~∆~ Mariah's POV ~∆~
I wake up to the smell of bacon and the sound of Ethan humming off-key in my kitchen. For a split second, I forget about last night's hallway encounter and just feel grateful that my boyfriend is the type of guy who makes breakfast without being asked. Then I remember green eyes and a rough voice saying "sweet dreams," and the guilt comes flooding back. "Morning, beautiful," Ethan calls when he hears me padding toward the kitchen. "I made your favorite." He's standing at my stove in nothing but his boxer briefs, and objectively, I know he looks good. Ethan works out religiously, has to, to keep up with his werewolf metabolism, and it shows. Lean muscle, perfect abs, the kind of ass that would make most women weep with gratitude. So why do I find myself comparing him to broad shoulders and a black t-shirt stretched across a chest that looked like it could stop a fast-moving train? "You didn't have to do that," I say, accepting the plate he hands me. Eggs Benedict with fresh hollandaise, perfectly crispy bacon, and sliced strawberries arranged in a little heart shape. Because, of course, they are. "I wanted to." He drops a kiss on my forehead, and I catch his scent, cherries and a mix of sandalwood. "Besides, you seemed stressed last night. Thought you could use some pampering." Stressed. Right. If only he knew why. "Work stuff," I lie, taking a bite of eggs that taste like sawdust in my mouth. "The Morrison account is being difficult." "The hockey player?" Ethan's eyebrows rise. "I thought that was going well." "It is. Was. He wants to rebrand his whole image, and his management team keeps changing their minds about direction." I'm improvising now, but it sounds believable. "Athletes can be... demanding." "Tell me about it." Ethan rolls his eyes. "Remember that defensive lineman I represented last year? Wanted to sue a reporter for calling him 'surprisingly articulate' because he thought it was racist. Which it probably was, but good luck proving that in court." Right. Ethan's job. I should ask about it, show interest, and be a supportive girlfriend. Instead, I find myself wondering what Rain Cross does for a living. Professional hockey, obviously, but for which team? And why did his name sound so familiar? "Earth to Ria." Ethan waves a hand in front of my face, grinning. "You're somewhere else this morning." "Sorry." I force a smile. "Just tired. You know how I get when I don't sleep enough." "Which is why I'm taking care of you." He sits across from me with his own plate, loaded with about three times as much food as mine. Werewolf metabolism is no joke. "Eat up, and then you can go back to bed for a while. I don't have to be in the office until noon." The implication is clear. He wants to take me back to bed, and not for sleeping. The thought makes my stomach clench with an emotion I don't want to examine too closely. "Actually, I should get some work done," I say quickly. "The Morrison thing really is behind schedule." Disappointment flashed across his face, but he nodded. "Of course. Work first. Maybe tonight we can..." A loud crash from next door cuts him off, followed by what sounds like an entire furniture store being rearranged. Ethan's head snaps toward the sound, his nostrils flaring slightly. Oh, shit. "New neighbor," I say casually, praying my voice doesn't shake. "Moved in last night. Seems like he's still unpacking." Ethan's eyes narrow, and I can practically see his wolf pushing closer to the surface. "Male?" "I assume. I haven't actually met him." The lie slides off my tongue so easily that it scares me. When did I become someone who lies without even thinking about it? Another crash, followed by more creative cursing. This time I recognize Rain's voice, and my traitorous body responds with a flutter of awareness I absolutely do not want to feel. "Sounds like he's having trouble," Ethan says, standing up. "Maybe I should offer to help." "No!" The word comes out harsher than I intended, and Ethan's eyebrows shoot up. "I mean, he might not appreciate strangers barging in. Some people are private about their space." "Since when are you concerned about bothering strangers? You're the one who brought cookies to Mrs. Chen when she moved in." Damn it. He's right. Normally I would be the first person to offer help to a new neighbor. The fact that I'm actively trying to prevent Ethan from meeting Rain is going to seem suspicious. "You're right," I say, forcing enthusiasm into my voice. "We should introduce ourselves. Be good neighbors." But even as I say it, panic is sinking its nails into my chest. If Ethan meets Rain, he'll smell him on me from last night. Werewolves can detect scents hours after contact, and Ethan is particularly sensitive to other males around me. He says it's because I'm his mate. I've always assumed it was just normal boyfriend jealousy. Now I'm wondering if there's a difference. "Great," Ethan says, already heading toward the door. "Let me just put on some clothes." While he's getting dressed, I frantically try to think of a way out of this. I could fake a sudden illness. I have an urgent work call. Set the apartment on fire. Okay, maybe not that last one. That was too elaborate. But before I can come up with a reasonable excuse, Ethan is back, dressed in jeans and a fitted t-shirt that shows off his gym-sculpted physique. He looks good. Really good. So why do I feel like I'm about to walk into a minefield? "Ready?" he asks, offering me his arm. No. Absolutely not. This is the worst idea in the history of bad ideas. "Ready," I lie. " You don't look ready though, are you okay?" He comes towards and then touch my forehead. " I am fine. I just feel a little sick." Another lie. " Come then, let's go. I will take care of later."