Catherine’s P.O.V

The ride home was mostly silent. I stared out the window, watching the lights blur past, my mind spinning too much for words. Xavier glanced at me once or twice, but didn’t say anything. I wasn’t sure if it was because he didn’t want to, or because he didn’t know how. Honestly, I just wanted to get home and crawl into bed.

When we finally pulled into the driveway, I didn’t wait for him. I headed to the door and as soon as the guards held it open, I walked straight to the first floor, barely acknowledging Xavier’s presence behind me.

“I’m going to bed,” I muttered, not even turning to look at him.

“Okay,” he replied softly, his voice low, almost hesitant. I could hear him following me, the faint sound of his footsteps trailing mine.

Once inside the room, I went straight to the bathroom. I washed my face, wiped off the makeup, and changed into my comfiest pajamas, feeling the weight of the night pressing down on me. When I finally collapsed onto the bed, I let out a lo

Catherine’s P.O.VThat night, I quietly made my way to the second guest room, thinking it would be better to just sleep alone. My mind was still spinning from everything that had happened, from the tension with Lydia to the impossible mess of emotions I felt about Xavier. I barely got the door open when I heard his voice behind me.“Cathy, wait.”I froze and turned around. Xavier was leaning against the doorway, looking unusually serious.“I… I don’t think you should sleep there,” he said.I raised an eyebrow. “And why is that?”“Because… It's going to be incredibly awkward if Caroline sees us sleeping in different rooms. She’ll tell my mom, and… it’ll just create misunderstandings.” His voice was low, almost pleading, but there was a strange firmness underneath it.I shook my head, trying to keep my voice steady. “Xavier… my mind is a mess. I just can’t… I can’t bring myself to share your bed right now.”He took a step closer, his hands shoved into his pockets. “Cathy… you’re overthi

Catherine’s P.O.VI stared at him, genuinely stunned, my mouth parting before I could stop it. Then my eyes slid to Caroline, whose face had gone completely pale, her hand instinctively pressing to her stomach as if to shield herself.“That’s not possible,” I said slowly, my voice tight but steady.“Xavier, I gave Caroline apple juice. I was very deliberate about it. I know she’s pregnant. I would never give her wine. Never.” I shook my head, looking between the two of them. “I brought the glasses to the table myself so they don’t get mixed up…I—I don’t…I have no idea how this could’ve happened.”Xavier didn’t interrupt me. He just listened, jaw clenched, before quietly lifting his glass.“Cathy,” he said, gently but firmly, “I got the apple juice.” He held the glass up between us like evidence.“I know you poured it yourself. I know you got us wine that I got you last Saturday. But I’m the one who got the apple juice.” His eyes searched mine. “Which means…the glass Caroline had wasn

Catherine’s P.O.VI watched myself agree to it, heard my own voice say yes like it didn’t belong to me, like it wasn’t breaking something open in my chest.“Fine,” I said quietly, then louder when Lydia tilted her head as if she hadn’t heard me properly. “Fine. If this is how it has to be, then fine.”She smiled immediately, sharp and satisfied, and I hated how quickly she accepted my surrender.“Good,” Lydia said. “At least you’re finally being reasonable.”I swallowed. “Don’t mistake this for consent. I’m doing this because I don’t have a choice.”She stepped closer. “You always have a choice, Catherine. You’re just finally choosing the right one.”“No,” I said, shaking my head. “I’m choosing the least destructive one.”As she gathered her things to leave, she stopped by the door, her hand resting on the handle. She turned back to me, her face calm, controlled, cruel in its stillness.“Let me make something very clear,” she said. “If anything happens to Caroline while she is staying

Catherine’s P.O.VSomething ugly twisted in my stomach as the pieces clicked together, slow and painful. “So this,” I said, gesturing vaguely, my voice trembling now, “this whole surrogate situation… she just dropped it on us because you were already warned. Because she knew you wouldn’t say no.”He didn’t deny it. He just nodded once, stiffly. “She told me it was necessary,” he murmured. “That the family needed an heir, and that I needed to stop being selfish and think about my future.”I let out a hollow laugh that sounded nothing like humor. “Your future,” I repeated. “By threatening to take it away.”I stared at him, my heart aching in a way I hadn’t expected, anger and sadness crashing together. “I can’t believe this,” I said. “I knew Lydia was difficult, controlling even, but this?” My voice broke. “How do you become so vicious to your own son? Over one heir?”Xavier looked down, his shoulders slumping. “She’s always been like this,” he said. “Control first. Love second. If it e

Catherine’s P.O.VI follow Xavier down the hallway without really seeing where I’m going, my legs moving on their own while my head feels too full, too loud. I hear Lydia behind us, her footsteps sharp and purposeful as she heads toward the guest bedroom, already talking to herself about drawers and space and what Caroline will need, like this is all settled and decided. When the bedroom door closes behind us, I finally exhale, pressing my palm against my chest as if that might steady my breathing.“This is completely unacceptable,” I say immediately, the words tumbling out of me before I can soften them, my voice low but shaking.“Xavier, you need to speak to your mother. You can’t just let her move her in like this. Not like this. Not without even asking me.”He turns to me, rubbing his face, his shoulders sagging in a way that makes my anger falter for just a second. “I tried,” he says, frustration sharp in his tone. “I swear to you, Cathy, I tried. I spoke to her just now, before

Catherine’s P.O.VI stared at Lydia and the surrogate in stunned silence, my mouth opening and closing like I might say something, anything, but the words refused to come. My mind was scrambling, fumbling for a foothold, and all I could do was watched as Xavier rose from his chair, his face taut with confusion and frustration.“Mom,” he said, his voice calm but edged with a tension that made my chest tighten, “what do you want? Why did you really bring Caroline here?”Lydia waved him off dismissively, that same imperious gesture that always made my skin crawl, and before Xavier could protest further, she stepped closer to Caroline, helping her sit with a gentleness I had never, not once, seen directed toward me. My heart thudded in my ears as I tried to make sense of what was happening, but nothing about this made any sense.“Catherine, Xavier,” Lydia said finally, her tone firm but oddly serene, like she was delivering a matter-of-fact announcement rather than shattering our world, “
