The scenery along the way was both strange and familiar. Icy rain, like beans, fell from the sky, blurring the car window. Vanessa Brooks looked out, both apprehensive and curious.

So much had changed, including her.

Three years had passed. The face reflected in the car window was no longer full and round. The baby fat was gone, and coupled with years of barely surviving, Vanessa didn't have an ounce of extra flesh on her face. Her face was a slender, delicate oval, her eyebrows thin and curved. Years of malnutrition had given her skin a sallow complexion, and her nose was dotted with freckles.

"How have you been these past few years?" The man in the seat beside her was shrouded in shadow, gently stroking the button on his shirt, his tone more like that of an interrogator questioning a prisoner.

Vanessa's dry, yellowed hair, the frostbite on her earlobes, and her cheap clothing all testified to how badly she had fared.

Her hand fell, picking at the small fuzz balls on the cuff of her old sweater. Hesitantly, she said, "Fine."

"I suppose," Adrian Voss sighed, "You're still alive, after all. Some people died because of you."

"...I'm sorry."

If those people saw her miserable state now, they would probably secretly think she deserved it, that she had brought it upon herself. She should have known better than to provoke that vengeful man.

She had also caused the death of the woman he loved most. Otherwise, why would she have been banished and fallen into such a wretched state?

The car stopped outside the Voss family's old mansion.

The driver held up an umbrella and opened the door, escorting Vanessa under its shelter. Adrian walked ahead, one hand buried in his pants pocket, striding directly into the Voss family's gate.

Vanessa followed Adrian cautiously. She was familiar with the air, the bricks and tiles, the flowers and plants here. This was the place where she had lived for nineteen years. Walking in again felt like a lifetime ago.

The rain continued, drumming noisily on the umbrella, mingled with the heavy sound of footsteps.

Vanessa kept her head down, unaware.

Suddenly, Adrian stopped ahead. "Julian."

Julian Frost held a black umbrella. His smile was there, but his eyes were indifferent and distant. Since the incident three years ago, he had become so taciturn. He simply "Mmm"ed, his gaze passing over Adrian.

Hearing this name again, Vanessa thought she would be agitated, eager to catch a glimpse of him. But none of that happened.

Not even a hint of nervousness surfaced.

So this was what it was like after your heart had turned to ashes, so calm. Her mind had already relaxed, but then she was swept by that almost imperceptible cold gaze.

It was Julian.

In the misty rain, one was refined and noble, the other handsome and somber. In terms of family background, appearance, talent, and character, they were evenly matched. Since childhood, they had been close friends, and wherever they went, they were like a striking painting.

In the past, one was her brother, the other was the man she was obsessed with.

Now, they were both her enemies.

Her hand weakened, and the umbrella tilted slightly. Hidden beneath it, Vanessa, out of politeness, still addressed him, "Mr. Frost."

When she was surnamed Voss, she would never have called Julian that. "Mr. Frost" created a distance of a thousand mountains and rivers, no longer the sweet "Julian" she had once called him, one after another.

"When did you come back?" Julian's question was devoid of warmth, mixed with the rain, chilling to the bone.

Adrian said with some amusement, "The family heard that her biological father had accidentally fallen into the river and died, so they brought her back. What a disaster to bring back. I wonder who else she'll kill this time to be satisfied."

He glanced at Julian and laughed, "You have to be careful, be careful not to get entangled again."

In the past, Vanessa had indeed pursued Julian relentlessly, finding out his preferences, collecting the cigarettes he had touched, creating countless opportunities for chance encounters, all in order to get closer to him.

Everyone in the circle knew that she liked Julian, and they also knew that Julian loathed her.

Otherwise, after her background was exposed, he wouldn't have only refused to help her but also used various means to almost kill her.

If Adrian was the second person who hated her the most, Julian was the first. His sinister gaze was as sharp as a knife, piercing through the umbrella, as if to flay Vanessa alive. "Really? She dares?"

