#Chapter 7: The Bonfire

Third Person POV

The phone rang once. Twice. Three times. Then nothing.

Derek pulled it from his ear and stared at the screen. Call Failed. He tried again. Same result. A third time.

It took him four attempts to understand.

She had blocked him.

His jaw clenched until the muscles in his neck went taut. The team went quiet around him. Someone cleared his throat. Nobody collected the money.

She had blocked him. The girl who answered his texts in nineteen seconds. The girl who had never, not once in three years, refused him anything. She had blocked his number and left him standing here with an audience.

"So..." one of the guys started.

"Shut up."

He shoved his phone into his gym bag and yanked the zipper hard enough to jam it. His hands were shaking. Not from sadness. From the fury of being told no by someone who'd never said no before.

She was angry about Brielle. Fine. She'd found something she wasn't supposed to see and she was throwing a tantrum. Let her throw it. She'd calm down in a day or two, unblock him, and come crawling back the way she always did. She didn't have a wolf. She didn't have status. She didn't have a single person at this school who would take her if he let go. She needed him. She had always needed him. Where else was she going to go?

He walked off the field without paying. Nobody asked him to.

Lila's POV

That evening, Gemma found me at my desk with a half-finished essay and a pen between my teeth.

"You're not seriously studying right now." She leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. "The bonfire starts in an hour."

"I don't have anything to wear." I didn't look up. "I'll just embarrass myself."

"You will absolutely not." She crossed the room and closed my laptop. "I'm doing your hair and we're going."

From the other bed, our suitemate groaned and pulled her blanket over her head. She'd been running a fever since noon, her face flushed and miserable. "Take my dress," she said, muffled. "The new one on my chair. I just bought it and I am not letting it go to waste."

The dress was ivory with thin straps and a fitted waist. It showed my collarbones and fell just above my knees. It was nicer than anything I owned. My roommate curled the ends of my hair and painted my lips a color she called ambitious nude and when I looked in the bathroom mirror I barely recognized the girl looking back.

"Perfect," she said. "Let's go find you some trouble."

The bonfire was roaring when we arrived. The flames climbed high enough to light the whole clearing and I felt the heat on my face from thirty feet away. The air smelled like smoke and pine and cheap cologne. Students clustered in groups everywhere, girls in dresses, boys in suits and borrowed blazers, everyone holding drinks and laughing too loud over the music. The bass from the speakers vibrated in my ribs.

I tugged at the strap of the borrowed dress. It fit but it wasn't mine and I was very aware of that fact. My roommate linked her arm through mine and pulled me forward.

Then the crowd near the front shifted. Girls started screaming. Not frightened screams. The kind that came with grabbing each other's arms and rising onto tiptoe.

Professor Aldrich Awalked into the clearing.

He wore a black tailcoat with satin lapels that caught the firelight. His tie was a perfect Windsor knot against a white shirt. He was taller than anyone around him by half a head and broader by a full shoulder width, and he moved through the crowd like it wasn't there. His jaw was set, his posture straight, his expression uninterested in being admired.

Gemma's nails dug into my forearm. "Oh my God," she whispered. "He came. He never comes to these."

"Why not?"

"Because he doesn't need to." She was still whispering even though we were fifty feet away. "His family is old money — like, generations of it. He's running for president after his teaching contract ends. His entire life is meetings and elections and expanding the pack's reach. He doesn't have time for parties."

I watched him accept a glass from a passing server without making eye contact. Even from here, I could feel it. That pull. Something about the way he moved made my mouth go dry and I hated myself for noticing.

"Tonight," Gemma said, gripping my arm harder, "every girl in this school is going to lose her mind."

The dance lottery was the main event. Partners were drawn by Alpha-ranked teachers and students from a glass bowl. If an Alpha drew your name, you danced. No exceptions. No refusals. That was the rule.

Near the bonfire, a cluster of girls whispered and pushed each other, fixing their hair, adjusting straps. Brielle Brielle stood at their center, her glossy dark hair pinned up, her red dress fitted like armor. Her followers fussed around her.

"She'll definitely get the professor," one of them said. "Or at least the captain."

"Obviously. She always gets the best partners."

Brielle tipped her chin with a practiced smile. "They're both wonderful," she said. "I'd have such a hard time choosing."

One of her girls spotted me and nudged the others. They looked me up and down. The borrowed dress, the uncertain posture, the absence of any wolf anyone could sense. Their mouths curled.

"Don't get your hopes up, sweetheart," one of them said. "This isn't the library. Why don't you go back to writing your little papers?"

Another one covered her mouth. "Can you imagine? A wolfless girl at the bonfire dance. Who would even draw her?"

I didn't answer. Gemma opened her mouth to say something sharp but I squeezed her arm. It wasn't worth it. I turned toward the bonfire and told myself the heat on my face was from the flames.

The announcer stepped forward with the glass bowl. Names were drawn. Partners were assigned. Girls shrieked or groaned or clutched each other's hands. Brielle's name was not called. Her smile tightened by degrees.

Then the announcer paused. Looked at his paper. Looked again.

"We have a duplicate," he said. "Two Alpha draws — same partner."

The clearing went still.

He read the names. The captain. The professor.

