Chapter 27

The Summit of Shadows

By the time Ariana and the others reached the summit of the Isle of Eternal Wolves, the sky had darkened into a restless sea of storm clouds.

Lightning flashed beyond the mountains, illuminating the towering silver trees that lined the path. The air smelled of rain and ancient magic, and every gust of wind carried the distant howl of wolves scattered across the island.

No one spoke.

The silence wasn't empty—it was heavy, filled with the knowledge that whatever waited ahead had been preparing for this moment long before any of them were born.

Orion stopped at the edge of a wide stone platform overlooking the sea.

"This," he said, "is where the first Moon Queen made her covenant with the Moon Goddess."

At the center of the platform stood a weathered altar carved from white crystal. Time had worn away most of its details, but one symbol remained untouched: a crescent moon cradling a wolf.

Ariana felt drawn toward it.

As soon as her fingertips brushed the cold stone, a gentle warmth spread through her hand.

The altar responded.

Silver light rippled across its surface, revealing a map that floated in the air like a living memory.

Kael stepped closer.

"Is that... the kingdoms?"

Orion nodded.

"The world as it existed five hundred years ago."

The glowing map slowly changed.

Kingdoms vanished.

Forests burned.

Rivers turned black.

One by one, lights representing entire wolf clans went dark until only a handful remained.

Ariana's chest tightened.

"This wasn't just a war."

"No," the Blood King answered quietly. "It was an extermination."

His voice carried none of its usual arrogance.

Only regret.

"I spent centuries believing revenge would bring me peace. By the time I understood I had been chasing the wrong enemy, there was almost nothing left to save."

Kael glanced at him.

For the first time, he didn't see a legendary tyrant.

He saw a man carrying five hundred years of failure.

Before anyone could speak again, the mountain trembled beneath their feet.

A deep crack split the altar.

The silver light vanished.

A violent pulse of dark energy rolled across the summit, forcing everyone to shield their eyes.

From the forest below came the sound of snapping trees.

Something enormous was climbing the mountain.

One of the Guardians tightened his grip on his spear.

"It's here."

Moments later, a massive silhouette emerged through the mist.

The Beast of the Abyss.

Its body resembled a wolf, but its fur was black as burned ash, with crimson veins glowing beneath its skin like molten lava. Jagged horns curved backward from its skull, and every step left scorched footprints in the stone.

It wasn't rushing toward them.

It walked slowly, almost curiously.

Its golden eyes settled on Ariana.

"So..." it rumbled.

"The last Moon Queen has returned."

Its voice was unexpectedly calm.

Almost human.

Kael instinctively moved in front of Ariana, while the Guardians formed a defensive line.

The beast stopped several yards away.

"If I wanted to kill her," it said, "none of you would have time to draw another breath."

No one challenged the claim.

Looking into those ancient eyes, they knew it was true.

The beast lowered its head slightly.

"I did not come to fight."

The words caught everyone off guard.

"I came to warn you."

Even the Blood King looked surprised.

"Warn us?"

The creature's gaze drifted toward the crimson horizon.

"The Shadow Prophet believes he is opening the prison."

A low growl escaped its throat.

"He is mistaken."

"What do you mean?" Ariana asked.

The beast looked directly at her.

"There is no prison."

Only silence answered.

Kael frowned.

"That doesn't make any sense."

"It will."

The beast's eyes darkened.

"The world has forgotten the truth."

"It was never built to imprison the King of Darkness."

"It was built..."

Its voice dropped to a whisper that somehow echoed across the entire summit.

"...to protect the world from him."

Ariana felt a chill run through her body.

"They're not the same thing."

"No."

The beast slowly turned away, looking toward the sea.

"If the barrier falls, he will not escape."

"He will return."

Lightning split the sky.

For an instant, the entire summit glowed white.

When the light faded, the beast had vanished.

Only the scorched ground remained where it had stood.

No footprints.

No scent.

Nothing.

The Guardians exchanged uneasy glances.

Orion was the first to speak.

"In all my centuries..."

"I have never seen the Beast refuse a battle."

The Blood King stared into the distance, his expression unreadable.

"Neither have I."

Ariana looked at the empty place where the creature had disappeared.

Its warning echoed in her mind.

He will return.

Not escape.

Return.

She had the unsettling feeling that every story she had learned about the Moon Kingdom had been built on half-truths.

And if the Beast had spoken honestly...

Then somewhere in the shadows, someone had spent centuries rewriting history.

A cold wind swept across the summit.

Far below, beyond the forests and cliffs, dozens of crimson lights flickered to life.

Then hundreds.

Then thousands.

Kael's expression hardened.

"They've found the island."

Orion climbed onto the ancient watchtower and looked toward the shoreline.

His face paled.

"The Shadow Prophet's army..."

He paused, struggling to believe what he was seeing.

"They're crossing the sea."

Ariana followed his gaze.

Across the black water, countless ships emerged through the fog, their sails dyed the color of dried blood. At their bows flew the silver mask of the Shadow Prophet, and behind them marched an army so vast it seemed to swallow the horizon.

The battle they had hoped to delay was no longer days away.

It had arrived at their doorstep.
