Julian tapped his cigarette ash, glancing at Perry's face in the reflection of the porcelain white dessert plate on the table. A typical pretty boy, good at deceiving people.Especially a stupid woman like Vanessa, it was effortless for him.Returning from Evelyn's side, Vanessa walked towards Perry, her eyes filled with wariness as she swept past Julian. Before she could sit down, she was suddenly called away.Separated by two tables, in the changing lights of the banquet hall, Vanessa standing in this environment, a sense of constraint and unease arose, a look that the Voss family's eldest daughter would never have. But she no longer bore the Voss name.Suddenly called away by a staff member and assigned to another table, these were not good people.Vanessa wanted to leave, but someone beside her grabbed her tightly, "Isn't this Vanessa? Long time no see
After saying hello to Evelyn, Julian went downstairs. Cliff stood in the noisy crowd, narrowing his eyes, then scanned the room. He met Perry's eyes, who was helping to greet guests not far away. The two walked to a secluded spot in unison.Cliff took out a cigarette, the most common kind. He wasn't Julian, not the most favored child of the Frost family. In the eyes of the old patriarch and Frost's father, he was mostly Julian's slave, or a stepping stone for him to climb upon. Even the cigarettes he smoked were a grade below. Both were from the Frost family, yet their status and position were worlds apart."Where's Vanessa? Did you come alone?"Perry lowered his eyes, adopting a gentlemanly demeanor. "I came with Mr. Voss. Vanessa will be here later.""How's your relationship been lately? Good?""Of course, I'm about to propose to her."These words sounded overly confident to Cliff. He suppressed a faint, mocking smile. "Is that so? Congratulations, then. But you should be careful of
"What exactly do you mean?"Adrian wasn't stupid. He exhaled smoke, scrutinizing and contemplating, then chuckled after a moment. "Julian, you're quite something. You couldn't stand her back then, and now you're suddenly smitten?"This wasn't a big deal."What, do you need me to fetch her to ease your boredom?"With someone like Julian, not denying was often the same as admitting.Leila hid outside the door, tears streaming down her face. She was fragile to begin with, hadn't experienced such turmoil. Suddenly taken in by Julian, she lost her peaceful life, only to become a plaything they could send back and forth. But that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was Vanessa.Standing in front of the music store, Vanessa held an umbrella and gazed at a violin inside for a long time. The violin had a clear price tag, a sum she'd have trouble scraping together. The agreed-upon lesson time had arrived. She reluctantly left.As Leila was about to get out of the car, the driver hurried to ho
