Chapter 4

Author: Harvest
It was Sam’s phone, but a woman had answered it!

Judging by her voice, she was around thirty.

I was stunned, and anger surged within me. But what she said next made me realize that it was not the right time to snap.

She snarled impatiently. “Whoever you are, you stupid witch, you’re really pissing me off. Damn you for ruining my night!”

She hung up after that, and I shot to my feet.

That voice sounded too familiar, especially the way she said the words, “Stupid witch!”

It was the same woman from the call, one of Aurora’s killers.

My husband was with the murderer!

Were Sam and the murderer working together?

No. That could not be. Before I even got pregnant, he would always say how much he wanted a daughter.

He joked that sons could be such handfuls. At a certain age, they might even become so mischievous that it drove everyone crazy.

A daughter was different. She would be his sweet and gentle little princess.

‘Oh, no! Sam must be in danger!’

The thought chilled me to the bone.

I called Jared right away and told him what happened as I hurried to change clothes.

“Please, you have to pull all the strings you can and find Sam as soon as possible. He’ll die if we wait any longer.”

I knew the rule that no missing person could be reported until after 24 hours.

Plus, Sam’s phone had been answered, though it had not been him on the line.

Everything had to be done according to procedure. I had no intention of putting Jared in a difficult position either. But I had lost Aurora, and I could not lose Sam too.

“Calm down, Claire. Listen to me. I heard every word, and I promise you that I won’t let anything happen to Sam. Just stay home and wait for my call.”

“Okay, I’ll wait.”

I had to believe him. Jared had never lied to me, not even when we were kids.

I paced back and forth across the living room with my phone gripped tightly in my hand.

Every few seconds, I would check the screen. Whether it was a call across time from Aurora or a call from Jared, I could not afford to miss either one.

I knew I was a wreck since I was panicking and unstable, but I could not help it.

Five minutes passed, then ten, then twenty…

It became the length of a battle in an online game, two episodes of an anime, and five songs on repeat.

Twenty minutes were so short, yet it felt like an eternity.

Eventually, the phone in my hand lit up.

It was Jared!

“Claire, Sam’s alive.”

“Thank goodness. I’m so glad he’s okay.”

My tension eased, and I could breathe again.

“But…”

That word hit me like a gut punch, and my breath caught.

A terrible image flashed in my mind.

Sam was alive, but that woman had tortured him terribly.

Like Aurora, he had been bludgeoned. His body was bloodied beyond recognition, and he was on the verge of life and death.

The words that came next suffocated me further.

“Sam’s having an affair.”

However, I sighed in relief a moment later. It took me a few seconds to comprehend what he had just said.

Should I be thankful or furious?

I snorted and asked Jared where he was.

When the call ended, I slapped myself hard across the face twice.

I forced myself to stay calm.

Since Jared claimed that Sam was cheating, he must have caught him in the act.

It had not even been thirty minutes since that woman answered Sam’s phone.

That could only mean one thing: Sam was indeed having an affair with her, the woman who had murdered Aurora!

At this moment, I finally understood why Aurora could reach me across time.

There was injustice and a terrible, cosmic wrong.

Even if I could not save her, I would avenge her!

I would not let that witch and that cheater get away with this!

The three of them had been happily spending time like a family right under my nose!As for me? I was the biggest fool alive, the ultimate sucker!I drove home after work as usual that day. When I got home, I saw Jennifer in Aurora’s bedroom. The door was partially open. Meanwhile, she was holding Aurora’s arm and telling her to call her “Mom.”Up to that point, I had only been suspicious. But with those words, my doubts hardened into certainty.I burst into the room with rage and swung the desk lamp at Jennifer’s head. She screamed and fought back. We wrestled and yanked each other’s hair, as neither of us had any plans of backing down. In the struggle, I accidentally bumped into my daughter. Caught off guard, she fell hard against the desk.A child’s bones were so fragile, and her spine snapped as a result. On top of that, the back of her head struck a sharp crystal ornament.Aurora collapsed to the floor, and in an instant, bright red blood spread beneath her.Even

At that hour, Sam was usually in his study. I told Aurora to slip quietly out of the apartment without him noticing. This time, the door was not locked, and she made it out without any trouble.Time passed, and after a while, I reckoned that she should have stepped out of the elevator. However, when I called out to her, she responded in a startled voice, “You’re not my mom. I just saw my mom walk out of the lobby. Who are you? What are you trying to do?”I was stunned and confused. How could she have seen me? At that time, I should have just arrived at the office.I quickly told her a secret that only the two of us would know. She chose to believe me, so I urged her to follow the woman quietly and see what she was up to.“She’s back! I have to hide. She just got into the elevator and pressed the 27th floor. That’s our floor.”I quickly told her to take the other elevator and follow the woman.Moments later, her stifled gasp came through the phone.“She just used a key to op

The pain made me grit my teeth. My body instantly gave out as I collapsed to the floor with a heavy thud. My eyelids grew unbearably heavy. Through my squinted eyes, I caught a glimpse of Sam standing over me with a baseball bat in his hand. He sneered and said, “Tsk, tsk. You just couldn’t behave, could you?”Then, I lost consciousness completely. When I came to, I realized that I might have gone back to the day before. The back of my head was smooth and unhurt.Sam was nowhere to be seen, and I was alone in the apartment. Right then, a familiar ringtone echoed in my ear. It was Aurora!“Mom, didn’t we just pay the electric bill yesterday? The power went out. I’m so scared. Where are you, Mom? Please come home.”They were the same opening words. I did not know if this was my last chance.I could not let anything happen to Aurora. So, I quickly laid out all the instructions for her to follow. She was to close all the doors and windows, especially the ones in the kitche

I quickly told my daughter to check the cabinet by the entryway for the spare key. At the same time, I asked her what time it was over there. It was 2:50 a.m.! In just ten minutes, the murderers would climb in through the window. If Aurora could take the elevator down before then, she would still have time to escape! However, Aurora told me the spare key was gone.I started biting my nails in a panic. The spare key had always been kept in that cabinet. How could it suddenly disappear? Had Jennifer stolen it?This was bad. Aurora was trapped! Was this it? Was her death inevitable? If she could not get out, she had to hide.Yes, the water in the bathtub! She had taken a bath that night. I told Aurora to carry a pile of clothes into the bathtub and pour in more laundry detergent. It would create the illusion that dirty laundry was soaking. She could hide beneath it. Her smartwatch was waterproof, so we could stay on the call.“Mom, someone’s coming in. It’s Dad! “H

Jared tracked Sam down to a hotel. He was worried that it might be unsafe for me to go there alone at this hour. So, he asked me to meet him at the 24-hour convenience store below my complex. He then handed me two photos. The first showed Sam being dead drunk in nothing but his boxers. He was lying on a round red bed with a woman in a lace nightgown. She had long, dark hair, and her face was hidden as she lay on top of him.The second was a casual photo of the woman. She was wearing a flowing white dress, while her hair was swept up low and secured with a hairpin. Even though it was only a side profile, I instantly recognized who it was.She was Jennifer Ackles, Aurora’s piano teacher.Jennifer had been coming to our house every weekend for piano lessons since Aurora was two. During summer and winter breaks, her visits would be even more frequent. She had asked more than once if she could be Aurora’s godmother.I always thought that she just genuinely adored her.She wou
