Asher’s POV

“Mrs. Bennett,” I said. “What a surprise.”

I said it with my hand on the small of Noa’s back, because the moment her mother called out across the parking lot, I had felt Noa’s whole spine turn to stone under her coat.

Liora Bennett came down the lodge steps with her arms still out. She went straight past me as though I were a coat rack and wrapped her arms around her daughter. It was a big hug. A loud hug. The kind meant to be seen from the porch.

Asher’s POV“Mrs. Bennett,” I said. “What a surprise.”I said it with my hand on the small of Noa’s back, because the moment her mother called out across the parking lot, I had felt Noa’s whole spine turn to stone under her coat.Liora Bennett came down the lodge steps with her arms still out. She went straight past me as though I were a coat rack and wrapped her arms around her daughter. It was a big hug. A loud hug. The kind meant to be seen from the porch.Noa stood inside it with her arms at her sides.“Look at you,” said Liora, pulling back and holding Noa by both shoulders. Her eyes went over Noa’s face, her coat, her hair. They stopped on the silver streaks. A cold look moved in them, and then the bright smile came back. “My goodness. What have they been doing to you?”“Working,” said Noa.“Well, you look exhausted. We’ll fix that.” Liora turned the smile on me. “Alpha Stone. We meet at last. Councilor Vane was so kind to invite us. Eli and Talia are inside. Eli has a cold. Tal

Noa’s POV“You’ve been staring at that box for sixty miles,” Asher said. “It’s not going to turn into gold.”“It might. I’m a magical baker.”“You’re a magical baker with a silver necklace in her lap.”“Thank you, Alpha. I’d forgotten.”I put the box down on the seat between us. It didn’t help. I could still smell it through the cardboard, faint and cold and mean, like a penny someone had held in their mouth. We were climbing Lolo Pass in Asher’s old blue pickup, just the two of us, with the heater roaring and the radio playing country music very quietly. Micah and Dana were somewhere behind us in the black SUV with the bags and two warriors. Gideon had stayed home, propped up in his bed in the north tower with four guards at the door and orders that nobody bring him so much as a cough drop unless I had baked it with my own hands.I had sent a loaf up to him before we left. He had eaten half of it in front of me, out of spite. The road twisted up through the trees. On my side, the mou

Asher’s POV“Hold still, Luna, or I’ll pin you to the table,” said Dana. “And I’m not joking. I have forty pins in my mouth.”“You have four pins in your mouth.”“Forty. I counted.”Noa stood on a low wooden stool in the middle of the sewing room on the second floor, with her arms held out to the sides like a scarecrow, and four women of Ironwood crawling around her on their knees with tape measures and chalk. I stood in the doorway with a mug of coffee going cold in my hand. I had been told, in no uncertain terms, that I could stay as long as I didn’t speak.I had not spoken in twenty minutes. It was the hardest thing I’d done all week. The gown was blue.It had been my mother’s winter cloak. Deep, dark blue wool, so dark it was almost black in the shadows and almost violet in the light, lined with gray silk and trimmed at the collar with a thin band of silver fox. Esther Stone had worn it every winter of my childhood. She had worn it on the night she walked into the river at the bot

Noa’s POV“Don’t touch the cup,” I said. “Nobody touch the cup.”The north tower room was too hot and too bright. Somebody had turned on every lamp. Gideon Stone lay half off the bed, tangled in the blankets, with the brass handbell on the floor by his limp fingers and a teacup tipped over on the side table. A brown stain spread across the white cloth under it.His face was blue around the lips.Asher was on his knees beside the bed before I’d even cleared the doorway. He had flour in his hair. So did I. Neither of us had stopped to wipe it off.“Grandfather. Grandfather, can you hear me?”Gideon’s eyes were open a crack. Gold. Dull. He was breathing in short, ugly little pulls, as though there was a weight on his chest.I bent over the cup. I didn’t touch it. I breathed in.Mint. Honey. Valerian, the sleeping herb. And under all of it, so faint I might have missed it if I hadn’t had my nose in Asher’s poison every night for a week, a bright, cold, metal bite.“Silver,” I said. “In hi

Asher’s POV“Stay down,” I said. “Stay in the grass. Don’t move until I come back.”I said it with my mind, wolf to wolf, the way I had never been able to speak to anyone but Micah. The words went across the gap between us like a stone skipped over water, and I felt them land in her.I’m not a dog, she snapped back.I know. Please. Stay. Then I was gone up the ridge.Ari ran the way he had wanted to run for three years, with nothing holding him. The pines flashed past black and silver. The scent was easy at first. Burnt powder. Hot metal. The cold stink of silver that set every hair on my back on end. Then lavender. Then nothing.I came out onto a flat rock at the top of the ridge, a lookout shelf where my father used to bring me to watch the valley. There was nobody on it. A dent in the moss showed where someone had been lying flat on their belly. A single brass shell casing lay in a crack in the stone, still warm.I put my nose to the moss. Lavender soap. Mint. And under that, damp

Noa’s POV“He’s sending her away,” Asher said. “Tonight. To Idaho.”I set the knife down on the cutting board very carefully, so I wouldn’t throw it.He had come into the kitchen at four in the afternoon looking like a man who had walked through a fire. His shirt was creased. His jaw was tight. There was a long red scratch on his forearm, and when I looked at it, he glanced down as if he hadn’t known it was there.“Leah,” I said.“Leah.”“Sit down and tell me all of it. Term six.”He sat on the bench. He told me all of it.The study. The green curtains. The silver knife on the blue velvet, and the folded scrap of paper beside it that neither of them had touched. Reuben on the phone with Simon, talking about me as if I were a recipe he was following. Soft as butter. Kezia will put her on the ground. She’ll yield. Freely. And then the knife. He told me the last part with his eyes on the table.“He said I’d choose the pack,” he said. “In the end. He said Alphas always do.”“And then he s
