LOGINLucy POV
His question left me speechless. I wish I could explain to him… I wish he could understand too. I bend to his level, my lips curling out a soft smile as I reply. “We are going somewhere better sweetheart.” Then he speaks again. “Mom, what happened to you? You have bruises all over.” The question left me confused, speechless and didn’t know what else to say but I had to come up with something. “Sweetheart, it's nothing serious. Mom will be fine okay? Go play with your toy.” I kiss his forehead and cup his cheek and he smiles and luckily, he doesn’t ask more questions. I watch him go to play. His words keep replaying in my mind as I stand in front of the half broken bathroom mirror and force myself to look. The bruises on my cheek from Adrain have turned an ugly purple-blue, and my split lip still stings every time. Adrian expects me tomorrow but I will not be here. I dig through the bottom drawer and pull out the cheap box of a black hair dye I bought months ago and never used. My hands shake as I mix it. The chemical smell burns my nose, but I work fast, coating every strand of my long brown hair until it is dark as night. I cut the ends of my hair with scissors, making it shorter, choppier. When I rinse it out, the woman in the mirror looks like a stranger. Next comes the scent. My wolf is already weak from years of suppressants, but the mate bond still leaks my true smell. I crushed more of the bitter pills between two spoons and swallowed the powder dry and added some into my necklace pendant. My wolf whimpers low in my chest, half-asleep. This is the only way. We cannot let him find us. I dress in a gray hoodie two sizes too big, jeans, and sneakers. Eric’s small backpack sits by the door, already packed with his favorite dinosaur shirt, a half-empty bottle of medicine, and the remaining cash I did not spend at the hospital. Outside, the night air is cool, like it wants to rain. I carry Eric against my chest as I walk to my old sedan parked two blocks away. After several attempts of starting the engine, it finally works. I pull onto the empty street and drive with both hands tight on the wheel with nervousness. The plan is simple. Cross the city limits, hit the highway, and keep going until i get to a very far city where he can’t find me. Find a cheap home, change name and start a new life again. But suddenly, red and blue lights flash in the distance, then steady white beams. A line of black SUVs blocks both lanes. Men in dark uniforms stand in front of them, rifles held low but ready. They look like pack security. I know the crest on their jackets even from here, the same one Adrian’s father used to wear. My stomach drops in nervousness. I slow the car. There is nowhere to turn. One of the men raises a hand and I roll the window down, trying to act cool. “Evening, ma’am,” the first guard says. His voice is polite. “Where are you heading this late?” I keep my tone light, like any tired mother coming off a late shift. “Just closed from work. Heading home with my kid.” I tip my chin toward Eric’s sleeping body. “He’s drained out.” I add. The guard nods and steps closer, flashlight sweeping over the back seat, then over my face. I do not flinch when the light hits the bruises but surprisingly, they didn’t ask any questions. . Just then, another man walks up from the second SUV. Tall, broad-shouldered, dark hair cut short. The second he steps into the headlights I know him. Marcus. Adrian’s beta. My old friend from before everything broke. My heart starts hammering so hard I feel it in my throat. Marcus stops beside the driver’s door. His eyes move over my new black hair, the hoodie. For a second his face softens. “Lucy,” he calls in recognition. I cannot speak. My fingers tighten on the wheel until the knuckles go white. Marcus sighs. “Where are you going? Maybe Adrian was right. He said you’d try to run tonight.” The words land like ice water. He sent them. He knew. “Marcus, please…” My voice breaks. I lean closer to the open window. Marcus’s eyes drift past me toward the back seat. His expression changes the instant he sees Eric there. “Is… is that Adrian’s?” he asks quietly. My throat tightens. There is no point lying to someone who has known me for years and he knew I and Adrain had a thing. “Yes.” I say. His eyes snap back to mine. “Does he know?” I shake my head. “He knows I had a son… but he doesn’t know Eric is his.” Marcus frowns, confusion flashing across his face. “What do you mean?” “He believes I had Eric with another man.” The words scrape painfully out of my throat. “I let him believe it.” Marcus goes completely still. For a long moment, he just stares at me. “He can never find out,” he says, his voice suddenly low and urgent. “Lucy, keep this secret. You have no idea the kind of man Adrian has become. He’s violent… ruthless. No one can predict what he’ll do if he discovers you’ve been hiding his son from him for five years.” Tears sting my eyes. “So please…” My voice cracks. “Just let us go.” Pain flickers across Marcus’s face before it disappears behind duty. “I’m sorry,” he says quietly. “I have to obey his orders.” His voice stays even, almost gentle, but the men behind him already move. Two of them step toward my door. “Lucy, listen. I don’t know what happened between you and your brother. That’s not my business. I’m only following orders.” His voice stays even, almost gentle, then the two men step to my door. I twist the key, trying to throw the car into reverse, but strong hands reach through the window and grab my arm before I can shift. The door yanks open. “Don’t touch my mommy!” Eric wakes fully at the sudden movement. His small voice rises high and scared. “Don’t hurt my mommy!” Marcus moves fast. He reaches in, scoops Eric out of my lap with careful hands, and holds the boy against his chest like he has done it a hundred times. “Hey, little man,” Marcus says soft and low. “Nobody’s hurting your mom. I promise. We’re just taking you somewhere safe, okay?” Eric’s arms wrap around Marcus’s neck, but his eyes stay locked on me, wide and wet. “Mommy?” I cannot answer. The guards pull me from the car. One holds each arm. Their grips are firm but not cruel. My sneakers scrape the asphalt as they walk me toward the nearest SUV. Marcus carries Eric to the same vehicle. He settles the boy into the back seat first, buckles