At the hotel

Nicole smirked when she read Asher's text.

"Sorry I couldn't make it to the bridal shop. I've been busy with meetings. Take two weeks off work, look after your mom, and make the wedding plans."

If she hadn't left the company when she did, she might still have been waiting for him for hours while he reunited with his old crush.

Busy?

Yeah, he'd been busy with his crush.

She waited all evening for Lisa's response, but none came. Instead, another post appeared on Lisa's social media account.

It was a photo of Asher and Zara holding hands at the company's cocktail party.

The camera had captured Asher glancing sideways at Zara, his gaze tender and affectionate.

Nicole had never seen him look at her that way.

It was obvious that he loved this woman.

Being with Zara was probably the happiest moment of his life, unlike his relationship with Nicole, which had only ever been bound by duty.

More photos followed throughout the evening.

In one caption, Lisa wrote:

"An outstanding President and his Vice President."

The next morning, Nicole was preparing to check out of the hotel when her phone rang.

It was Lisa.

Reluctantly, she answered.

"Hi, Nicole. How are you today? Sorry I couldn't respond to your message yesterday. I was quite busy."

Nicole nearly laughed.

Busy?

Of course she was.

Like everyone else, Lisa had probably been enjoying the cocktail party with her colleagues.

"Yeah, I figured," Nicole replied flatly.

After all, her best friend seemed to be having plenty of fun with her ex-fiancé and his crush.

How could she not?

"You said we needed to talk..." Lisa trailed off.

Truthfully, this was exactly what she wanted.

She had noticed from her notifications that Nicole had viewed all her posts the previous evening, especially the intimate photos of Asher and Zara.

Anyone who didn't know about Nicole's relationship with Asher would have assumed Zara was his girlfriend.

Now Lisa was waiting to see Nicole's reaction.

"It won't be necessary anymore," Nicole replied.

There was no point crying over spilled milk.

Asher had already made his choice.

And Lisa had chosen to celebrate it.

Why should she keep talking about it?

Lisa was caught off guard.

"Are you sure?" she asked.

She couldn't understand Nicole.

She had posted those photos deliberately, knowing Nicole would see them.

And now Nicole was acting as though none of it mattered.

Was she really that naïve?

Asher had specifically instructed Lisa not to tell Nicole anything about what had happened at the company.

Lisa had agreed.

But technically, he had only told her not to say anything.

Posting pictures wasn't the same thing.

Seeing those photos should have been enough for Nicole to understand exactly what had happened in her absence.

Yet she showed no reaction at all.

At this point, Lisa wouldn't even be surprised if Nicole returned to work and willingly accepted working under Dr. Morris in the position that should have been hers.

"Yeah," Nicole replied simply before ending the call.

Without another word, she slipped her phone into her handbag and headed toward the lobby.

As she was checking out, she stumbled upon Asher and Zara.

They were holding hands as they emerged from the hotel's VIP section.

Asher noticed her immediately.

For a brief second, hesitation flickered across his face before disappearing just as quickly.

He walked toward her, his gaze dropping to the suitcase beside her.

Nicole thought she should be angry.

But strangely, she wasn't.

Her eyes briefly moved to their intertwined hands before she turned to the receptionist.

"Thank you," she said politely before stepping away.

In all their years together, she couldn't remember Asher ever holding her hand like that.

And leaving a hotel together so early in the morning?

What exactly had happened between them?

Then again, it wasn't her concern anymore.

Not in the slightest.

"Miss Jason."

Asher followed her outside, still holding Zara's hand.

Nicole paused and turned around.

Not to look at him.

To look at them.

The two of them.

Still hand in hand.

A quiet chuckle escaped her lips.

"Mr. Strong, what can I do for you?"

She noticed his eyes darken slightly.

A trace of uncertainty crossed his expression.

Why was she acting so indifferent?

Why wasn't she upset after seeing him with another woman at a hotel?

Earlier that morning, Zara had called him and asked for a ride to the office because she hadn't hired a chauffeur yet.

He could have easily sent his personal driver.

Instead, he chose to pick her up himself.

Any opportunity to spend time alone with Zara was precious to him.

"Oh, you must be Miss Nicole Jason, Director of the Design Department."

Zara stepped forward with a graceful smile.

"I'm Dr. Zara Morris, the new Vice President of Strong Business Group."

The previous day, Zara had heard plenty about Nicole after joining the company.

She had even seen Nicole's portrait displayed in her office.

The moment she saw her that morning, she recognized her as the woman whose position she had taken.

And not just her position.

Several long-serving employees had hinted that Nicole and Asher shared a special relationship.

Asher was someone Zara had known since childhood.

They had grown up together.

And she knew there was very little he would ever refuse her.

Still holding Asher's hand, Zara extended her free hand toward Nicole.

Nicole glanced at the offered hand.

Then her gaze shifted to the fingers intertwined with Asher's.

Finally, she looked back at Asher.

Completely ignoring Zara's gesture.

"Was there something you wanted to say?" she asked calmly.

Zara's smile stiffened.

Asher glanced between the two women.

Then he looked at Zara.

"Can you wait for me in the car?" he asked gently.

Zara forced a smile and released his hand.

