Betsy’s pov

My wolf hummed beneath my skin, alert, tasting the tension. I ran to my training space, needing to burn something, anything, and to prove something.

I started with basic forms, focusing on my stance, my breath, the hum of my energy. The wolf pressed harder and I pushed back. My hands glowed faintly as I practiced strikes. The air pulsed around me, responding to my movements. And then, suddenly, my wolf surged, erupting from within.

A roar tore from my chest. My muscles elongated, senses sharpened. I swiveled, spinning, and instinct took over.

The energy coiled around me, lifting objects gently, not violently, but with undeniable force. Warnings echoed in my mind. Dangerous. Starblood. Weak, tethered.

I stopped, breathing hard. Fully wolfed out. My heart raced, but something inside me clicked, I could do this.

I could control some of it.

I froze mid-step, realizing… I had done it alone. My wolf side and Starblood power, working together.

I laughed softly, amazed. “I… did i

Betsy’s povMy first instinct had been to tear the room apart, to scream, to unleash the Starblood against the unyielding stone walls. He thinks I'm his prisoner. He thinks he can manipulate my fear into obedience.A cold, steely resolve began to replace the panic. Drake had called me a Beta. He called me his Starblood, and if there was one thing I inherited from that cursed bloodline, it was resilience. If Matteo wanted a partner, he would get one. But it would be a partner of my own making, playing my own game.I ran a hand over my still-aching chest, the bond to Drake a muted, almost imperceptible thrum now, thanks to the distance and the forced separation. It was a faint thread, not a lifeline. I needed to act like it was severed entirely.Hours crawled by. My body slowly recuperated, but my mind was in overdrive, dissecting every word Matteo had spoken. Starblood hunting groups. Ritualistic ends. Supreme asset. Darmoon’s highest-value prisoner. The implications were terrifying, p

  • My Alpha, My Mate, My Ruin.   Chapter 46

Betsy’s povSeveral hours later, the pain had become a dull, secondary throb, overshadowed completely by the arctic cold of shock. Darmoon Pack. The rival Pack. The Pack that had enmity with Lanemoon for decades. And the man who was stepping into the room wasn't just my true mate, he was the heir to the entire territory.Matteo Durian. The name resonated with a new, dangerous weight. You didn't have a pack.""Every wolf has a pack, Betsy," Matteo countered, his voice steady, radiating an unnatural calm. He didn't raise his voice, yet the sound dominated the small, cold room. "Some of us are simply preparing for the moment of succession. My father, the Alpha, has been indisposed. That required extreme caution. I couldn't risk revealing my ties."He crossed the short space between us, and I instinctively retreated until my back hit the rough stone wall. The small room, which I now knew was beneath the rival Pack's lodge, suddenly felt like a cage fashioned from my own worst fears."And

Betsy’s povThe ground was cold beneath my cheek. Damp. Smelled like pine and blood, my blood. My limbs refused to move, still burned from the fight. I forced my eyes open to the blur of moonlight filtering through tall trees.Voices echoed somewhere nearby.“Heal her first. She’s losing too much blood.”Footsteps approached. A hand, warm, steady, rested against my arm.I tried to speak, but a groan escaped instead.A familiar voice quietly said, “You’re safe now… Betsy.”That voice. My breath caught.“…Matteo?” I whispered. But darkness dragged me under before I could see his face. When I woke again, everything smelled wrong. Not wrong like danger, wrong like unfamiliar territory. Strange walls. Strange sounds. A steady beeping like a hospital monitor. Soft murmurs outside the door.I bolted upright, wincing at a stab of pain through my ribs. My muscles screamed in protest, every fiber exhausted from the uncontrolled power surge. My Starblood dampener, the small ward I'd created, was

Betsy’s povThe morning after the date was supposed to be a success. I woke with the lingering sweetness of the kiss still on my lips and the solid conviction that I had successfully anchored Betsy to me, silencing the dangerous doubts she carried. But then everything felt wrong. The bond was there, a thin, raw wire stretching tautly between us but it was fractured. The usual warm thrumming, the steady comfort of her presence, was gone. It felt like a deep, internal wound.I bolted upright, throwing the covers aside.I threw on my trousers and stalked out of the room, my Alpha sensors screaming danger, but the nature of the danger was purely emotional.I found Nick in the kitchen, staring into a half-drunk mug of coffee.“Where’s Betsy?”He looked up at him, brows furrowed. “I thought you two were together.”“No. I… the bond feels weird.”“Did you check her room?”I wheeled around and sprinted to her room. Her room was neat. Too neat. The emerald dress lay on the ground, the color sta

  • My Alpha, My Mate, My Ruin.   Chapter 43

Betsy’s povThe cold air hit me with brutal clarity the moment I dropped from the window and landed silently in the mulch below. The scent of pine and damp earth filled my lungs, momentarily overriding the sharp, lingering agony of the severed connection. I placed the small, pulsing control ward into the deepest pocket of my jacket. He’s still asleep. He hasn't found the letter yet. That thought was the only mercy I allowed myself.I ran. Not in my wolf form, that would leave too clear a scent and consume too much energy for a journey of unknown length. I ran on two legs, relying on the endurance of my Starblood powers, using the cover of the dense Lanemoon forest.Every few hundred yards, the psychic pain would spike, a phantom ache in my chest that made me gasp. It was the bond protesting, stretching thin, fighting the separation. Each spike was a reminder of Drake, a taste of his anger, his confusion, his deep-seated instinct to pull me back. I knew that soon, that passive pain wo

  • My Alpha, My Mate, My Ruin.   Chapter 42

Betsy’s povThe kiss, possessive, desperate, and achingly real still burned on my lips. Every word Drake had spoken, every confident promise to fight the darkness for me, had only driven the dagger of my guilt deeper.I leaned back against the cool wood of my bedroom door, my fingers tracing the outline of my mouth, tasting his familiar, comforting presence one last time.He loves me. He trusts me. And I’m about to prove that his trust was misplaced.I pushed off the door and crossed the room, the heavy emerald dress, a symbol of the 'normal' life he wanted for us, now feeling like a shroud. I pulled the zipper down with a rough, shaky tug, letting the fabric pool around my feet. I didn't even bother hanging it up; it belonged to the Beta I was, not the refugee I was about to become.I changed into my simplest clothes, worn jean pants, a soft pack t-shirt and my sturdiest boots. But the familiarity didn't bring comfort, it only emphasized the finality of my actions. I sank onto the e
