Chapter 56

The Crimson Whisper

Three months had passed since the fall of the Shadow Devourer.

The kingdom had changed in ways no one had imagined.

The broken walls of the capital had been rebuilt stronger than before. Markets that once echoed with fear were now filled with laughter. Human merchants traded openly with wolf craftsmen, while children from both races chased one another through the streets without a second thought.

Peace, at last, had become more than a dream.

King Kael stood on the highest balcony of the royal palace, watching the sunrise paint the sky in shades of gold and crimson. The morning breeze carried the scent of fresh flowers from the royal gardens below.

For the first time in years, he allowed himself to breathe without expecting another battle.

Footsteps approached from behind.

"You've been standing here since dawn."

Kael smiled before turning around.

Lyra.

She wore a flowing silver gown instead of armor, and in her arms rested their infant son, Lucian. The child slept peacefully, one tiny hand wrapped around the edge of his mother's cloak.

Kael gently touched the baby's cheek.

"He's growing too fast."

Lyra laughed softly.

"That's what every parent says."

Lucian suddenly opened his eyes.

His left eye shimmered like molten gold.

His right glowed silver like the full moon.

Then he smiled.

Kael couldn't help smiling back.

"No matter what happens," he whispered, "I'll make sure you grow up in a world without war."

Lyra rested her head against his shoulder.

"I believe you."

Later that morning, the Great Hall filled with nobles, wolf elders, generals, and village leaders.

The first council of the united kingdom had begun.

Selene stepped forward.

"Our scouts report that the northern borders remain peaceful."

A human general nodded.

"The eastern villages have begun rebuilding. Supplies are arriving ahead of schedule."

Another elder smiled.

"For the first time in centuries, no wolf pack has reported conflict with humans."

Kael listened with quiet satisfaction.

This was the kingdom he had dreamed of.

Then the great doors burst open.

A royal messenger stumbled inside, covered in dust.

He dropped to one knee.

"Your Majesty!"

Kael stood immediately.

"What is it?"

The messenger struggled to catch his breath.

"Our northern watchtower..."

"It has vanished."

The hall fell silent.

"Vanished?" Lyra repeated.

The messenger nodded.

"There are no ruins."

"No fire."

"No signs of battle."

"It is as though the entire fortress simply... disappeared."

Selene's expression hardened.

"Magic."

That night, Kael couldn't sleep.

Something felt wrong.

The palace was quiet.

Too quiet.

As he walked through the moonlit corridors, he heard a faint sound.

A whisper.

Barely louder than the wind.

"King..."

He stopped.

The voice disappeared.

Then came again.

"Find me..."

Kael drew his sword.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

The whisper came from beneath the palace.

From the ancient ruins where the Shadow Devourer had once been imprisoned.

Hidden beneath layers of newly carved stone...

The tiny black crystal shard lying forgotten inside an ancient crack began to glow.

Once.

Twice.

Then a third time.

A thin trail of crimson smoke rose from it.

The smoke slowly formed the outline of a hooded figure.

A cold laugh echoed through the darkness.

"So..."

"The heir has been born."

The figure stretched out one shadowy hand.

"And the game begins again."

Above, in the royal nursery, baby Lucian suddenly awoke.

He didn't cry.

He stared toward the floor beneath his cradle.

His silver-and-gold eyes glowed brightly.

Then, for the first time in his short life...

He spoke a single word.

"Coming..."

The candle flames throughout the room went out at once.
