Chapter Forty: Fend for Oneself

I kept my eyes straight ahead as four large gray wolflike humanoids began to make their way towards us through the garden. How they had managed to get in without the guards seeing them was beyond me, but at this current point in time, that truly didn't matter.

"Brother." Maria whimpered, quickly hiding behind Elias. "Do something!"

"Elias." Veronica added, her face paling. "Where are the guards? Shouldn't they be around to handle these monsters?"

Frowning, Elias didn't respond as he kept his gaze fixed straight ahead, watching as the Lycans continued to close the distance.

"Maria and Veronica." He hissed, never letting his eyes leave the lycan. "When I count to 3, I need both of you to run as quickly as you can back to the castle and get help."

"But brother..." Maria began, only to be stopped by a growl from one of the lycans.

"Don't argue, and just do what I say." Elias continued, reaching into a bag on his hip and producing a dagger. "I need the both of you to get to safety."
