Nicole waited from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the bridal shop. Her stomach churned, but she chose to wait. Her fiancé, Asher Strong, had promised to meet her there that morning. She had just returned from a business summit and headed straight to the bridal shop.

She had called him several times and sent multiple text messages, but he wasn't responding, nor did he return any of her calls. Not sure what was going on, she decided to go to the company and meet him there.

She booked a taxi and headed to the office. Suddenly, a notification popped up on her phone. It was a post from her friend Lisa's I*******m account.

"It's a pleasure to have Dr. Morris as the new Vice President of Creative Mind."

Nicole frowned. She had gone away on a summit for the company, and Asher had already chosen someone else to become Vice President? A position he had promised her?

No. She needed to confront him as soon as possible.

Who was this Dr. Morris?

And how could Asher treat her like this? She was his fiancée and one of the founding members of Creative Mind.

She soon arrived at the company, paid the taxi driver, and dragged her suitcase along behind her. Taking the elevator to the executive floor, she walked toward Asher's office.

Then she stopped.

"...Isn't it going to hurt Nicole, knowing that you gave this position to your old crush?"

It was Khalid's voice. He had been friends with Asher for as long as Nicole could remember.

Nicole froze.

Old crush?

The new Vice President was Asher's crush?

She had been with him for five years, and he still had feelings for someone else?

"Zara is my crush," Asher said casually. "My childhood sweetheart. The one I never got the chance to confess to."

His voice was calm. Sincere.

"And Nicole?" Khalid asked. "Who is she to you?"

Nicole wanted to leave, but Khalid's question rooted her to the spot. She held her breath, terrified that even the sound of her breathing would reveal her presence.

"She's my duty," Asher replied blandly. "We're getting married out of duty and responsibility."

Nicole felt her entire body tremble.

Duty?

He was with her because of duty?

He had never loved her?

Tears instantly filled her eyes.

"If you don't love her, why go through with the marriage?" Khalid asked. "You'll ruin two lives. And what about your feelings for Zara?"

"Nicole would do anything to become Mrs. Strong. That's the reward I'll give her for supporting me these past five years. But my heart will always belong to Zara..."

Nicole heard every word.

Five years.

Five years of devotion.

Five years of sacrifices.

And to him, her reward was simply becoming Mrs. Strong?

As if that wasn't enough, Asher continued.

"...I've never truly been attracted to Nicole. And I'm afraid she'll never have my body either. Only Zara can have that. She has my heart and soul, and giving myself to her would be a privilege."

That was enough.

Nicole didn't need to hear another word.

Her body shook violently as pain ripped through her chest. It felt as though someone had plunged a dagger straight into her heart.

She had only ever loved Asher.

Yet apart from a kiss every few months—or sometimes once a year—there had never been any real intimacy between them.

Once, she had spent the night at his apartment and heard him murmur the name "Zara" in his sleep.

She hadn't thought much of it then.

As always, she had made excuses for him.

Turning around, she walked away, dragging her suitcase behind her.

She was his duty.

Well, she didn't want to be anymore.

He could be with the woman he truly loved.

Nicole had given up a scholarship for postgraduate studies to help Asher build the company he had always dreamed of creating. She had received the admission offer herself—and torn it apart.

She had worked herself to exhaustion to make the company successful.

She had taken out loans and put her own future on the line for the business.

And now that Creative Mind was finally thriving, Asher wanted to reward her with nothing more than his surname while giving his heart to another woman.

She exited the building and booked an Uber to a hotel.

Her mother suffered from hypertension and needed her blood pressure stabilized before undergoing surgery. Showing up at home in her current emotional state would only worry her.

The Uber arrived shortly afterward.

Nicole loaded her suitcase into the trunk and slid into the passenger seat.

Staring out the window, she sighed helplessly.

She should have known better.

There had never been an official engagement.

No proper proposal.

One evening, after she helped him secure a major contract with Aldi Fashion House, he had simply dropped her off and casually asked,

"What do you think about us walking down the aisle together?"

She had been overjoyed.

She had waited years to hear those words.

She hadn't cared that there was no ring.

No grand gesture.

No witnesses.

Then, before she left for the summit, he had told her,

"When you're back, let's visit a bridal shop."

She had been so happy.

Yet today, she had waited for hours in vain while he spent his time with the woman he truly loved.

Her phone suddenly rang.

It was the sales representative from the bridal shop.

Nicole answered.

"Hello, Miss Jason. I'll keep the wedding dress reserved for you. Just let me know when you and Mr. Strong would like to come back and take another look."

Nicole closed her eyes briefly and pressed her lips together.

"That won't be necessary anymore," she replied quietly.

She had chosen the perfect dress and waited for Asher as promised.

But he never showed up.

He had been busy.

Busy promoting his childhood crush to Vice President.

"Oh... I understand," the woman replied disappointedly.

Before she could say anything else, Nicole ended the call.

Glancing at her wristwatch, she saw that it was nearly the end of the workday.

She quickly texted her friend.

Let's talk when you're off work.

Soon afterward, she arrived at the hotel and checked in.

She couldn't go home to her mother while carrying so much pain.

She would spend the night there, calm herself, and return home the following morning.

An hour after checking in, her phone buzzed with a text notification.

Nicole picked it up.

The message was from Asher Strong...

