Chapter 4

Author: Mr. Trouble
On the day of the engagement party, Diana arrived with the entire wedding planning team in tow.

Red roses intended for the engagement were still arranged across the living room, but people were already hauling in floral arches, bouquets, and a guest sign-in desk outside the front door.

Mom panicked. "Isn't this just an engagement party? Why are you moving in things for the wedding too?"

Diana maintained a composed smile. "There's been a change of plans. We are holding the wedding ceremony together with the engagement party today."

Mom’s face drained of color. "Why the rush?"

Diana turned to look at me, her voice retaining the refined warmth of high society. "The Fitzgeralds' projects are undergoing restructuring by the end of the month. Elliot needs a stable spouse by his side."

Those words hung heavily in the air.

I set my cup down. "I refuse."

The living room fell into silence.

Mom was the first to snap. "Willow, have you lost your mind? We’ve already accepted, and the guests are here. You're saying no now?"

Poppy stood by the stairs, her fingers clutching her skirt tightly. She was wearing a white dress again today, her subtle makeup applied as if she had deliberately mirrored my exact face.

She stared at me, her breathing quickening. Her chance had finally arrived.

Over the past few days, she had copied me wearing the wedding dress, putting on my jewelry, reading the vows, and even messaging Elliot. Now, seeing me call off the marriage, she assumed I was simply playing hard to get.

She couldn't grasp why I was backing out, only that she had to snatch the opening I left behind.

Elliot stepped up to me and lowered his voice. "Willow, don't make a scene. Once today is over, we can discuss everything else."

I looked up into his eyes. "Discuss what exactly?"

His expression finally stiffened.

Poppy couldn't hear his low murmur, only catching my refusal. Eyes rimmed red, she immediately stepped forward.

"If Willow isn't willing... I can take her place."

"Poppy?" Mom asked.

Diana, however, looked her up and down. "This isn't a game of house."

Poppy straightened her spine, acting as if the spotlight had finally shone on her. "I'm not playing around. I’m willing to take care of Elliot, and I’m willing to face everything alongside the Fitzgeralds."

Elliot stared at her for two long seconds. In those brief seconds, the hesitation in his eyes completely dissolved. To him, whoever was willing to sign was Mrs. Fitzgerald.

I looked at Poppy. "Are you sure?"

She let out a triumphant smile. "Willow, you won't regret this, will you?"

I smiled back. "Not at all."

The wedding moved along in a rush. Before the guests could even process the news that the engagement party had been turned into a full wedding, the officiant was already inviting the bride and groom onto the stage.

Poppy walked out wearing that repaired wedding dress. Under the bright lights, the mended seam along the side of her waist still showed a slight bump, but she didn't care. Raising her hand to show off her ring, she cast a smug glance across the crowd straight at me.

When it came time to sign the registry, she picked up the pen, her wrist instinctively flicking upward. She almost wrote "Willow Palmer".

The coordinator instantly pressed a hand over the paper. "Ms. Poppy, please sign your own name."

A few muffled laughs broke out among the guests nearby. Poppy’s face turned red for a second, but she quickly lifted her chin back up.

"Starting today, I am Mrs. Fitzgerald." She looked at me, genuinely convinced she had won.

I stood at the back of the crowd, holding a microphone in my hand.

When it was time to exchange vows, Poppy held her card, reading every single word without missing a beat.

"For better or for worse, I will stand by Elliot and share every burden."

Diana smiled with satisfaction. Beside her, their attorney, Mike, closed his folder.

I could hear people in the audience whispering praises, remarking how the Palmers' younger daughter was far bolder and more sensible than their oldest.

I raised the microphone to my lips. "Poppy, do you know why the Fitzgeralds were so desperate to get married today?"

Poppy’s expression shifted instantly. "What are you talking about?"

I turned my eyes toward Mike standing at the edge of the stage. "Why don't you ask him?"

Mike adjusted his glasses and opened his folder. "The debt restructuring agreement for the Fitzgeralds strictly requires a signature from a spouse. The current pending amount to be confirmed is one hundred and eighty-six million dollars."

He looked up at the stage. "Mr. Fitzgerald didn't need a bride today. He needed a Mrs. Fitzgerald who could sign her name and take the fall."

