EMILY

I woke up with zero desire to get out of bed. It was nearly impossible to keep sleeping in this town long after sunrise—the birds and the heat woke everyone up. Still, I stayed in bed for another hour after waking.

My dad’s bedroom door was still closed, and I was going to give him the time he needed until he was ready to finally talk.

Then I faced the kitchen: *“You weren’t here!”* His words swirled in my head, hitting me like a slap in the face. *“Don’t pretend you care!”* Facing the truth head-on was harder than I’d thought, but before I could sink into dark, depressive thoughts, the doorbell rang.

Janice wouldn’t knock—she had a key and had promised not to tell anyone I was here. So who the hell could it be? I stood frozen at the door, waiting for another knock, and it came, louder this time.

“Emily Carvalho, I know you’re in there, and I’m not leaving without getting a good look at that face!” Bianca’s voice filled my ears.

I flung the door open and saw her. Her brown hair and those beautiful Almeida blue eyes—I wanted to break down right then and there, but she knew me too well. She pulled me into her arms before I could dissolve into tears in front of her.

“I need to get out of here!” I mumbled, still clinging to her neck. That was all it took for her to drag me out of the house and into her pickup truck.

Bianca drove without asking questions, and we didn’t speak during the ride. I was grateful for that—I needed the fresh air hitting my face and some silence, since my thoughts were screaming relentlessly.

It took longer than I remembered to reach one of the town’s diners. Rosa made some of the best cakes, and I was dying to eat something since last night. The idea of facing everyone still terrified me, but somehow, Bianca’s presence by my side gave me strength.

“Okay, let’s head to the back, sweetie,” she said, opening the door and nudging me toward one of the hidden tables. “You need to eat, and a lot.” My forced smile came before she even left the table to place the order. “So, missy, when did you get to town?”

“Yesterday,” I murmured, keeping my head down to avoid the stares from the people around us. “And I regretted it the moment I set foot in the house.”

“That fast, huh? I heard your dad’s been having issues, but I didn’t realize it was this bad.” I knew she was being sincere—she was one of the few people I could still trust not to disappoint me.

“I want to take him away. Staying in that house isn’t doing him any good.”

“Or you,” she said before she could stop herself. “Is that what you didn’t want to tell me last week when we talked on the phone? Because if it is, you should know by now that nothing stays secret in this town for long.”

“Things aren’t going as planned. I was supposed to be out of here by yesterday. Who told you I was back?” Even though I had my suspicions, I needed to know.

“Marcos,” she said, quickly stuffing her mouth with bread to dodge the subject. So that was it—he’d gone to Bi to tell her I was back. “He wanted to know what you’re doing in town. Honestly, everyone does.” Before I could respond, pancakes were placed in front of us.

“So it’s true—you’re back in town,” the waitress, who I recognized as Sara, a classmate of my brother’s, said. She had a black eye, and I wanted to ask what happened and if she was okay, but I held back. Old small-town habits always crept back in. “Staying long?”

“I hope not,” I murmured, loud enough for only the two of them to hear, but everyone’s eyes were on us. She just nodded and walked away. “What happened to her?”

Sara was one of the prettiest girls in town—long blonde hair, light green eyes, but what stood out most was how sweet and friendly she could be.

“Long story, but you know David? Her husband? He’s turned out to be a real creep over the years.” I was shocked—they were, without a doubt, the town’s perfect couple, but it seemed I wasn’t the only one with big problems around here. “Her kid’s a sweetheart and definitely going to be a pro soccer player. You’ve got to see him. Speaking of seeing, let’s go to the club tonight. You need to meet Joshua before he leaves.”

“I didn’t know he was on leave. So, missy, what are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be with your boyfriend?”

“He may be in the army and live in another country, but I’ve definitely seen him more these past years than I’ve seen you,” she grumbled, her knack for making a scolding sound sweet shining through. “No use—you’re not escaping me that easily.”

We had breakfast amid laughter, the first I’d let out since deciding to come here. It was hard to be around Bianca and not be infected by her lightness.

Janice was right about the town being different, but it was the people who had changed. Five years is enough time for big changes.

“Thanks for breakfast, and I’ll see you around—maybe—while I’m still in town,” I said, hopping out of the truck to avoid her asking me to go out tonight.

“No ‘see you around’—I’ll be here at seven, and don’t bother saying no because you’re going!” she ordered, already pulling away in her truck, but she stopped and stuck her head out the window. “Hey, Emy, go easy on your dad. He just needs time.”

I’d wait, however long it took. I’d already lost my mom—I wasn’t going to lose him too.