Both had drawn me.

Lila's POVI said yes.My knees still ached from the hospital floor. The bruises on my elbows had turned yellow-green overnight, and when I lifted my arms to pull on a sweater, the scrapes stung. None of that stopped me.The rational part of my brain screamed at me the entire time I was getting ready. This was reckless. This was a stranger from the internet with a reputation for being merciless. But I was a writer. A writer who'd only ever imagined submission had a ceiling. If I wanted to write it real, I needed to feel it.I put on the purple mask. The dom had said not to bring anything. No lingerie. No props. Just myself, on time. I pulled on jeans and a sweater and my worn canvas sneakers, looking exactly like what I was: a literature student heading somewhere she couldn't explain. The address was a villa on the hill above the academy. Wrought-iron gate. Gravel drive. Stone and glass perched on the ridge, larger than my entire dormitory. No lights on inside. The front door was unlo

Lila's POVI bit the hand holding my jaw.My teeth sank in hard enough to taste copper. The man howled and jerked backward, and in the second his grip loosened, I spat. Most of the liquid that had been forced past my lips hit the gravel. Some of it was already burning down my throat.I ran.My legs were shaking. My lungs screamed. I sprinted down the dark path with no destination except away — away from the amber eyes and the vial and the hands that wanted to mark me. Branches slashed my arms. My foot caught a root and I stumbled, caught myself, kept running."Get her!"Footsteps behind me. Fast. Wolf-fast.I opened my mouth to scream for help, but the cloth they'd stuffed in had scraped my throat raw. All that came out was a strangled rasp. The darkness was total. The dormitory lights were a distant glow. Then something massive hit the man closest to me.Not something. A wolf. Enormous, coal-black, broad through the shoulders, moving with a speed that made the air crack. The wolf cau

Derek went to the police station with his chin up and his voice carrying."My father will have me out in ten minutes," he told the officers. "You're wasting your time."I gave my statement in a side room with a female officer who took notes without expression. Yes, he'd grabbed me. Yes, there were witnesses. No, I didn't want to press additional charges — the bonfire harassment complaint was enough. When I stepped outside, a single text from Professor Aldrich waited on my screen. You're not expelled. Don't give me a reason to reconsider. It took me a moment to realize he was joking. Or as close to joking as he got.Thank you, I typed back. I hope I didn't cause you trouble. You can repay me by not failing the midterm.I pocketed the phone. Something warm and stupid spread through my chest. At the station, Derek was not having the quick exit he'd promised.I heard the details over the next few days, secondhand and third-hand, passed down from the football team to the campus security gu

  • My Dom Is my Alpha Professor   #Chapter 12: The Accusation

Lila's POVThe café went quiet.Derek crossed the floor in three strides. Students at nearby tables looked up from their laptops. A girl in the corner lowered her coffee cup.He didn't stop until I could smell the grass and sweat on his jersey. His jaw was clenched so tight the muscles in his neck stood out."So this is what you've been doing." His voice was low and ugly. "I thought you were busy training. Turns out you've been baking cakes for your professor."He grabbed my arm and pulled me away from the table. My chair scraped against the floor."Let go of me.""When did you start this?" His fingers dug into my bicep. He steered me toward the hallway, away from the staring crowd. "Was it before or after you dumped me? How long have you been sneaking around behind my back like a —""Don't finish that sentence."He finished it anyway. The word hit me like a slap.I looked at him. Really looked. The boy I'd loved for three years, brought coffee to every morning, skipped exams for. The

Lila's POVGemma was scrubbing mascara off my cheekbone with a damp cotton pad when my phone buzzed."Hold still." She tilted my chin toward the lamp. "You smeared everything when you bolted from the dance floor."I hadn't bolted. I'd walked. Briskly. With intention. She didn't need to know that the professor's eyes had bled crimson during the waltz, or that the pull at the base of my spine had been so violent I'd nearly tripped over a speaker cable. I could still feel his hand on my waist, the warmth of his palm seeping through borrowed silk. Some things were better locked away.My phone buzzed.I picked it up. A direct message from the forum app. A username I would have recognized from across a crowded screen. The dom.The same dom every submissive on the platform had bookmarked. The one who never reached out first.Same arrangement.Same hotel, 619.My pulse spiked. Thousands of women would have killed for this message. • My Dom Is my Alpha Professor   #Chapter 10: The Wolf

Lila's POVDerek was staring at my thigh. Not at me. At the mark. His eyebrows were drawn together and his nostrils were flared. He had never left that mark. He had never touched me hard enough to leave anything at all. In three years, he had barely touched me. So who had?I looked away from him before he could ask. That was when I felt it. A gaze heavier than my ex's, hotter, fixed on the exact same spot. Not curious. Intense. The place where his eyes landed burned.Professor Aldrich was looking at my thigh. His expression hadn't changed. The same flat composure he wore in every combat class. But his eyes were on the handprint and they were not flat. They were dark and focused and they stayed longer than they should have.My heart was beating too fast. I pulled the hem of my dress down and crossed my legs and didn't look at him again.Aldrich's POVPink. That was the first thing. The skin around the mark was pink, flushed from the heat of the fire, and the bruises sat in the center.