The fallout from the Fitzgeralds' massive debt arrived even faster than I had anticipated.Elliot was taken away for questioning, Diana was cornered at the company entrance by creditors, and the once-glamorous lobby of the Fitzgerald Group was plastered with formal demand letters.Poppy received a legal notice as well. With the signed prenuptial agreement, the forged signature, and the identity impersonation, she was required to cooperate with authorities on every single count. She sat in Mike’s office holding the notice, her voice raspy from weeping. "I just wanted to be Mrs. Fitzgerald..."Mike looked at her. "Now you are."Poppy’s sobbing came to a sudden halt. This was likely the first time she realized that a title didn't just bring diamond rings, wedding dresses, and the envy of onlookers. It brought crushing liability, too.Mom ended up selling the house she had originally saved for Poppy. The final closing price was far lower than she had hoped, but because she was despe

Poppy made her move to run at four in the morning. She wore a beige coat that matched mine, carried an identical suitcase, and even tied her scarf the exact way I usually did. Watching her leave through the security camera, I noticed she had even applied the same subtle makeup I normally wore. She truly believed that as long as she looked like me, she could dump her problems on me and walk away. What she didn't realize was that I had already replaced my identification and reported my old copies lost long ago. There weren't many people at the station. The early morning waiting area was bathed in stark, cold white light, with the PA system repeatedly reminding passengers to present valid identification for real-name verification.Poppy pulled her hat brim lower and handed over the ID.The machine beeped, and a bright red light flashed. The station employee checked the screen, then looked up at her. "Please take off your mask."Poppy’s hand trembled visibly. "I have a cold."The e

When the chat history was leaked, Mom was the first one to panic. She called Diana over and over again, but nobody answered. Desperate, she tried explaining things to our relatives, claiming Poppy just felt bad for her older sister and that the Palmers had no intention of taking advantage of the Fitzgeralds.Nobody bought it, though. The Fitzgeralds' creditors moved even faster than our relatives. Mom was in the middle of screaming at me in the living room when the news broke that the family's bank accounts had been frozen."Your sister is already in this state! How much further are you going to push her?!"The words had barely left her mouth when her phone rang. A representative from the bank informed her that two properties under her name were involved in a guarantee dispute and required her cooperation in the investigation.Mom leaned against the sofa for support, the color draining from her face bit by bit.Poppy heard it, too. Her very first reaction wasn't fear, but crying

Mike’s office was located on the twenty-seventh floor in the city center.Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the sky was overcast and gray. Poppy sat across from me, gripping the statement tightly. Dark circles hung under her eyes from a sleepless night, yet the moment she saw me, she forced her shoulders straight."Willow, now that we're here, you can stop pretending. You signed this statement."She pushed the paper to the center of the desk.On the signature line, the name "Willow Palmer" was written. It really did look remarkably like mine, right down to the upward flick on the final stroke.I took a glance. "Looks pretty convincing."Poppy’s eyes lit up.That was what she had loved hearing most growing up. Looking like me, looking real enough to confuse everyone, looking so convincing that she could take my things with a clear conscience.Mom had come along, too. Sitting to the side, her face looked haggard, but the first words out of her mouth were still the same."Wil

Poppy naturally refused to step outside. She double-locked the door and sat in front of the vanity, her shoulders shaking violently as she wept. Half an hour ago, she was boasting in front of the cameras that she was Mrs. Fitzgerald. Now, those exact three words turned into the heavy pounding of debt collectors on the door.Mom paced back and forth. "Willow, go explain it to them right now! The whole thing was just a big misunderstanding!""A misunderstanding about what?" I asked her. "She wore the wedding dress herself. She read the vows. She signed her own name."Cornered by my words, Mom scowled and turned her attention to comforting Poppy instead.Wiping her tears, Poppy grabbed her phone. "I’m going to show everyone how ruthless you really are!" Within minutes, she drafted a long post and shared it to her Instagram as well as the family group chat. The narrative was crafted fast, claiming that her sister set her up to take her place in the marriage. Apparently, I’d been

  • My Copycat Sister   Chapter 5

The moment the door to the green room swung shut, the applause and chatter from the outside were completely cut off.The blush on Poppy’s face couldn’t hide how pale she looked. Diana pushed a document in front of her, no longer even bothering to fake a polite smile."Sign it."Poppy took a step back. "I was just filling in for my sister to finish the ceremony..."Diana snorted. "Mrs. Fitzgerald, the ceremony isn't over yet."That title of Mrs. Fitzgerald had been a trophy Poppy was so desperate to steal just minutes ago. Now, it read like a death sentence.Poppy turned to Elliot. "Elliot, tell them! Tell them I didn't mean it like that!"Elliot avoided her gaze. "Poppy, the Fitzgeralds need you right now. Just help us get through this hurdle, and I won't treat you wrong."I had heard those exact words before—at the bridal shop, the menu tasting, and every single time he needed me to play along. His gentleness was nothing more than a thin veneer hiding a mountain of debt.Fina
