Chapter 49: Aunt Elena

POV: Odette

I found out Elena Vance was coming to stay from Greta, who mentioned it the way she mentioned most things she didn't love, flat, brief, and with a look that told me there was more to the story than the sentence contained.

"Clara's aunt is arriving today," she said, setting a stack of fresh linens on the hallway table, the fabric still warm from the dryer. "Sofia's sister."

"I didn't know Sofia had a sister."

"Not many people bring her up." Greta straighten

  • My Ex Called Me Fat, Now His Father-in-Law Wants Me   The Threshold

Chapter 104: The ThresholdPOV: OdetteNeither of us moved for a long moment. The apartment had gone quiet around us, just the low hum of the city through the glass, the occasional soft tick of the lamp cooling somewhere behind him, and I stood there with his thumb still resting light against my temple, both of us caught in something neither of us had named out loud yet."Odette." My name came out rough, low, like it cost him something to say it."I know.""Do you?" His hand slid slower now, down along my jaw, careful, giving me every chance in the world to step back. "Because I need you to understand what tonight is, if you stay. I'm not going to pretend otherwise just to make it easier for either of us.""I'm not asking you to pretend anything."Something shifted in his eyes at that, dark and certain, and the air between us felt suddenly thinner, charged in a way that made my pulse climb despite the exhaustion still sitting heavy in my bones."Your father moved the wedding up tonigh

Chapter 103: Before She KnockedPOV: OdetteI didn't decide to go there. Not really. I just told the driver my parents had assigned me a destination I knew, and somewhere between the gate and the city I'd stopped pretending it was anywhere but Nikolai's.My own room felt wrong tonight. Not unsafe exactly, just hollow, the particular hollowness of a place that had never once belonged to me no matter how many years I'd slept in it. I kept thinking about the wedding date, three weeks instead of six, the number sitting in my chest like something swallowed wrong. I kept thinking about my father's face when he said terms, careful, controlled, like he already knew I wouldn't like whatever came next and had decided not to let me see it coming until morning.I didn't want to sit with any of that alone in a house that had already proven it would hand me over to whoever offered the better alliance. The elevator to his floor opened straight into a private hallway, marble underfoot, a single light

  • My Ex Called Me Fat, Now His Father-in-Law Wants Me   A Price She Isn't Told

Chapter 102: A Price She Isn't ToldPOV: OdetteThey were waiting for me in the study when I got home, my mother already in her robe, my father still dressed from whatever dinner he'd clearly abandoned the second the first call came through, both of them standing instead of sitting, which told me more than either of their faces did."Sit down," my father said."I'd rather stand.""I didn't ask what you'd rather." he said.I sat. My dress still had glass dust somewhere in the hem, and I felt it catch against the chair fabric as I did, a small, sharp reminder of everything that had happened in the last three hours."Do you have any idea," my mother said, her voice shaking in a way I'd rarely heard from her, "what it is like to receive a phone call from Victor Thorne informing you that your daughter's fiancé has just had his nose broken in front of half the city's press?""I wasn't the one who broke it.""You were the reason it happened." My father's voice came out flat, final, the parti

Chapter 101: What the Thornes Are Capable OfPOV: JulianThe doctor set my nose back into place with a crack that rang clean through my skull, and I didn't make a sound, mostly out of spite, because I'd already decided somewhere in that restaurant that I wasn't going to give Nikolai Valmont the satisfaction of knowing how much it hurt, even secondhand, even hours later."Keep the brace on for two weeks," the doctor said, taping gauze across the bridge of it, his gloved fingers careful, clinical. "No contact. No stress to the area.""Noted." I didn't look at him. I was looking at my own reflection in the dark window of the private medical suite my father kept on retainer for exactly this kind of discretion, the swelling already purpling under both eyes, dried blood still crusted faint along one nostril where the staff hadn't fully cleaned it.I looked like a man who'd lost. That was the part that sat wrong in my chest, worse than the actual pain. Not the broken bone. The fact that it h

Chapter 100: BelongsPOV: OdetteThe car door shut behind me with a heavy, final sound, rain drumming against the roof, and I turned on him the second I had enough breath back to form words."You ruined my date.""Your date was with a man who grips your chin hard enough to bruise it.""That's not the point." My voice came out shaking, too loud for the small space, adrenaline still roaring through me with nowhere left to go. "The point is you don't get to decide when I need rescuing. You don't get to drive a car through a restaurant and break a man's nose and then act like that solves anything.""It solved the part where his hand was on you.""For how long, Nikolai?" I twisted toward him, glass still caught somewhere in the folds of my dress, my pulse hammering hot and fast. "You didn't fix anything tonight. You just made my father furious, handed Julian a war he's apparently thrilled to have, and gave the entire city a headline. That's what you did."He didn't answer right away. His j

  • My Ex Called Me Fat, Now His Father-in-Law Wants Me   Not Yet

Chapter 99: Not YetPOV: OdetteI didn't see it coming. One second I was turned toward Julian, watching blood drip off his chin onto the tablecloth, and the next the floor tilted sideways as Nikolai's arm hooked around my waist and hauled me straight up over his shoulder."Nikolai..." The air punched out of me, my stomach slamming into the hard line of his shoulder, the room flipping upside down into glass and strobing light. "Put me down. Put me down.""Not yet."He was already walking, fast, glass crunching under his shoes with every stride, one hand clamped across the backs of my knees to keep me from sliding. Blood rushed to my head. My hair swung forward. I pushed up against his back with both palms, trying to get leverage enough to actually argue."People are filming this.""Let them.""You broke a man's nose. You drove a car into a restaurant. And now you're hauling me out like..." I didn't even have the word for it, too much adrenaline, too much fury, too much of something hum