Before turning away, she shot Nicole a sharp look.

"Sure."

She walked toward the parking lot.

Her designer dress hugged her figure perfectly, and the heels she wore created crisp click-clack sounds that echoed across the pavement.

Nicole had to admit that Zara was stunning.

Blonde.

Elegant.

Sophisticated.

The kind of woman who naturally drew attention wherever she went.

The kind of woman men couldn't help glancing back at more than once.

Perhaps that was why Asher had never forgotten her.

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    The drive

Nicole waited for William to call her. He didn't. The day at work passed uneventfully, and there was no issue at all. Nobody seemed to know what happened with Marcus and all that unpleasant stuff, and Nicole was glad. Her nerves finally calmed, and her racing heart eased back into its normal rhythm as she worked. William had called her when he got back to the main company that he was no longer on the road, and that he was going to call her later. But it was already the end of work hours, and he still had not called her. It was not entirely unusual, because Nicole knew that things might be busy for him at work. So she refused to panic or stress about it. Instead, she sent him a short text before she left her office, telling him to call her or let her know when she can call. By the time Nicole got home, William still hadn't called her or responded to her text. She took a bath and prepared dinner, glancing at her pho

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    Emergency!

“Did you do it?” William asked his brother as soon as Wilson walked in. Wilson raised his eyebrows at his tense twin, but said nothing. Instead, he sat down and took a long sip of his coffee before he responded. “William, you do realise that I have been running around all weekend because of you, right? The least you can do is let me have my coffee in peace before asking me any question.”William ran a hand through his hair sheepishly. “You are right. I am so sorry. I don’t know why I am this tense. I just… Nicole was so scared this morning on her way to work. She was so anxious and I hated it. So I just need to know that that bastard has been put away. My baby needs some good news to cheer her up.”Wilson shook his head. “People in love are so annoying,” he muttered, audible enough for his brother to hear, before he leaned back on his chair. “Sit down, take a sip of my coffee and calm down. Then I will talk.” William was high strung wi

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    Do you love me?

Do you love me?Trisha didn't tell Asher about the call she got from Zara. She had intentionally picked the call in order to make Zara a little bit jealous and maybe make her anxious about her husband being with another woman, but Zara had sounded so completely chill. Like it didn't matter to her anymore. Like she had a plan. And from her last words about the friendly reminder or whatnot, Trisha was sure that Zara was planning something. She ought to be. From the way she was so calm on the call last night, that was the only logical explanation. Zara had a plan, and the thought made Trisha’s blood hot. Resolve tightened in her chest, and as dawn broke through the sky, as the first rays of the sun filtered into the bedroom, Trisha made up her mind. If Zara had a plan to take Asher back, then Trisha had to stop her. It was only rational for Asher to remain with the woman who made him feel at peace the most, t

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    Camaraderie.

Nicole was crazily nervous about going back to work once the weekend ended. Her heart continued to palpitate in her chest despite all of her efforts to remain calm. What if news had somehow spread and Marcus had managed to tell horrible lies about her? What if, once she got to work, everything turned into the familiar nightmare of whispers and harsh, undeserving glares just like it happened back in the main company?Worse, what if Marcus had somehow managed to sweet talk or charm his way out of the police station? Even if she fires him, which was within her jurisdiction to do, Nicole knew that she would not be able to avoid him.As if William could hear her thoughts, he stopped buttoning his shirt and gently grabbed her shoulders instead.“Look at me, baby,” he said softly. Nicole met his gaze with a sigh. “Good girl. Now repeat after me. I have nothing to worry about.”Nicole rolled her eyes at his instructi

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    Friendly reminder

Friendly reminder.Zara’s heart bubbled with hatred for Asher. She watched him walk away from the conference room, and as the sound of his footsteps faded into the distance, her heart grew colder and angrier. He should be in here with her, trying to come up with ways, strategies, anything to save the company. But he had walked away? He saw her in here and decided to walk the fuck away? The nerve of that man. The magnitude of what Asher had left her to do was almost overwhelming, and a small part of Zara wanted to just break down in tears and cry out all of the suffocating feeling in her chest. But she did not. Instead, she took a deep breath, steadied herself mentally and physically, before she started the meeting. “Ladies and gentlemen. I would like to start this meeting with an apology. My husband and I seemed to have lost control of our senses for a moment, and we made a terrible mistake. We allowed our per

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    A weak, spinless, coward.

Asher felt exactly the way he looked. Like a truck had run him over. He felt like shit, and the feeling only continued to grow as dawn broke through the sky. He had stayed in the office overnight, not daring to go home. Both William and Nicole had refused to pick his calls, or even respond to his texts. For the first time in his life, Asher was in true despair. He didn't know what to think. What to do. His heart rate had slowed down into a sluggish pace, and he just...Asher felt lost. He had never felt that way before, in all the years he has spent on earth. Zara didn't call him, and he didn't call her too. He knew he ought to call her. Asher knew that he should apologise at least. He was well aware of the fact that to repair the chasm that was now between them, he had to apologise first. But he had no will. He had not even the slightest energy left in his veins. So without thinking, he stumbled out of his office. It was fully daybreak by then, and all of his employees were at
