Chapter 28

Step Out!

Lyla Atelo.

Whatever was being said went in from one ear and went out through the other. I wasn't listening. I couldn't concentrate in the meeting, but I saw the principal's mouth moving.

What Elijah told me still weighed heavy on me. I aimlessly scrolled through my phone to find the numbers that he had always used to text me. It struck me that I never bothered to ask him how he got my number, but that would still be a stupid question if I asked him.

"Mrs. Lyla, what do you think?" I was brought out of my reverie when I heard my name being called.

My eyes snapped to the podium where Principal Michelle stood in her well-pressed suit and skirt, looking young and sharp.

I was a bit flustered at being called because all eyes were on me.

"What do you think about our deliberations and conclusion?" Mrs. Michelle repeated her sentence.

The words stuck in my throat because I didn't know what to say. I hadn't been listening to the conversation at all.

"Uh..." I cleared my throat and continued. "I think the conclusion is a wonderful idea, ma'am." I looked around to find any clue concerning the topic of the meeting until my eyes settled on the projected screen behind Mrs. Lyla.

The topic was about a camping trip with final year students. Sage's classmates... The way his name flashed at me again almost made me stumble. I had to focus on this meeting.

"Which part of the contribution is a wonderful idea?" She asks. It was like she knew I wasn't listening to the conversation.

"Every part of it?" I grimaced since my answer came out more like a question.

Then, there was a sudden gasp from the podium. "Oh, Lyla! I'm really sorry." Mrs. Michelle began in a way that startled me. "How is your health? I heard you fell into the pool yesterday. You shouldn't even be in school today, you should be at home resting!"

She looked so emotional as she stood on the podium.

"It's okay, ma'am. I'm fine." I told her.

She shook her head vigorously. "No, it's not fine! I should have known better. Just now, you escaped being punished because I saw you were distracted. I'll have to let this go."

I heard gasps from all corners of the room, but I didn't understand why that was so.

"You know I don't condone tardiness within my staff. It doesn't matter if you are favoured by our golden student, I still run this school. Okay?"

My mouth hung open in shock. Favoured by their Golden student? Did she mean Sage? I almost scoffed in disbelief but I kept my cool.

"I'm sorry, ma'am." I said.

She nodded and gestured for me to sit down, and this time, I made sure to pay attention to what she was saying. The way she spoke with so much authority spiked fear in my heart.

"As I was saying..." She continued, "Lyla, take note please. We haven't come to a conclusion of this discussion. We are just starting."

I forced a smile on my face and nodded.

"Erm." She cleared her throat. "This camping experience is for our students to develop social and personal skills in the terms of teamwork and communication, independence and resilience, leadership and building relationships with each other. After this year, they would most likely be spread across the world away from each other, and I want to use this opportunity to have them build an interpersonal relationship because of the nearest future when they step into their lines of work."

Teachers nodded in agreement. Some were taking down notes while some were raising their hands to give suggestions. But Mrs. Michelle didn't seem to care about those hands at all. She faced me squarely, licking her bottom lips.

"Lyla..." She called me. "What do you think?"

I stood up immediately before she had a chance to try to ridicule me.

"Well, I think it's a beautiful idea. The main thing we have to look at are the type of games or activities that will make this camping trip a successful and a beautiful experience for the students. You know, something that will help them also broaden their perspectives on life. Something that will..." I didn't know the right words to use, so I just paused there.

"Is that all?" Mrs. Michelle cocked her head to the side, a ghost of a smile forming on her face.

This look reminded me so much of Sara, my assailant. Were they joining forces together to try to get rid of me? I couldn't understand what was going on, but I tried my best to have my passive reaction on my face.

"Yes, ma'am." I nodded. "I'm just a little lightheaded and I can't seem to remember the right words to conclude. It could be that I still haven't recovered from the accident." I told her.

She searched my face for a while before a scowl covered her face. "Why would you come in to teach our students when you're in such a state? Don't you know how much we value the quality of learning gotten by our students? Do you know that you have to be in your best health to teach them, else you will make mistakes and teach them the wrong things! Do you know what wrong things do? They affect the future of our students, and we are trying our best to avoid that!" Her voice was loud, but she wasn't yelling.

The embarrassment was so much to handle. Maybe I should have just listened to Michael and called in sick, but that didn't still guarantee anything.

"I'm sorry, ma'am." I could only bow in apology.

"Keep your apologies to yourself, Mrs. Atelo." She spat out. "Step out of this meeting immediately."

She said immediately.

"Huh?" I was surprised. Was she kicking me out?

"Didn't you hear me? Wait for me in my office. We have to talk before I relieve you to go home and rest."