the seat belt himself, then nods for the men to put me in beside him. The door locks the second it closes. The car has tinted glasses. Marcus slides into the driver’s seat. One of the guards takes the passenger side. The other SUVs fall in behind us as we pull away from the blocked road. Just then, Eric’s small hand finds mine in the dark. His fingers are cold. He looks up at me, his voice small. “Mama, is he taking us to daddy?”Lucy POV My wolf snarled, It lived low in my chest, tangled up with something that pulsed every time I looked at him. My wolf didn’t stop whining. Later that day, I found him on the balcony outside my room. He was standing with his back to me, hands braced on the railing, staring out at the dark tree line like he was trying to out-stare the whole forest. The moonlight caught the sharp line of his jaw, and even from behind I could feel how tense he was, like a wire pulled too tight. My heart was hammering so hard I thought he could probably hear it. Hesitatedly, I walked to him. "Adrian…." I mutter. He didn't turn around. "I need to know," I said, my voice shaking more than I wanted it to. "Earlier, when I… when my wolf… my wolf kept saying mate. She wouldn't stop." I swallowed hard. "Do you feel it too?" He stayed mute as usual, as if I’m not even standing there at all. "Please," I continued. "Just tell me, do you feel it too? Or you dislike me so much that you didn’t notice
Lucy POV The weeks after, something between us changed even if neither of us agreed to accept it. I could see the softer side of him. It wasn't something big, It was small things, things I could have imagined if I let myself doubt them too much. A cup of tea left outside my door in the morning, still warm, like he'd timed it just right before I woke up. He always brings me things nonchalantly and they were things I needed. A ride to school when the rain came down so hard the roads flooded, him waiting in the car for me to join him without a word, like he'd known I would need him before I knew it myself. He never said he did these things for me. He never said anything at all or accepted my appreciation . If I thanked him, he'd just grunt irritatedly or look away, like the gratitude embarrassed him more than the act itself. But I noticed. I noticed everything now. Even the night the storm had come out of nowhere. One second the sky was clear, the next the clouds had rolled in hea
Lucy POV It happened so fast The fall had knocked the breath clean out of me. For a second I couldn't tell if the pounding in my chest was fear or the crash of his heart against mine, our bodies pressed too close, my hands still locked behind his neck like I'd forgotten how to let go. Adrain didn't say anything. His jaw was tight, a muscle ticking there, and his eyes swept down to my ankle before they ever came back to my face. Just then, he broke the silence. “You are bleeding.” He said, gazing down at my leg as I followed his gaze to see my toe was already bleeding. Then, without a word, he bent and swept my legs out from under me. I gasped, grabbing at his shoulders on instinct, suddenly feeling the pain. Before I could speak, I feel his hands around me as he scooped me into his hands like a briber and started walking in while I stuttered. "W-what are you doing? I can walk…" He didn’t say a word or acted like he heard me, he was still cold and nonchalant. He didn't stop f
Lucy POV After that incident, I carried every word and every look he gave around inside me nonstop. The scene kept replaying in my head, seeing Adrain standing in his father’s study, as he told the Alpha he would regret ever calling him son if anyone laid another hand on me. The memory sat unbelievable. One part of my mind kept whispering that maybe he is starting to care about me, a part is convincing me and telling me the truth I already knew: Adrain had never liked me or cared. Not from the first day my mother married his father and I became the stepsister no one wanted. He never would. Whatever he had done the night before, it was not for me. It was for his own pride, his own idea of what an Alpha heir should be. I barely slept all night. The sheets felt uncomfortable too. Every time I closed my eyes I heard his voice again and saw him. By morning my eyes burned and my head ached. During breakfast, I did not see him. The dining table in the house dining room was filled wit
Lucy POV Just then, his cold voice snapped me away from my thoughts. "Get in," he said, not looking back at me as he started walking towards the car. I hesitated for a second, rubbing at the skin on my wrist, before I followed, because what else was there to do? I had nowhere else to go, no one else who had come for me. Even if it was Adrain, even if his help came wrapped in cruelty, it was still help. The ride back to the pack house was silent. I sat in the passenger seat while he did the driving. I stayed curled against the door, watching the trees blur past the window, stealing glances at him every so often but all I could see was his usual cold look. His jaw was tight, a muscle ticking there like he was grinding his teeth, and his hands gripped the wheel harder than they needed to. Something was eating at him, but his face gave nothing else away. Cold and empty, the same face he always wore around me. I wanted to ask him why he'd come. I wanted to ask him if he actually ca
Lucy POV Adrain… He came. For a second I couldn't breathe. I didn't understand why he was here. He didn't move at first. He just stood there, watching the carriage, watching me, his jaw tight in a way I didn't recognize on him. The old man scrambled down from his seat the moment he saw who it was, his face draining of color beneath his grey hair. "Young alpha." He calls, curiously wondering why he is here. "You're going to give her back." Can Adrain's cold voice. "My father sold her to you. That sale is over." "Young alpha, I paid a fortune…" Adrain took one step forward, and the man's words died in his throat. I watched him come closer, and something in me,some old, stubborn part of me that had learned a long time ago not to expect anything good from him, still braced for him. "You will hand her over," Adrain said, colder now, and somehow that made it worse for the old man, who flinched like the words had struck him. "And then you will forget you ever met her. Forget my f
