The Lost Fortress The cry of a hawk echoed across the northern mountains. Captain Rowan tightened the fur cloak around his shoulders as icy wind swept across the cliff. Below him stretched the Northern Frontier, where the kingdom's largest watchtower had stood for more than three hundred years. Now... There was nothing. No broken stones. No scorched earth. No bodies. No signs of battle. Only an empty circle of perfectly smooth black ground, nearly half a mile wide, as if the fortress had been lifted out of the earth by an invisible hand. Rowan slowly knelt and pressed his palm against the black soil. It was warm. Far too warm for snow-covered mountains. He frowned. "This isn't possible." One of his soldiers swallowed nervously. "Captain... what could erase an entire fortress?" Before Rowan could answer, a strange whisper drifted across the wind. "Come closer..." His head snapped up. "Did anyone hear that?" The soldiers exchanged confused glances. "Hear what, sir?" The whisper came again. "Find me..." Rowan drew his sword. "Spread out. Search the area." The soldiers obeyed. Minutes later, one of them shouted. "Captain! Over here!" Hidden beneath a thin layer of snow lay a single object. A child's wooden toy wolf. Fresh. Untouched. As though it had been dropped only moments ago. Rowan picked it up. Carved into the bottom were three unfamiliar symbols glowing faintly crimson. The moment his fingers touched them... A vision exploded inside his mind. He saw a city swallowed by darkness. A black moon hanging over the sky. Countless shadow creatures marching across the earth. And standing at the center of it all... A hooded man holding a staff crowned with a crimson crystal. The stranger slowly turned. Though Rowan could not see his face beneath the hood, he felt the man's gaze. Then the figure spoke. "Tell your king..." "The First Shadow King has returned." Rowan gasped and dropped the toy. The vision vanished. His soldiers rushed toward him. "Captain!" "Are you alright?" He looked down. The toy had turned into black ash. Carried away by the wind. --- Back in the capital... Kael stood inside the royal training grounds, sparring with three knights at once. Although months had passed since the final battle, he refused to let peace make him complacent. Steel clashed. One knight attacked from the left. Kael sidestepped effortlessly. A second lunged from behind. Without looking, Kael blocked the strike with the flat of his blade. The third aimed directly for his chest. Kael spun once and gently knocked the man's sword into the air. The weapon landed harmlessly in the sand. The knights laughed, lowering their weapons. "We still can't beat you, Your Majesty." Kael smiled. "One day you will." A familiar voice interrupted him. "You've said that every morning." Lyra walked across the training yard carrying Lucian. The little boy was now nearly four months old and had already become the favorite of everyone in the palace. The moment Lucian saw Kael, he laughed happily and reached toward him. Kael immediately took him into his arms. "Someone's getting heavier." "He definitely inherited your appetite," Lyra teased. Lucian grabbed Kael's finger with surprising strength. Kael laughed. "Strong already?" Selene entered the courtyard before anyone could answer. Her face was unusually serious. "Your Majesty." Kael instantly noticed the expression on her face. "What happened?" "The northern scouts have returned." "They've confirmed it." "The fortress truly disappeared." "And..." She hesitated. "They brought back something else." --- Inside the council chamber, Rowan carefully described everything he had witnessed. The empty ground. The wooden wolf. The vision. The hooded man. No one interrupted. When he finished, silence filled the room. General Marcus finally spoke. "A trick." "It has to be." Selene slowly shook her head. "No." She walked toward one of the oldest shelves in the royal library. Pulling out a dust-covered book, she opened it carefully. Its pages were so old they threatened to crumble. She stopped at an illustration. Kael leaned closer. The picture showed a man wearing the same hood Rowan had described. In his hand rested the same crimson staff. Below the drawing were faded words written in the ancient language. Selene translated them aloud. "Before the Shadow Devourer..." "...there was its master." The room became deathly quiet. Kael stared at the page. "I thought the Devourer was the greatest evil." Selene closed the book slowly. "So did I." She looked toward the window where the moon was beginning to rise. "But according to this..." "The Devourer was only a servant." --- That night... Far beneath the palace... The tiny crystal shard hidden inside the ancient ruins pulsed brighter than before. A drop of black liquid seeped from its surface. Then another. The drops merged into the outline of a human hand. Fingers slowly curled around empty air. A voice echoed through the darkness. "Wake..." Across the kingdom... Every remaining fragment of black crystal hidden beneath mountains, forests, rivers, and forgotten battlefields answered the call. One by one... They began to glow. High above, Lucian suddenly woke from his sleep. His silver-and-gold eyes opened wide. Instead of crying... He looked toward the northern mountains. Then he whispered two words that no infant should know. "He's coming." Outside the nursery window, the full moon disappeared behind a cloud as a lone raven took flight toward the north.Chapter 93 The Wolf Beneath the QueenThe army of the First World had arrived.Thousands of figures stood beyond the Eighth Door. They wore white armor.Their faces were hidden behind silver masks. Not one of them spoke. Not one of them moved. They simply stared at Lucian.Kael stood in front of his family, the Key of Eternity glowing in his hand.Beside him, Lyra held Lucian tightly.Eryndor and Astrael stood on either side.Marcus whispered,“How many are there?”Caelan looked across the endless army.“Too many.”Selene tightened her grip on her weapon.“Can we win?”Astrael didn't answer. That frightened everyone more than anything else. Then the army parted.A woman walked through them. She wore a crown of white fire. Her armor was made from silver crystal. And her eyes…were exactly like Kael's.Kael stared.“You.”The woman smiled.“You remember me.”Kael's grip tightened around the Key.“I remember enough.”She stopped before the doorway.“I am the Queen of the First World.”S
