The time is 10:12pm.
BREAKING NEWS:“Xavier King involved in a fatal midnight crash. The victim is in critical condition, the source of the woman remains unidentified.”
Mira stared at her phone, her heart thudding vigorously , her thumb trembling as she scrolled through the screen reflecting her wide eyes . This is the 1st news ever, of Xavier with a strange woman.
The words burned through every gossip blog and news site. Her lips twitched into a bitter smirk.
In the photo, Xavier was seen in a car smashed against the guardrail, glass scattering. He crouched in the rain, holding a woman’s head against his chest, but her photo was unidentified.
“Xavier… what have you done?” Mira broke down in tears.
Three years she’d waited for Xavier. Three years she had pretended she was part of his world when she was only an afterthought and now she was staring at the proof of Xavier in the arms of another WOMAN.
She knew that look in his eyes when she saw him in the photograph, desperate and longing for the woman, the one he never gave her.
The tremor inside her turned into a bitter smirk as she paced around barefooted, restless, and muttering under her breath. She waited for his call but he never called. Well, he doesn't know what is waiting for him at home either.
The rain started splashing heavily again outside. It was now past 11pm. Mira was inside fighting her agony, when the sound of tires screeched into the driveway outside. Xavier just drove in, exhausted and weary.
He opened the door and stepped in,soaked to the bone, rain dripping from his collar, his eyes hollow, his tie half pulled loose. His face, pale and tired, streaked with exhaustion.
He shut the door, leaned against it, exhaling for a second, he didn't even notice Mira who was sitting at the couch nor did he see her at first until she spoke.
“You made the news.”
Xavier froze, turning slowly.
“Mira?” His voice came out hoarse. “What are you doing here?”
“Waiting for you. Well, it seems I’m the only one who does now.” she said.
“You shouldn’t have come to Mira.”
“Oh please, cut me some slacks. Or you shouldn’t have lied?” Mira cuts in.
“What?” Xavier frowned.
She lifted her phone, thrusting the image in front of him, showing himself kneeling beside a woman on the street, wet, and face twisted with fear.
“It was an accident,” Xavier said softly. “I hit her. I couldn’t just leave her there.”
“Then you stayed with her all night? Holding her hand and whispering her name?” Her arms folded, nails biting into her skin.
“You stayed with her all night, didn’t you?”
“Mira”
“Oh please don’t Mira me,” she snapped. “You never even hold my hand.”
He rubbed his forehead. “It wasn’t like that Mira. She was unconscious, I didn’t even know her.”
“But now you do.” Her voice cracked, anger bleeding through her as she stepped closer. “Don't you?”
Xavier’s jaw flexed.
“Stop twisting it. There’s nothing between us. There never was.” he snapped.
“Nothing Xavier?” she asked wide-eyed.
“Yes, Nothing,” he said again, slower this time. “We were never in a relationship. You know that.”
“I gave up everything for you, Xavier.”
“I let people laugh at me for chasing a man who won’t claim me. And now you go ahead and play a hero for some woman? A stranger for that matter?”
“You’re twisting this,Mira, it's not what you think”
“No,” her voice raised and trembled. “You twist everything Xavier until I look crazy, just because I wanted to stay.”
“Mira” You stayed because you wanted to. Not because I promised anything.”
Mira’s shoulders dropped.
Her eyes glistened. The rain thundered harder outside with silence thickening between them, full of things unsaid.
He sighed. “Look Mira, just go home. Please.”
Her laughter rang sharp and brittle.
“Home? You mean that place you visit when you’re bored of everyone else or done licking their ass?”
He clenched his jaw. “You’re making this worse than it is.”
“Worse?” she hissed. “You haven’t seen worse. But you will.”
She grabbed her coat, her eyes wild with fury and deeper hurt.
“One day you’ll remember tonight, and wish you’d kept me.”
She swore under her breath and slammed the door behind her. The echo leaves a disturbing sound.
Xavier stood there, his pulse hammering.
He rubbed his face in weakness and for the first time in years, he felt the weight of the night pressing deeper.
**********
Xavier didn’t sleep. By the next morning, around 8am, he was already at Silvercrest Medical hospital, the weight in his chest heavier than any hangover.
The antiseptic smell filled the hospital wars.
He walked fast, boots clicking and ignoring the glances of the nurses on duty.
He came into Nichole’s room . The machines blinked lazily, as she lay in bed, pale and motionless.
The machine beside her blinked, counting every fragile second. Dr. Vincent was already there checking her temperature with his stethoscope.
“How is she?” he asked.
The doctor looked up, shocked by his presence. “That’s what we’re trying to figure out.”
“What do you mean? She’s breathing, isn’t she?” Xavier asked with a worried look.
“She’s breathing,” the doctor said quietly, “but not responding. Her brain scans are erratic. One minute they show deep activeness, the next minute…flat.”
“Flat?”
“Her scans show no physical injury or trauma.
But her body reacts like it’s shutting down.
She is not brain-dead. She is not alive, either.”
“That’s not possible, doctor.”
Xavier’s throat went dry. “That doesn’t even make sense.”
“It doesn’t to us, too.” the doctor admitted.
