Chapter 5 Pursuit Of Happiness

Susan in front of her suddenly seemed a little strange to Judy. That look and tone, as if she would become the most heinous criminal if she interfered.

"Have you got a boyfriend? How come you never mentioned him before? What does your boyfriend do, where is he from, and did he ask you to move in? When a man says 'I'll take care of you,' it could just mean meager meals, women need to work to have confidence. If you get deceived, with your gentle nature, these men love to pick on someone like you to bully..."

"Judy, is that how you see me?" Susan interrupted her.

Judy was taken aback and explained, "No, that's not what I meant..."

Susan interrupted again, "He won't deceive me, he's a local, his family is rich, he runs a company. Finding a good man is more important than finding a good job. If you find the right man, life won't be as hard.

Women are supposed to live comfortably; earning money is a man's job. I don't have your abilities, and I'm not as pretty as you. I just want to find a good man to marry, and that would be enough for me."

Their concepts were completely different.

After the conversation reached this point, Judy couldn't very well stop her and said, "I'm happy you could find a good partner, Susan. I hope you're happy. Why don't you bring your boyfriend out some time, let us meet him — you know, the one who stole my best friend."

"He's very busy. I'll introduce him when he's free. As long as you support me, I'll definitely be happy." Susan lied casually as she didn't dare to let Judy know her boyfriend was Lewis.

"As long as he's good to you, of course, I'll support you." Judy asked, "When are you moving? Do you need my help?"

Judy was uneasy, convinced Susan had been tricked. Nowadays, there are too many scammers and bad men, duping their girlfriends into cohabitation, and once pregnant, they're at their mercy.

"No need, he'll have his assistant help with moving." Susan said casually while peeling potatoes and tentatively asked, "Judy, you work at Kayle Group as an intern, so you probably don't see your boss often, right?"

"Not easily before." Judy spoke helplessly, "But now I am likely to see him every day. I got promoted to the secretarial department and now I'm Lewis's secretary. Susan, I just told you, I got a promotion, didn't you hear me?"

Susan panicked internally and dropped a potato, "You're Lewis's secretary now?"

"Yeah." Judy worried, "It’s a surprise to me too. I don't know why Lewis chose me to be his secretary. Leo said that maybe it's because I look inconspicuous. When a male colleague flirted with me, I casually said I had a fiancé. Maybe Lewis sees me as safe-looking and engaged, so I pose no threat to him."

"Judy, do you like Lewis? Could you fall for him?" Susan asked urgently.

Judy was puzzled by Susan's reaction and laughed, "Susan, what’s gotten into you? Like Lewis? He's on top of the pyramid, not from my world."

"That's good then," Susan replied, relieved, but inadvertently let something slip.

Judy didn't understand, "Susan, what do you mean? What's good?"

Susan's eyes darted away as she picked up the potato and started peeling again, masking her fluster, "Lewis is handsome and rich, and there must be many girls who like him. I was just worried about you falling for him. Their family is wealthy, they would never accept us girls from the bottom. I was worried you'd get hurt."

"Don't worry, I have self-awareness." Judy didn't think much of it and slightly smiled, "I heard the girls who made it to Lewis's bed all disappeared later on. Those diamond-level men, it's better to keep your distance."

The speaker was unintentional, the listener attentive.

Susan felt guilty and Judy’s words felt like a mockery, a jab at her lack of self-awareness.

Susan was also ashamed of her duplicity, urging Judy not to fall for Lewis while she herself aimed for wealth.

Susan didn't dare ask about what happened the night before. She couldn't bear to burst that bubble.

Fate granted her a dream of riches, gifting her with a handsome wealthy man. She had to seize this chance.

It was Judy who said she didn't like Lewis, so couldn't blame Susan for taking the wrong step.
