Camille:

“Lucia,” Daniel’s mom cried out, jumping out of her seat to hug her daughter. “Cancel every other appointment we have. My daughter is here!”

Lucia surprised me by hugging her back. She looked nervous, a small grateful smile on her face. She looked nothing like the Lucia who didn’t give a sh*t about her parents.

Their dad remained seated, but he looked like he’d just seen a ghost.

Daniel’s mom led her toward the sofa she’d just vacated, tears filling her eyes. Lucia mirrored her look.

“My daughter,” Daniel’s dad called, his voice coming out like a croak. He was peering at her from above his glasses, as if he wanted to verify if she was real or if his poor eyesight was deceiving him.

While they had their little reunion in front of me, talking over one another, apologizing, making promises and saying stuff that I were too personal and intimate, I couldn’t help but notice Daniel was silent.

I found his gaze directed towards the door and I followed it only to

  • My Best Friend’s Brother Is My Sneaky Link    117 -Final Part

I drag my heavy body downstairs to the door, wondering who had to wake me up at this ungodly hour. It’s nine in the morning, but still… I’m out of breath by the time I unlock the door and from the expression on the young man’s face behind the door, I can tell I’d scared him. Who can blame me though? I feel like I’m dragging along over twenty pounds of weight with me with every step. The young man clears his throat and steps to the side. There’s a truck behind him, whose insignia is identical to the one on his shirt. A delivery company of some sort. “Good morning, ma’am,” he greets, suddenly remembering his manners. “We have a delivery for you.” He signals to the truck and three other guys come out of nowhere to deliver the contents of it. My sour look entirely disappears when I realize what’s going on. There are heaps and heaps of flowers; all the ones I like. I let them into the house, blushing all the way because even after five years of marriage, my husband still g

Camille. I felt like a deer caught in headlights. Like a child who’d been caught smoking a cigarette. “Hello, mother and father,” Daniel said so formally but casually, making no moves to stand up. Without thinking, I started to get up, not wanting to come off as disrespectful, but Daniel pinned me in place as if he had already suspected I would do that. “Good evening…” I started to say. Good evening what? Sir and ma? Lord and lady? Mother and father? Lady and gentleman? None of that sounded right. The man and woman kept studying us from that spot, making no moves to come any closer. Was this a test? Why wouldn’t they just take their seats already? This was already so awkward. They were both completely dressed, with the woman even on a full face of makeup. I wondered whether this meeting was just a stop before they went to wherever it was they had to go to. I silently hoped it was. Their faces were serious, no hint of a smile or welcome behind them. I felt so out of pla

Camille:My heart threatened to break out of my ribs with how incessantly it was beating. I simply held onto Daniel’s hand, reminding myself like a mantra that it really didn’t matter whether they liked me or not. He had so little value for their opinion and they were well aware of that. I had to silence the doubtful voice that imagined all of that ending up being a lie. The living room was empty when we stepped in, but instead of feeling relief, I felt mild irritation. Why wouldn’t they just show up already so I could get it over with. I sat down next to Daniel on the biggest sofa there, clinging onto him like a second skin. My ears, suddenly as sensitive as a dog’s picked up on every single sound that came out from the house, which wasn’t a lot. There was a bit of whispering, but as much as I piqued my ears to listen, it was unclear. It was gone just as quickly as it had appeared, making me wonder if I’d actually heard anything in the first place. A different middle-aged man who

Camille: “This…is your house?” I asked Daniel, clearly not believing what I was seeing. “As in, this is where you live.” He nodded, dismissing my surprise. He’d offhandedly told me he lived in this mansion and while I expressed my expected surprise, he seemed more bothered by whatever it was on his laptop. “Take her bags inside, and get her something to eat as well,” he ordered the uniformed maid who’d warmly welcomed me. “John,” he called the next man who was dressed in something that I could only assume was a kind of uniform as well. “Sir,” he answered dutifully. “Get the car set up. We’re going to see my parents in a few hours.” “Which one sir?” Daniel finally looked up from the stack of papers he’d been cross checking with his laptop and appeared to think for a moment. “The Bentley,” he said, as if he’d just told someone what he had for breakfast that morning. I cleared my throat and made sure my mouth was shut after gaping at him for several seconds. I

Camille: We were in the airport a few hours later and thankfully (albeit regrettably for Daniel), the entire first class cabin was fully booked so we had to fly business class and for some reason, there was minuscule difference between business class and economy here. I was surprised at first, but then it made sense that most people who could afford to go there on vacation had to be able to afford it. As we walked down the terminal toward the queue, I made a mental note of all the attractive women who were gawking at him. He didn’t seem to notice them though. His entire attention was on me as he told me a funny story of how he’d missed his first flight. His left hand was holding my carryon luggage while his other hand was draped around my waist as he spoke, so it was impossible for anyone staring at him to not see me. I looked at each one with a smug look, telling them what they needed to know with my eyes. ‘That’s right. You can look all you want but he’s mine.’ I was