Chapter 92 The Mother Who Wasn'tNobody moved. The woman stood beneath the broken sky.A crown of stars floated above her silver hair. Her eyes were identical to Elara's.Her face was almost identical. But there was something wrong about her.Something ancient.Something that made even Eryndor step backward.Kael stared at her.“You're not my mother.”The woman smiled sadly.“No.”Kael's voice became colder.“Then who are you?”“My name is Seris.”“Why do you look like her?”“Because I created her.”Kael turned toward Elara. His mother stood frozen. Her face was pale.“You knew.”Elara couldn't answer.Kael looked between them.“You knew this entire time.”Elara finally whispered,“Yes.”Kael's jaw tightened.“Then tell me the truth.”Seris interrupted.“She doesn't know everything.”Kael looked at her.“She knows enough.”Seris shook her head.“No.”“She knows what I allowed her to remember.”The words made the air colder.Kael stepped forward.“You created my mother.”“Yes.”“Then
Chapter 91 The Ones Beyond the DoorThe fourth knock never came.Instead…The entire sky cracked.Kael stood beneath the broken heavens, Eclipse raised in his hand. The white crown lay shattered at his feet.Seraphine stared at it in horror.“No…”Kael looked at her.“What?”She didn't answer.“Seraphine.”Her eyes remained fixed on the broken crown.“It shouldn't have found us.”“What shouldn't have?”She finally looked at him.“The King Beyond.”Astrael's expression changed.“You mean…”Seraphine nodded.“The one who rules the world outside all realities.”Silence.Marcus looked around.“There's another king?”Seraphine shook her head.“No.”“He isn't a king.”“Then what is he?”She whispered,“He is what kings are afraid of.”A deep sound echoed through the sky.Not a voice. Not thunder.A heartbeat.Once.The ground shook.Twice.The mountains cracked.Three times. The Last Kingdom began collapsing.Kael stepped toward Seraphine.“What is happening?”“The door is trying to open a
Chapter 90 The Door Beyond the EndThe crack in the sky widened.Kael stood perfectly still.Eclipse was already in his hand.Beside him, Lyra held Lucian close. The others had stopped celebrating.Marcus stared upward.“What is that?”Aether's face had gone pale.“I don't know.”Marcus looked at him.“You always know.”“Not this time.”The crack widened again.A strange wind swept through the Last Kingdom. But it wasn't moving from the sky toward them.It was moving from them…Toward the crack. As if the entire world were being pulled toward it.Kael planted Eclipse into the ground.“Everyone, stay behind me.”Astrael stepped beside him.“You don't know what's on the other side.”Kael looked at him.“Neither do you.”Astrael shook his head.“No.”He looked at the crack.“And that's what scares me.”The voice came again.“The story was never about the king.”The crack pulsed.“It was about what comes after the king.”Kael raised his sword.“Show yourself.”Silence.Then something fel
Chapter 89 The Last ChoiceThe black doorway hung above the Last Kingdom. No one moved. No one breathed.Even the wind had stopped.Kael stood with Eclipse in his hand, staring at the figure emerging from the darkness. At first, there was only a silhouette. Then a face.Kael's face. But unlike the First Choice, this version had no warmth in its eyes.No sadness. No anger.Nothing.It was completely empty.Lucian suddenly stopped smiling.“Dada…”Kael looked down.“What is it?”Lucian pointed toward the figure.“Bad.”Kael's expression hardened.“I know.”The figure stepped through the doorway. The black portal closed behind it.Astrael raised his weapon.“Identify yourself.”The figure looked at him.“You already know what I am.”Astrael's face went pale.“No.”Eryndor stepped forward.“Then tell us.”The figure looked at him.“I am what remains when every choice has been made.”Silence.Kael frowned.“The Last Choice.”The figure smiled.“Yes.”Kael tightened his grip on Eclipse.“W
Chapter 88The First ChoiceKael couldn't move. The figure stood in the distance. It had his face. His eyes. His voice.Even the same scar above his eyebrow. But there was something different.Something ancient. The figure smiled.“You finally came.”Kael tightened his grip on Eclipse.“Who are you?”The figure looked at him.“You already know.”“No.”“You've known since the beginning.”Kael shook his head.“I've never seen you.”The figure smiled.“You've seen me every time you've made a choice.”Kael's eyes narrowed.“What does that mean?”The figure stepped forward.“I am the first decision ever made.”The stars around them went dark.“Before time existed…”“Before Eternity…”“Before the Void…”“There was nothing.”The figure raised one hand.“And then something asked a question.”Kael stared.“What question?”The figure looked directly into his eyes.“Should there be something instead of nothing?”A flash of light filled the space.Kael saw the beginning.Nothing.Absolute nothing
