Chapter 26

Between Love and Destiny

The roar from beneath the island lingered long after it faded, vibrating through the cavern floor.

Dust drifted from the ceiling in thin streams as Ariana stared into the widening crack. Those crimson eyes disappeared again, but the feeling they left behind remained—an ancient, suffocating presence that made it difficult to breathe.

King Aldren stood unmoving, as though the beast's awakening had been expected.

"The final trial cannot be delayed," he said quietly.

Kael's attention snapped away from the chasm. "Didn't you hear that? Whatever is down there is waking up."

"I heard it."

"Then stop this trial."

"If the Queen cannot make this choice," Aldren replied, "she will never be strong enough to face what is coming."

The old king's calm voice only deepened Kael's frustration.

"There has to be another way."

"There never has been."

Silence settled over the cavern.

Ariana looked from Aldren to Kael. She understood why he was angry. She wanted to believe there was another answer too.

Just minutes ago she had learned that every Moon Queen carried the same burden—that one day she might have to give her life to seal the Heart of the Abyss.

She had faced monsters without fear.

But this truth frightened her.

Not because she feared death.

Because she feared leaving Kael behind.

Kael met her eyes through the wall of silver light separating them.

"Don't listen to them," he said firmly. "We'll find another solution. We always do."

His certainty warmed her heart.

It reminded her of the first time he had stood beside her when the entire pack had mocked her.

Back then, neither of them had realized how much their lives would change.

She smiled faintly.

"You've always made impossible things sound easy."

He laughed, though there was little joy in it.

"I have to. Otherwise you'd worry too much."

For a brief moment, the fear inside the cavern seemed to disappear.

Aldren watched them in silence before speaking again.

"Love is a ruler's greatest strength."

He paused.

"And also the easiest weakness to exploit."

He lifted one hand.

The silver barrier dissolved.

Kael crossed the distance between them in two quick strides and pulled Ariana into his arms.

Neither of them spoke.

They simply held each other while the cavern shook around them.

Finally, Kael rested his forehead against hers.

"If the day ever comes when someone asks you to die for this world..."

His voice caught.

"...don't agree because you think it's your duty."

Ariana looked up at him.

"What if it's the only way?"

"Then I'll fight the whole world until I find another."

She laughed softly through her tears.

"You really are stubborn."

"So I've been told."

Even Aldren allowed himself a small smile.

"The trial is complete."

Kael frowned.

"What?"

"The question was never meant for the Queen alone."

Aldren's gaze settled on them both.

"It was meant to reveal whether your hearts carried the same answer."

He turned toward Ariana.

"A ruler who sacrifices herself without hope brings only despair."

Then he looked at Kael.

"A protector who refuses every sacrifice dooms those he wishes to save."

"The two of you must learn to carry both hope and responsibility together."

Before either of them could respond, the mountain shook with terrifying force.

This time the sound came much closer.

A crack raced across the cavern wall.

Orion burst through the entrance, his silver armor covered in dust.

"My Queen!"

He dropped to one knee, breathing hard.

"The Beast has broken through the first seal."

Aldren's expression darkened.

"So soon..."

"The Shadow Prophet has accelerated the ritual."

"The island's outer defenses won't hold much longer," Orion continued.

"We need every Guardian at the summit."

Ariana straightened.

"Then let's go."

As they left the cavern, none of them noticed the faint shadow lingering in the deepest corner of the chamber.

Two golden eyes watched them disappear into the sunlight.

A familiar voice whispered into the darkness.

"They're becoming stronger than expected."

Another voice answered from somewhere unseen.

"It won't matter."

"When the Queen reaches the summit..."

"...bring me the Alpha alive."

The shadow faded.

Far above, storm clouds gathered over the Isle of Eternal Wolves.

For the first time since arriving on the island, Ariana felt that the greatest danger was no longer the Beast beneath the mountain.

It was the unseen enemy who seemed to know every step they would take.