Emily - YEARS AGOI was stupidly happy. In a few weeks, I’d be moving to the neighboring town to start college. Even though it meant spending less time with Bete, Bianca, and Marcos, I was thrilled about the idea of being more independent and starting the next chapter of my life.Marcos would make weekend trips to see me until he could move there permanently. It was Bianca’s last year, so he still needed to stay close and keep an eye on her, since their drunk father was useless. The following year, she’d likely get a scholarship to any college she wanted—she was a true genius—and then he’d be free to move in with me.The more time we spent planning our future, the more real it felt.“We should go to that concert in the next town,” Bete burst into my room, her phone in hand, typing frantically. “Done. I’ve convinced Carlos. Now you just need to convince Marcos.”She and Carlos hadn’t been apart since graduation. In fact, they’d been hooking up for a while, always sneaking off to hidden

Emily“They won’t give up until things seem sorted between us,” Marcos began, trying to start a conversation. I ignored his voice, or at least tried to, squeezing my eyes shut as if that would make him disappear. “I know you don’t want to talk, and I get it, I really do, but if you could at least listen.”I clenched my fists until my nails dug into my skin, then took a deep breath and finally looked at him. His clear, expressive eyes made me want to cry and demand why he’d deceived me, but all I did was hold his gaze.“I remember the last time I saw you before our fight. That night, I dropped you off at home after we left the cabin. When I got to my place, my nightmare began.” He interlaced his fingers and stared at them, his usual reaction when he felt uneasy, but this Marcos in front of me was a different person. “I caught my dad grabbing Bianca. He was too drunk to know what he was doing, calling her by my mom’s name while she was on the floor, and he tried to tear her clothes off.

Emily - YEARS AGOThe year had finally ended. I was finishing high school, and next year I’d be heading to college in the neighboring town. I wouldn’t be able to see Marcos every day, but in a few months, he’d move there, and we’d live together.Of course, my mom nearly lost it. I was too young for this, she said. I needed to rethink everything, live my life before deciding to build one with him. But what could I do when the love of my life came along faster than hers did?Today, I didn’t want to think about that. I just wanted to have fun and give myself to Marcos. I couldn’t take it anymore after months of heated make-outs, kisses, and getting off through our clothes. I needed more.“Are you sure about this, sweetheart?” my mom asked when she saw me packing an extra change of clothes in my bag.The plan was to go to Bete’s house after graduation, but of course, she must’ve figured it out.“I’m sure. I know it’s time, Mom!” I said, with the certainty I felt in every part of my body.

EmilyWe arrived quickly at the town’s newest club, thanks to São Fernando’s nearly nonexistent traffic. I parked in the employee spot Bete used and noticed a shiny new pickup parked nearby. He was already here, I deduced. I hurried out before Bete, needing to give him a heads-up before she spilled everything.Bete followed slowly behind, and soon we heard the heavy thud of cowboy boots against the concrete, running toward us.“Hey, you,” I muttered when I saw him, but his eyes were already locked on the beauty behind me. “Down here, it’s me you haven’t seen in five years!” I said louder to get his attention.“God, you look awful,” he said, finally looking at me, but he wasn’t surprised by my injuries. Someone — Marcos or Bianca — had already spilled the beans.“Watch what you do if you don’t want the same to happen to you,” I muttered, focusing on Bete.“You’re making me nervous. Hi,” he said as Bete finally caught up. “What’s going on?” He stumbled over his words, showing how nervou

EmilyMy head was throbbing, almost like a hangover, but the pain only worsened when I tried to get up. My whole body ached, but I could hear voices coming from the kitchen.“Bi?” I called out, forcing myself to cross the short hallway to the kitchen. The whispers I’d heard when I got up stopped the moment I spoke.“Good morning, Emy. Feeling better?” Bi appeared at the doorway, catching me off guard. She sounded upbeat, but her face couldn’t hide her concern. What was going on here… It wasn’t hard to figure out. I only had to look past her to see Marcos at the stove, staring at me. What the hell was this? “Sorry, I didn’t think you’d wake up so early, and he…”“Enough of that.” He cut off Bianca’s explanations, marching toward me. “God, look at you…” Marcos murmured, standing close, then touching my face. I was frozen. I should’ve punched him or cursed him out, but I just stood there, confused, as he held my face gently. “I’m talking to him today, and you’re not going back there. You

  • My Ex Wants Me Back   Chapter 17

Emily - YEARS AGOIt had been a few days since things had calmed down a bit for Marcos. The end of the year was approaching, and with it, my vacation. I wanted to spend as much time as possible with him before I had to move to the neighboring town for college. Of course, my parents weren’t thrilled with this decision—they always thought I’d follow Fernando’s path and go to São Paulo—but they understood that Marcos was too important to me to just leave behind. I took a deep breath in the car before jumping out and grabbing the snacks I’d made with my mom.“He’s going to love the surprise,” she said, encouraging me.I walked hesitantly toward the entrance of Mr. Silva’s auto shop, where Marcos worked. I’d already spotted him from a distance, his pants hanging low on his hips, his tank top and arms smeared with grease, his head buried under the hood of a car.“Good afternoon, young lady!” Silva greeted me as soon as Mom drove off, drawing everyone’s attention.“Good morning, Mr. Silva.
