Chapter 29

He Fancies You.

Lyla Atelo.

Mrs. Michelle's office was cold when I entered. The AC was at the highest, and I shivered, hugging myself to try and gather some warmth for my body. My eyes darted around the office, admiring her aesthetics and a series of awards that decorated the office wall.

It was long before the door opened, and the principal stepped into the office with her usual plastic smile.

"Lyla... There you are..." She began sweetly. "For a moment there, I thought you would have left because of my earlier tone."

I forced a smile at her and stood up for her to sit. "It's no problem, ma'am. You were right all along."

I expected her to make her way to her chair, but she stopped in front of me.

"Don't be silly, Lyla. You can call me Michelle." Her tone was low, and her fingers reached towards my dress, "You look really beautiful today, Lyla. Where did you buy the dress? I love it!"

I bit my lower lips, uncomfortable by her proximity to me. I swallowed before answering.

"Oh, I didn't buy it myself. My best friend bought it for me when she travelled abroad." I told her truthfully. Kendra had gotten me this gown, as well as others, as a gift for me when she travelled.

"Your friend sure has good eyes." Michelle commented.

"Thank you, maa... Uh... Michelle." Her name stuck in my throat, but I was thankful that it came out.

"And... you really do have a smooth and pretty skin," She began touching my face until she reached my bare shoulders. Her hands felt like scales trying to chaff my skin.

When I couldn't hide my disgust anymore, I stepped backwards, away from her. "Thank you, Michelle."

I was sure that the look on my face told her I wasn't interested. She smiled tersely and made her way to her table.

"You can take a seat, Lyla." She sat down first while gesturing to the chair opposite her. I was glad that her table separated us because I wouldn't trust myself not to hit her if she touched me again. "Do you know why I called you?" She clasped her hands together on the table.

I shook my head in response.

"At least you've heard about the camp the school is planning for final year students, yeah? And how badly we need donations to make it work... Donations from students and their families, I mean."

I nodded, not liking where she was headed. "Yes ma— Michelle. I think it's a great idea."

She looked at me for a long while, the atmosphere tense. I waited. Anticipated her next words.

"Every teacher is to attach themselves to a student whose family can donate to our cause... Are you following?"

I knew where she was heading, but I still hoped it wasn't what I was thinking. I had to calm down to hear what she had to say.

"And to do this... you have to relate with the student in a way that wouldn't arouse suspicion that you're trying to manipulate them to manipulate their parents to donate." She was talking animatedly with her hands. "You have to be smart about it, or you risk losing your job. It's kind of like gold digging, but it's for a good cause."

"Why can't we just reach out to the students' parents for them to donate?" I asked.

She gave me a cold look before her features softened very fast. "You're new here, so I understand your question. But, yes, we already have done that. The money isn't... you might say, enough. We need more." Her plastic smile was back.

"Okay." I gave her one of mine. "So, I guess I have been matched to one of your students, right?"

"As a matter of fact you have." She seemed. "And he's no other person but your favourite student, Sage Dominic!"

I knew it. Why did it feel like she was trying to set me up? She was trying to make him fire me from this school. She knew it wouldn't be hard for Sage to see through my lies and manipulation. My image would be entirely muddied in front of him.

"And listen..." She continued, her voice even lower than before. "If something happens, the school will claim no responsibility in it. We would deny sending any of you to the students to task their parents. We just have to do this for the students, I hope you understand, Lyla."

The more she spoke, the more it dawned on me that she was using these students to milk them of their parent's monies. She was enriching herself from their wealth. I hid my disappointment.

I could simply decline, but it seemed like that wasn't an option.

"Lyla... Listen to me..." She stood up and rounded the table to stand in front of me. "Sage is our biggest fish in this school, and if you're successful, I guarantee you that you will have an office as enormous as mine. You will hold your cards in this school, and no one can touch you, not even Sage. You will be under my protection and under this school's protection. You would answer only to me, and I will keep your secrets for you." She looked at me with a knowing expression on her face.

At first, I was about to thoroughly decline her offer when she mentioned the last part, making me pause.

"Secrets? What secrets are you talking about?" I raised a brow in confusion, my heart beating fast.

"Oh sweetheart... We both know that Sage fancies you, and there must be something you give to him that makes him fancy you this much." She smiled. "What I'm asking you to do is to secure your future here on a long term basis. What if he gets tired of you and decides he no longer needs your services in this school? You wouldn't be immune to that."

"I don't give him anything. He doesn't fancy me!" I tried to argue, but she just smiled.

"We are done here. You can go home now."