~∆~ Mariah's POV ~∆~I stand at the edge of the portal in Rain's family's old territory, staring at the swirling blue light that's become so familiar to me over the past six months. This is my fourth visit to Farifilia, and each time I hope things will be different. But they never are."You ready?" Rain asks, taking my hand. He doesn't have to come with me, but he always does. That's just who he is."Yeah. Let's get this over with."We step through together, and the familiar cold rushes over my skin as we cross between worlds. When we step out on the other side, Farifilia looks exactly the same as it always does. Beautiful, cruel mystics and perfect.A guard meets us immediately. They always do."Princess Mariah," he says with a bow that makes me uncomfortable. "Prince Albert is in the healing chamber.""Is there any chance?" I ask, even though I know the answer."No, Princess. Both souls remain in stasis."My heart sinks, but I force myself to keep walking. Rain squeezes my hand.T
~∆~ Rain's POV ~∆~Moonbeam's mother, who seems to be the leader of the seven nobles, smiles devilishly as if she has been waiting for this opportunity all her life.I realized from her expression that Mariah made the worst decision. "Then I will fulfill your wishes half-breed. I will make the punishment swift and fitting," she says. "Each crime will receive its proper consequence."She waves her hand, and suddenly I can't move. It's like invisible chains are holding me in place. I try to shift, try to call on my wolf, but nothing happens. We're all stuck in one place."Elena Rivera," the woman says, looking at Mariah's mom. "Your crime was corrupting royal blood and creating an abomination. Your punishment is death.""No!" Mariah screams, but the sound barely comes out through whatever spell is holding us.A beam of red light shoots from the noble's hand straight at Elena's chest. She doesn't even have time to scream. The light hits her, and she just... crumbles. "MOM!" Mariah's v
~∆~ Mariah's POV ~∆~Military trucks crash through what's left of Kane's house. The front wall disappears in a bunch of concrete chunks. Soldiers run in with guns, and helicopters circle overhead with bright lights that hurt my eyes."Great," Kane says, looking at his destroyed living room. "Give up now or we'll shoot everyone!" a man yells through a speaker.Sophia starts crying again. "That's my dad."The nobles turn to look at the humans. Their faces turned really scary, they looked at them like ants they would like to crush without mercy."Humans," the woman hissed turning her gaze on them. "They dare interrupt our trial with their pathetic weapons? Do they think those flimsy toys can hurt us?"She lifts her hand. I can feel her power building that will kill everyone for miles away, not just the soldiers, but regular people sleeping in their beds who don't know any of this is happening. These people are truly despicable!"No!" I stepped forward as she threw her red beam lights, w
~∆~ Mariah's POV ~∆~The walls suddenly explode. Everyone fell to the ground expecting another attack. When we stood up and looked around, we found the explosion wasn't from bombs or bullets.Instead, in its place were seven tall figures. They step through the broken pieces like they're walking through air. Their skin glows between white and blue, and their eyes look like winter storms. Kane's coffee table gets thrown across the room. His favorite TV crashes to the floor. Poor guy spent years getting this place just right, and now it's getting wrecked by these dense fools who think they own everything."My gaming setup!" Jackson yells as his PlayStation gets crushed under falling debris. How the hell did he carry a gaming station through the portal?"I just bought the new FIFA!" He cries out again."Really?" Luna asked sarcastically, looking at him as if she were imagining ways to smash his head against a wall. "We're about to die and you're worried about soccer games?""It's footb
~∆~ Rain's POV ~∆~Before anyone can respond to our declaration of war, Moonbeam suddenly stiffens beside James, her eyes going white, and she begins shaking. James held her tightly, his fear exposed for all to see. " It's okay, I am here," he began whispering to her, gently rocking, but that didn't stop her from shaking more violently."They're coming," she whispers, her voice filled with dread."Who's coming?" Kane demands, looking outside to see."The Johnson family," Moonbeam says, her features pale with fear. "And they're not alone."Sophia looks confused. "My family? What do you mean they're coming? How would they even know we're here?"That's when Moonbeam drops the bombshell that makes everything click into place."Sophia," she says gently, "your family, they're the ones who've been funding Ethan and are responsible for the video leakage of Rain and Luna. They're part of a human organization that's been hunting our kind and portal passage for decades."The color drains from
~∆~ Mariah's POV ~∆~The silence that follows my mother's outburst about my father being the murdered prince feels like the entire world holding its breath in my head.I can feel everyone's eyes on me, waiting for my reaction, but honestly? I'm still trying to process the fact that my sweet, Catholic mother just sent Rain's mother flying across the room with a single kick. She has surprised me twice today, and I still don't know what to make of the surprises she has been giving me. Ugh... Would it have been so bad to be just human oh God?"Mom," I say slowly, my voice sounding strange in my own ears, "what exactly haven't you told me?"She turns to look at me, and for the first time in my life, I see her not as my protective, worried mother, but as someone with a lot of pain and vulnerability. The woman who used to fret over whether I was eating enough vegetables and getting enough sleep apparently has been hiding the fact that my father was supernatural royalty and she knows he was