Chapter 50The Twist.Lyla Atelo.“I'm not…”“…wealthy enough to purchase this? Of course I know that. Sage gifted this to you, right?” Her eyes were beaming in joy. She didn't look disgusted at all about anything.“What other things did he get for you?” She peered into the box that sat in front of us, trying to rummage through it.“You know I can't accept this, right?” Right now, I needed her support for me to turn down these gifts. It was too much. I couldn't handle something this big.“Why not?” Ivy paused and lifted her head to stare at me with a frown.“It's not right, and you know that.” I tried to stress out, but Ivy didn't seem to be following. “He is… you know, he's my student. I'm his teacher. This kind of thing isn't supposed to be going on between us.”Ivy's eyebrows rose further up and she rolled her eyes. “Take it as a simple gift from a student.”“Simple? You call this simple?” I pointed to the document that still lay on the table. “It's a freaking Jewellery store. Not

Chapter 49A Brand New Owner.Lyla Atelo.Sage wasn't in school for the rest of the week, and today was Friday. I had texted him over and over again, but he never responded. I was tempted to go over to his house, but I didn't want a repeat of the last time.I was currently sitting in my office when the door was forcefully pushed open, and my least favourite person walked into the office.“Hello, Sara.” I folded my hands on my table and sat up to face her squarely. She gave me a once-over before taking in my office as if she had never been here before.“Will Sage be coming for Camp?” She asked outrightly.“Excuse me?”“You heard me right. Or are you dumb?”I choose to ignore her choice of words. “I heard you loud and clear, but what I don't understand is why you're asking me.”“Aren't you the one he's fucking?” She said calmly, not at all fazed by the vulgarity of what she was saying.“If you were remanded in court and asked to prove those allegations, would you be able to?”“Don't you

Chapter 48Naughty Little Slut.Lyla Atelo.I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed and optimistic for some unknown reason. I turned to my side, watching Michael sleep peacefully beside me. I rolled my eyes and began to prepare for school.“You're quite late today. That's so unlike you.” Dominic, one of my male colleagues, pointed out as we walked side by side down the corridor.I shrugged. “I slept late, and I woke up late.”His mouth curved into a small smile, “Your husband kept you up all night, aye?” He teased slightly, and it took all of me not wince at his words.I forced a smile on my face with a little ‘heh heh’ to avoid the question. “So, are you prepared for the camping experience?”He understood my discomfort and immediately changed the subject. “I wasn't picked. There are only two male teachers coming while the rest are females. Aren't you aware of this?” He squinted as if trying to remember something. “Seeing that you're the coordinator of the camp?”“Coordinator?” I

  • Mrs. Lyla And Her Obsession    Coming To Camp?

Chapter 47Coming To Camp?Lyla Atelo.I came home with a stupid smile on my face. Sage had made my entire evening and I was just smiling like a fool.“You're back," my husband appeared from the corner of the doorway leading to the kitchen. He wore an apron which suggested that he was cooking.I frowned slightly at the sight of that, while waiting for him to complain that I had come home late.“I'm back, yes.” I smiled a little at him.“And in high spirits as well.” He noted that part, “I hope you had a great day at work.”“I did. How about you?” I shrugged off my shoulder bag which was beginning to get heavy and set it on the table, taking in a deep breath of what he was cooking.“I made dinner. Would you like some?” He noted the actions of my nose before asking, but I shook my head immediately.I knew my husband by now. I could guess what he wanted from me, but I waited for him to say it. Michael never did any nice things for me unless he wanted something in return, and this wasn't

  • Mrs. Lyla And Her Obsession    Take Me Home

Chapter 46Take Me Home.Lyla Atelo.Sage did not say anything until the car came to a stop in a luxurious shopping mall where he went back to driving mode, parking the car at the exclusive parking lot. He stepped out to open the car for me, taking my arm in his."What are you doing? Where are we going? Why are we here?" I asked him even if I could guess what exactly it was that we were doing here."Shopping." He shrugged. "I saw on the internet that you should take a woman shopping when she is angry. It— ""But I'm not angry. Why would I be?"He gave me a quick look before shutting the car. "Yeah, right, you aren't. But I'm here to apologise anyway."Amidst my protests, Sage had his arms hooked around mine until we reached one of the most expensive jewellery stores in the city."Pick anything you'd like. Diamonds. Gold. Silver. Precious stones. Anything." He said as he signalled one of the sales assistants to come over. The girl gave me a once-over, and she did not hide her displeasu

  • Mrs. Lyla And Her Obsession    In The Car

Chapter 45In The Car.Lyla Atelo."Get In the car, Lyla." Sage's voice came in a little stronger this time as he looked over my shoulders. "Unless you want your colleagues to keep speculating that something is going on between us."Our eyes met when he said that, and I paused to think. Did he also have in mind the same question I had? I wanted to ask if there was actually something going on between us, but I didn't dare voice my question out. I didn't want to sound desperate, but still... something that Michelle said earlier egged me at the back of my mind."What do you think about Ivy?" I averted my gaze from his face and looked down to the tarred road. I looked everywhere else but at him. "Is it true you're into older women, and I'm just one of your conquest?"I suddenly felt the cold night wind hit my skin, and I looked up in alarm to see Sage backing away from him. He stared at me with an emotion I couldn't decipher before spinning his car key between his thumb and index finger.