She didn't look disgusted at all about anything.“What other things did he get for you?” She peered into the box that sat in front of us, trying to rummage through it.“You know I can't accept this, right?” Right now, I needed her support for me to turn down these gifts. It was too much. I couldn't handle something this big.“Why not?” Ivy paused and lifted her head to stare at me with a frown.“It's not right, and you know that.” I tried to stress out, but Ivy didn't seem to be following. “He is… you know, he's my student. I'm his teacher. This kind of thing isn't supposed to be going on between us.”Ivy's eyebrows rose further up and she rolled her eyes. “Take it as a simple gift from a student.”“Simple? You call this simple?” I pointed to the document that still lay on the table. “It's a freaking Jewellery store. Not

Chapter 49A Brand New Owner.Lyla Atelo.Sage wasn't in school for the rest of the week, and today was Friday. I had texted him over and over again, but he never responded. I was tempted to go over to his house, but I didn't want a repeat of the last time.I was currently sitting in my office when the door was forcefully pushed open, and my least favourite person walked into the office.“Hello, Sara.” I folded my hands on my table and sat up to face her squarely. She gave me a once-over before taking in my office as if she had never been here before.“Will Sage be coming for Camp?” She asked outrightly.“Excuse me?”“You heard me right. Or are you dumb?”I choose to ignore her choice of words. “I heard you loud and clear, but what I don't understand is why you're asking me.”“Aren't you the one he's fucking?” She said calmly, not at all fazed by the vulgarity of what she was saying.“If you were remanded in court and asked to prove those allegations, would you be able to?”“Don't you

Chapter 48Naughty Little Slut.Lyla Atelo.I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed and optimistic for some unknown reason. I turned to my side, watching Michael sleep peacefully beside me. I rolled my eyes and began to prepare for school.“You're quite late today. That's so unlike you.” Dominic, one of my male colleagues, pointed out as we walked side by side down the corridor.I shrugged. “I slept late, and I woke up late.”His mouth curved into a small smile, “Your husband kept you up all night, aye?” He teased slightly, and it took all of me not wince at his words.I forced a smile on my face with a little ‘heh heh’ to avoid the question. “So, are you prepared for the camping experience?”He understood my discomfort and immediately changed the subject. “I wasn't picked. There are only two male teachers coming while the rest are females. Aren't you aware of this?” He squinted as if trying to remember something. “Seeing that you're the coordinator of the camp?”“Coordinator?” I

Chapter 47Coming To Camp?Lyla Atelo.I came home with a stupid smile on my face. Sage had made my entire evening and I was just smiling like a fool.“You're back," my husband appeared from the corner of the doorway leading to the kitchen. He wore an apron which suggested that he was cooking.I frowned slightly at the sight of that, while waiting for him to complain that I had come home late.“I'm back, yes.” I smiled a little at him.“And in high spirits as well.” He noted that part, “I hope you had a great day at work.”“I did. How about you?” I shrugged off my shoulder bag which was beginning to get heavy and set it on the table, taking in a deep breath of what he was cooking.“I made dinner. Would you like some?” He noted the actions of my nose before asking, but I shook my head immediately.I knew my husband by now. I could guess what he wanted from me, but I waited for him to say it. Michael never did any nice things for me unless he wanted something in return, and this wasn't

Chapter 46Take Me Home.Lyla Atelo.Sage did not say anything until the car came to a stop in a luxurious shopping mall where he went back to driving mode, parking the car at the exclusive parking lot. He stepped out to open the car for me, taking my arm in his."What are you doing? Where are we going? Why are we here?" I asked him even if I could guess what exactly it was that we were doing here."Shopping." He shrugged. "I saw on the internet that you should take a woman shopping when she is angry. But I'm here to apologise anyway."Amidst my protests, Sage had his arms hooked around mine until we reached one of the most expensive jewellery stores in the city."Pick anything you'd like. Diamonds. Gold. Silver. Precious stones. Anything." He said as he signalled one of the sales assistants to come over. The girl gave me a once-over, and she did not hide her displeasu

Chapter 45In The Car.Lyla Atelo."Get In the car, Lyla." Sage's voice came in a little stronger this time as he looked over my shoulders. "Unless you want your colleagues to keep speculating that something is going on between us."Our eyes met when he said that, and I paused to think. Did he also have in mind the same question I had? I wanted to ask if there was actually something going on between us, but I didn't dare voice my question out. I didn't want to sound desperate, but still... something that Michelle said earlier egged me at the back of my mind."What do you think about Ivy?" I averted my gaze from his face and looked down to the tarred road. I looked everywhere else but at him. "Is it true you're into older women, and I'm just one of your conquest?"I suddenly felt the cold night wind hit my skin, and I looked up in alarm to see Sage backing away from him. He stared at me with an emotion I couldn't decipher before spinning his car key between his thumb and index finger.
