Asher’s POV

Everything is noise.

Gunfire. Yelling. Boots on wood.

But all I see is her.

Amelia.

Damien has her in his arms at the top of the stairs. Her head is hanging. Blood on her shirt. That bandage on her leg.

I don’t think. I move.

I’m up the stairs in three steps. I don’t give him a chance to talk.

“Give her to me,” I say. My voice doesn’t sound like mine.

Damien looks at me. Tired. Resigned. Like he’s been waiting for this.

He doesn’t fight me. He just lets her go.

  • My Ex Fiancé wants be back, but my contract husband owns me   Chapter Ninety Six

Amelia's POV The call ends and the room goes dead quiet.Asher sets the phone down slowly. Like if he moves too fast it’ll shatter.“Stunned” isn’t the right word. “Hollow” is closer. Mrs. Halder is dead. Mrs. Priya is missing. Two women. Two witnesses. Gone right after we talked to them.“Thank you, Esme,” Asher says into the dead phone. Then he looks at me. I can’t speak. Asher runs a hand through his hair. “Maybe that’s why Valerie and her husband is back.”I blink. “What?”“Valerie and Lester,” he says. “Damien’s parents. My sister and her husband.”Right. They were at the house. Smiling. Pretending everything was normal.Asher stands and starts pacing. “They’re here to tie up loose ends. Damien’s loose ends. If we don’t move fast, they’ll burn every piece of evidence. Every witness. Every paper trail.”My stomach twists. “You think they’re involved?”“I think they’ve been involved for all these years, since the very beginning,” he says. “And I think they’re scared we’re getti

  • My Ex Fiancé wants be back, but my contract husband owns me   Chapter Ninety Five

Amelia's POV Asher’s house smells like him. Clean laundry, coffee, and something warm I can’t name. I’m on the couch with a blanket over my legs, my gunshot wound properly bandaged and propped on a pillow. The TV is on low. There’s soup on the table that I didn’t ask for but is already cooling to the perfect temperature.Asher is doting. “Water?” he asks. “More soup? Do you want the window open? Closed? Do you want me to call Ethan? Do you want me to not call Ethan?”I laugh. “I’m okay. Really.”“You don’t have to be okay,” he says, sitting next to me. “You just have to be here.”And I am. For the first time in weeks I feel safe. I feel loved. His hand is always on me. On my shoulder. On my hand. Like he’s making sure I’m real. But underneath all of it, there’s this itch. In my head. Something wrong. I keep reaching for memories and coming up with fog. The island. The boat. The knife. Then nothing. Then Damien’s face. Then darkness.Asher notices. He always notices. “You’re q

Amelia's POVPain wakes me up first. Then the smell. Antiseptic. Flowers. Coffee. Then a hand in mine. Warm. Real. My eyes open slowly and the ceiling is white. Not wood paneling. Not the dark of that room. Hospital white. “Asher?”He’s there before I finish saying his name. “I’m here,” he says. His voice breaks. “I’m right here.”He leans down and kisses my forehead, my cheek, my hand. Like he can’t decide where to touch me first. “You’re okay,” he whispers. “You’re okay, Amelia. God, you’re okay.”I try to sit up and the pain in my leg reminds me. Gunshot. The dock. Blood. I suck in a breath. “The bullet—”“Gone,” Asher says quickly. “Killian took it out. Cleaned it. Stitched you. You’re going to be fine. You just need rest.”I look around. Machines beeping. IV in my arm. Blankets that actually feel clean. I’m back. I start crying. I don’t mean to. But the relief hits me all at once and I can’t stop. Asher is immediately there, pulling me into him as much as the bed allow

On Damien’s forearms. On his knuckles. Fresh. Like he’s been in a fight. Before I can process it, more shouting from downstairs. “Police! Hands up!”Arjun’s voice. A shot. I flinch but don’t look away from Amelia. “Got him!” someone yells. “Killian’s down!”I hear Arjun after. “Shoulder. Non-lethal. He’s cuffed.”They’re moving fast. Arresting everyone. Killian’s men. Two of them bleeding on the floor. Jordan is ther

Asher’s POVThe hospital smells like antiseptic and fear.I’ve been here before. Too many times in the last three days. Darcy is sitting up in bed when I walk in. She looks better. Color’s back in her face. The bruises are fading. But her eyes are still that same hollow, scared thing they’ve been since Killian’s men grabbed her outside my office.“Asher,” she says the second she sees me. “Any news?”I sit in the chair next to her bed. Jordan stays by the door. “We found something,” I say. “We’re close. Today, at most. We’re going to get her back today.”Darcy’s breath catches. “You promise?”“I promise,” I say. And I mean it. Even if I have to burn the whole island down to do it. “Don’t worry, okay? We’ve got people on it. We’ve got a plan.”She nods and reaches for my hand. Her fingers are cold. “Thank you. For not giving up on her.”“Never,” I say.We talk for ten more minutes. About nothing. About her mom. About the soup the nurses keep bringing her. I lie and tell her to rest.

Asher's POVThe car in the garage isn’t Ivy’s. It isn’t Damien’s either. It’s a black SUV. Tinted windows. Out of state plates. Parked crooked like someone pulled in fast and didn’t care. My stomach drops. “Did you see that?” Jordan asks, already out of the car and walking up the drive.“Yeah,” I say. My voice is flat. “Ivy said Damien just got home. Alone. With blood on his socks.”Jordan doesn’t answer. We’re both thinking the same thing. We hit the front door and I start knocking. Hard. “Ivy!” I yell. “Ivy, open up!”Nothing. I knock again. “Ivy! It’s Asher!”The door opens before the third knock. Ivy. She’s standing there in jeans and a sweater, hair down, makeup perfect. She’s smiling. That bright, hostess smile she uses for dinner parties. She looks fine. Relief hits me so hard my knees almost buckle. Then it’s gone, because nothing about this is fine.“Ivy,” I say. “Are you okay?”“Hey, Asher,” she says. Her voice is normal. Too normal. “What are you doing here?”“Are

But sitting at Graham Bro