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    A little trip down the memory lane

When he got into his car, he checked the address that was sent to him by his PA and began his journey. He had driven for approximately forty minutes before arriving at the address that was sent to him.He checked and confirmed the house number again before stepping out of his car to meet the woman. He got to the house number and rang the bell but no one answered. He rang the bell again and still got no response. He stepped back a bit and looked at the windows. The curtains were drawn and there did not seem to be a sign of life within the house. He checked his phone again to make sure that he was at the right address and even after confirming it, he seemed pretty confused. His PA would have let him know if no one was home.Looking around he saw someone pass and decided to call out to the person to make inquiries. “Uh… if you may spare me a minute of your time, I wanted to ask about the lady who lives here,” he said and pointed to the house behind him. “Who are you?” the man as

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    The Drove to Welling

Asher remained in his office a little after seven, pondering over how he would go meet this woman and how to actually get the woman to do what he wants. He did not know what he wanted to do yet, but he knew that having this woman on his side would be a great advantage. He just needed to get to her first since she was familiar with his enemy. The relationship with them was not explicitly defined by his PA but he knew that something was up somewhere. While he thought about this, his mind went back to what Luke had shown him the other day. Something was going wrong with his company and he needed to find out as soon as possible. A part of him wanted to believe what Luke had implied but he could not. Yes, Nicole was good at her job but that meant nothing. He had Zara by his side, a fully educated doctor and she was sure to do exceptionally better than Nicole. She was the perfect definition of beauty and brains. Apart from this, one thing that could not stop bothering him was the fact that

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    Zara's Jealousy

The luncheon was in Mayfair, held in a private room at one of those hotels that has been there so long it feels like part of the city's bones. It was a charity event for a women's fashion initiative and the room was full of exactly the kind of women that Zara respected. It was filled with accomplished and well-dressed women, just what she had been looking forward to. She entered the room with the aim of winning hearts and getting what she wanted. She stopped looking forward to it approximately fifteen minutes after she arrived. The first mention of Nicole's name came from a woman named Helene, who ran a buying office and who was describing the Paris partnership, which had gone viral, to the woman beside her with the enthusiasm of someone reporting genuinely exciting news. Zara heard the name and kept her expression pleasant and moved on when she couldn't bear to hear the other woman's praises. The second mention came at her own table, from a wo

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    Growing Pains

The email from Graham was unexpected and uncalled for.Nicole read it when she resumed at the office, surprised by its content. She thought about it for a while. No doubt that it was professional in its language and polite in its tone. But underneath both of those things, it was a direct challenge. It had been brewing for a long time now and she chose not to take note of it. Right now, Graham had tossed in the towel. He had gone to two members of the board with concerns about her restructuring strategy and the board members had responded by requesting a formal review. She called Priya in as she needed to get it over with. "Get me a meeting with the full board," she said. "This week if possible." Priya looked at her. "All five of them?" "All five,” she responded. She wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible. When things like this lingered for long, the outcome was not so favourable.Priya nodded and left her office.

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    Williams's Rules

William told her about the call the next morning. He came to her office just after nine, which was his usual time. He closed the door behind him and just stood at the entrance, which was not usual. She looked up from her desk, immediately noting that something was not right. "Asher had called me yesterday evening," he said. "I did not answer."Her body went rigid and she swallowed. “Please sit down, Mr. Grant,” she said, using the few seconds she had to brace herself. He sat across from her and Nicole looked at him. "What did he want?" "I do not know. He did not leave a message," he said as he held her gaze. "I wanted you to know before I decided anything. I have a hunch that he is calling about you. How do you want me to handle it?" "Don't return it," she said without hesitation. She had a feeling on why he was calling William but something in her bones made her feel that something was definitely not right, regardless. Still, she was going to s

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    Tremors

Wilson called really early in the morning and William was still in bed when the phone rang, which was quite unusual. He was normally up before six but the banquet had run later than he expected and the conversation in the car afterwards had kept his mind busy well past midnight, and when sleep finally came, it came hard and knocked him out.His phone rang again and he turned to find it. On seeing the caller ID, he wondered why his brother was calling him so early and answered. "It was not a leak," Wilson said, without greeting. "Asher did not get her address from anyone on the inside."William immediately sat up. "What do you mean?" "He figured it out himself. He has been digging into you for a few days now, your schedule, your staff, your usual movements and I do not know why. My guess is that he pieced it together from that." Wilson said.William was quiet for a moment. "Why is he digging into me?" "That I do not know yet. It could be Nicole or it could be her." Wilson's v

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    Her Compensation

He isn't going to waste his time going through it. She can't do without him and earlier than he expected, she sent a letter to apologise to him. She has nowhere else to go. He held her lifeline and her mother's hospital bills were going to be handled by him. She dares to frown at his decision

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    An offer

When Nicole arrived home, her mother was so excited to see her. The two women hugged each other and her mother said “I expected you to be back yesterday, I was going to call Asher if he heard from you when you arrived” her mother complained, taking her suitcase away from her. “I'm home now. I

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    A simpleton

“What was that for? What you saw was nothing. Zara needed my help and I offered to drive her to the company…” he blurted, his cold gaze on her as if she's committed an offence. “I don't know what you're talking about and I didn't see anything either” Nicole snapped back at him. She tried to

  • Mr Strong, I Refuse To Be Your Duty    At the hotel

Nicole smirked when she read Asher's text."Sorry I couldn't make it to the bridal shop. I've been busy with meetings. Take two weeks off work, look after your mom, and make the wedding plans."If she hadn't left the company when she did, she might still have been waiting for him for hours while he
