The relief should have brought me peace, but it didn’t. It was thin, frail, held together by nothing but Ryan’s assurance and a phone call I hadn’t even heard myself.

I slumped against the wall, my legs weak, hands still trembling. I couldn’t stop shaking. Couldn’t stop hearing Jonas’s voice in my head, over and over, like a sick loop stuck on repeat.

He was alive.

And he was scared.

Because of me.

“You’re going to make yourself sick,” Ryan said, voice cool, edged with something I couldn’t place. Not sympathy. Something harder. Maybe frustration.

I pushed myself off the wall, my vision swimming for a moment before it steadied. “You heard him, Ryan. He’s terrified. He’s my son. I have to do something.”

“I am doing something,” he snapped. “Keeping you from running straight into Bruce’s trap.”

“Trap or not, I have to try!” My voice rose, heat climbing up my throat, my chest. “You don’t understand. You’re not a parent. You don’t know what it’s like to hear your child begging for help and

I had planned it all out.Wake up early. Slip out unnoticed. Get what I needed and get the hell back before anyone realized I was gone.Simple.Except I hadn’t accounted for Ryan.I should have known.I should have felt it.. the weight of his watchful gaze, the silent calculation in the way he studied me.But I had been too focused on not falling apart. And now, standing in the dimly lit back hallway, with Isla hurriedly unlocking the door for me, I felt him before I even saw him.A quiet shift in the air.A flicker of movement.Then.. “Going somewhere?”I froze.Slowly, I turned my head.. my pulse pounding, my stomach twisting.. until I saw him.Ryan stood just a few feet away, leaning casually against the wall, a cigarette balanced between his fingers. The faint orange glow of the ember barely lit his face, but his eyes? His eyes cut through the darkness.Unbothered. Observant.Knowing.I swallowed, my mind scrambling for something.. anything.. to say."Er.. I was just…"Ryan inhale

“Now, I’m confused,” Sophie muttered, pacing the room, her phone pressed tightly to her ear. “You were the one behind my early release? Why didn’t you tell me?”Mrs. Janet’s voice came through the line, steady and familiar. “Would you have listened if I had?”Sophie stopped mid-step, exhaling sharply.Fair point. Her entire body was still thrumming with the leftover adrenaline of the past few hours.. the attack, Jonas’s call, Ryan’s infuriating mix of cold logic and reluctant concern. Now, this? She pressed a hand to her forehead. “You had that kind of influence this whole time?”“I had enough,” Mrs. Janet replied. “And I used it where it mattered.”Sophie let out a breathless laugh, shaking her head. “God… I don’t even know what to say.”A pause. Then, softer, “You needed time, Sophie. You needed to become who you are now.”Sophie stopped pacing, her back stiffening. She swallowed hard. “You think I’ve changed that much?”“You wouldn’t be standing where you are if you hadn’t.”The

The terror in my head had only just begun to settle by the time we reached the mansion.Ryan killed the engine and sat in silence for a moment. His knuckles flexed against the wheel, his breathing even, his expression unreadable.I wasn’t sure why I was staring at him, but I couldn’t look away. Maybe because I was still trying to make sense of what had just happened. My hands were shaking. My clothes were torn, my arm still throbbed where the knife had cut me, and yet, the only thing I could think about was the man Ryan had killed. He turned his head, eyes sweeping over me.He swallowed, but there was no regret in his expression. No hesitation.Of course not. This was who he was. A killer.I tried to steady my voice, tried to force out the words I knew I was supposed to say.. "I'm fine."But what came out instead was.. "You didn’t have to kill him."Ryan didn’t blink. “He was a problem. Now, he’s not.”A problem. Not a man. Not a person.Just an obstacle he had eliminated.I forced m

My head felt heavier than it had ever been.I had to get out.I’d been sitting in that damn house for too long, my thoughts eating me alive, looping over the same sick realization.. Selena wasn’t just sleeping with Bruce. She was working with him.I needed air. I needed noise. I needed to step away before I lost my mind. But sneaking out wasn’t as easy as it should’ve been. It’s been two days since the casino incident, and Ryan has been... watchful. Subtle, but watchful. He didn’t act like it, didn’t say anything outright, but I knew. The way James conveniently popped up whenever I moved from one part of the house to another. The way Isla, the quiet little nanny, always seemed to be around. And Ryan? The other day, I’d casually mentioned stepping out for a drink, and his response had been nothing short of an interrogation.“Where?”“With who?”“Why?”I’d shut up after that. I didn’t want anything to ruin the fragile understanding we were trying to build. I needed his help, and antagon

Selena stared at the photo on her phone, her fingers tightening around the sleek device.Bitch.Sophie’s face stared back at her.. sharp, defiant, alive.Selena’s jaw clenched as irritation rippled through her. Just looking at her made her skin itch. You were supposed to be dead. She swiped the screen, flipping to another picture.. this one grainy, taken from a distance. Elena Maxwell. Same sharp features. Same piercing gaze. It didn’t take a genius to see the resemblance.Selena had spent years trying to shake off Sophie’s shadow.Back in college, Sophie had been the golden girl.. effortless, charming, always one step ahead. And everyone loved her. Professors. Friends. Bruce. And Selena?Always second place. Always the one left wanting what she couldn’t have. She let out a slow breath, tilting her head as she studied the image.“You just don’t know when to stay buried, do you?” she muttered. Her nails tapped rhythmically against the desk. This wasn’t just about Bruce anymore.Sophie
