I stumbled back immediately, almost hitting the edge of the bedside table. My hand flew to my mouth, but no sound came out.

I just stood there, frozen, staring at the face on the bed as if staring long enough would somehow make it change.

Maybe if I blinked hard enough, if I squinted, if I prayed in my head that it wasn’t real… maybe the universe would cut me a break.

But it didn’t.

It stayed the same. It was really Lucien.

I had just had sex with Lucien.

My heart pounded so loud it felt like it was crashing against my ribs. I could barely breathe. My head spun until I couldn’t tell if it was from the shock or the burn still spreading down my throat from that stupid drink. My knees wobbled as if my legs didn’t know how to stand anymore.