They had a family doctor, so at least his life wasn't in immediate danger."How is Vanessa?"After something like that happened, she must be the one having the hardest time."Miss Vanessa returned to her own home. It seems she was beaten at the Voss family's."Hearing this, Julian put on his clothes, ignoring the family's orders to leave. Maria was guarding downstairs, rarely seeing Julian stumble, she naturally wanted to kick him when he was down. Seeing him come downstairs, she quickly stood up. "Julian, are you going out? Your great-grandfather said you can't go out.""Get out of my way."Julian didn't ta

This wasn't a rental apartment, nor a hotel. The bedding was soft, the surroundings felt oddly familiar. She strained to open her eyes, and saw the ceiling from her childhood memories. Thinking it was all a dream, the door opened and someone sat down beside the bed.It was Evelyn. She was crying.Vanessa's eyelashes fluttered, showing signs of awakening, "Fan Auntie…"Her arms and legs ached, her bones felt like they’d been rearranged. The discomfort throughout her body told her this wasn't a dream."Vanessa." Evelyn leaned closer, "You're awake?"Vanessa sat up, the hangover bringing a splitting headache. Last night's memories were a hazy jumble. She looked at Evelyn, "...How did I get here?"Last night was Evelyn's birthday, she went to the party, had some drinks, then went to find Adrian. What happened after that?"You got drunk yesterday." Evelyn couldn't bear to tell her the truth, not wanting to hurt her, "So I had Perry bring you here. Are you hungry? I'll have someone prepare

The reception was almost over.Vanessa and Julian didn’t reappear.Perry was the first to notice something was wrong. He left early and searched the entire hotel, almost demanding to see the security footage. Seeing him running around breathlessly, Cliff sat back and watched the show. Maria adjusted her shawl, leaning closer to Cliff’s ear, “What’s going on?”Most of the guests had already left.Maria and Cliff were waiting for Julian.“I don’t know.”Cliff vaguely guessed it had something to do with Vanessa, with Julian being dragged in as a bonus. He glanced at the head table.Maria scoffed, “Who do the Voss’ think they are? I knew I shouldn't have come to put up with this.”“What's wrong?” Cliff acted like a dutiful son, pouring tea and offering water to Maria.“It’s Evelyn. I went to say hello, and she was so cold and indifferent.”Evelyn knew Julian’s birth mother and looked down on Maria’s underhanded tactics to get where she was. It was only natural that she would treat her dis

The location was arranged by Adrian. Julian was at the same table as Vanessa, who was with Evelyn. Perry had taken his seat early.Julian tapped his cigarette ash, glancing at Perry's face in the reflection of the porcelain white dessert plate on the table. A typical pretty boy, good at deceiving people.Especially a stupid woman like Vanessa, it was effortless for him.Returning from Evelyn's side, Vanessa walked towards Perry, her eyes filled with wariness as she swept past Julian. Before she could sit down, she was suddenly called away.Separated by two tables, in the changing lights of the banquet hall, Vanessa standing in this environment, a sense of constraint and unease arose, a look that the Voss family's eldest daughter would never have. But she no longer bore the Voss name.Suddenly called away by a staff member and assigned to another table, these were not good people.Vanessa wanted to leave, but someone beside her grabbed her tightly, "Isn't this Vanessa? After saying hello to Evelyn, Julian went downstairs. Cliff stood in the noisy crowd, narrowing his eyes, then scanned the room. He met Perry's eyes, who was helping to greet guests not far away. The two walked to a secluded spot in unison.Cliff took out a cigarette, the most common kind. He wasn't Julian, not the most favored child of the Frost family. In the eyes of the old patriarch and Frost's father, he was mostly Julian's slave, or a stepping stone for him to climb upon. Even the cigarettes he smoked were a grade below. Both were from the Frost family, yet their status and position were worlds apart."Where's Vanessa? Did you come alone?"Perry lowered his eyes, adopting a gentlemanly demeanor. "I came with Mr. Voss. Vanessa will be here later.""How's your relationship been lately? Good?""Of course, I'm about to propose to her."These words sounded overly confident to Cliff. He suppressed a faint, mocking smile. "Is that so? Congratulations, then. But you should be careful of

"What exactly do you mean?"Adrian wasn't stupid. He exhaled smoke, scrutinizing and contemplating, then chuckled after a moment. "Julian, you're quite something. You couldn't stand her back then, and now you're suddenly smitten?"This wasn't a big deal."What, do you need me to fetch her to ease your boredom?"With someone like Julian, not denying was often the same as admitting.Leila hid outside the door, tears streaming down her face. She was fragile to begin with, hadn't experienced such turmoil.