“Doctor,” he called. “Please tell me she’s improving.”
The doctor's brow furrowed.
“She’s… stable, but we can’t explain her condition for now.”
“What the hell does that mean?” Xavier snapped back with a curious and angry expression.

Before the doctor could respond, suddenly, a nurse hurried in, flipping through a document, Her face drained and troubled. “Doctor, we can't find her file.”
“What?” Xavier roared. “It’s not on record. I checked the archive, the system... nothing.” The doctor frowned, snatching the documents from her and flipping it through by himself again.
“What? No file found.”
“You logged her yourself doctor,” Xavier said, stepping closer.
“Yes I did. She was right here last night.”
“Then where the hell is her data?” Xavier fired back.
“Her file is missing, It’s like she was never admitted.” The nurse responded triggering much fury inside Xavier.
He backed against the wall, dragging his hands through his hair. His chest ached as the air thinned.
He turned toward Nichole, the faint rise and fall of her chest was the only proof she was alive
He turned to the medical staff.
“Dr. Vincent, you’re telling me a living patient doesn’t exist in your system anymore?”
Neither of them answered.
The monitor suddenly spiked… then steadied.
The doctor reached for her wrist, checking her pulse again, while the nurse was still rifling the pages of the document.
Everybody was shocked at the new development.
Xavier moved closer to Nichole who was laying breathless, brushing out the strands of her hair.
He leaned closer.
“Nichole, I promise. If anyone…anyone had a hand in this” His voice dropped. “I’ll burn down this hospital to the ground before I let them finish what they've started.”
Beatrice’s PovRaymond stood near the doorway with his duffel bag resting against his leg, and the sight of it made my heart feel off.I had known something was wrong for weeks. He had been coming home late, keeping his phone screen turned down on the table, and dodging every conversation about our business accounts. I thought he was just stressed about work, but seeing that bag packed by the front door made everything click into place."I am leaving you, Beatrice," Raymond said, his voice quiet as he adjusted the collar of his suit jacket.I stepped into his path, blocking the narrow gap toward the hallway. "What do you mean by that? You cannot just walk out on me after everything we built together.""I don't care about the business anymore," Raymond replied, looking down at his shoes instead of my face.I recalled how distant he had been over dinner last night, staring right through me while I talked about our quarterly goals. The missing bank transfers, the sudden password changes
Xavier found the file at three in the morning and I woke up to the sound of his chair scraping back, hard, like he'd stood up too fast."Nicole," he said. "Come look at this."I sat next to him, still half asleep, and read the screen over his shoulder. Then we saw a name and a photo of a man with tired eyes, a lab coat, research papers which was dated years back, buried under fake company names."He was a scientist," Xavier said. "My father was brilliant, apparently, he worked in neuroscience before he vanished off every public record.""Vanished how?""That's the thing." Xavier's hand was shaking on the mouse. "He didn't disappear but the syndicate took him… or even bought him. I can't tell which yet.""What was he working on?"Xavier scrolled down, and his face went pale. "It was something called the project threadline and I don't know what it does yet, but the funding numbers are insane. Whatever it is, the syndicate wanted it badly enough to build an entire cover operation aroun
The van rolled up behind us the second we stepped out of the car as the doors slammed against the pavement and our boots landed hard on the concrete as I grabbed Mira by the arm and pulled her behind a dumpster before the first shot even fired."Get down!" I said as we dropped to the ground and the bullets tore into the metal above our heads loudly and close. My ears rang from the noise and my hands shook, but I kept them steady around my gun"This was a setup," Mira said, breathing hard beside me."You think?" I fired back at the nearest shadow moving toward us through the smoke and he dropped instantly as Mira fired next to me,with two shots and another man went down between the cars. We moved together without a word, crouching low and weaving between the vehicles, using the chaos around us to gain distance as we continued."There's an alley," she said, pointing past the corner. "They are fifty feet away from us.""Go."We ran through the dark as shots cracked behind us, hitting
Pov: NicholeI lay awake in the pitch-dark bedroom with my eyes wide open. Xavier was curled in front of me, his warm back pressed flush against my chest under the thin wool blanket. Neither of us had slept a wink since the sun went down.Through the silence, the clock on the far wall made a soft, rhythmic ticking sound that filled the cold space between us. It was nearly two in the morning when Xavier finally turned his head toward the wall and spoke into the shadows."My whole name is a lie," he said, his voice barely rising above a whisper.I pulled him closer, wrapping my arm tightly around his ribs. "Your name is still yours, Xavier.""No, it isn't," he muttered, shaking his head against the pillow. "Everything I thought I knew about my father is gone. The papers inside were all fake and my birth record was fabricated, and I don't even know who actually bought my first crib under that roof.""You are still the exact same person," I said, leaning over him. "I watched you during
The ConfrontationXavier didn't call ahead. He just drove straight to his mother's house, with the ledger that clutched in his hand like it might disappear if he loosened his grip. I went with him and obviously, I wasn't going to let him walk into that alone. She opened the door in her silk robe, with a perfect hair even at this hour, and smiled like nothing was wrong."Xavier, sweetheart, what a surprise."Then Xavier , ignored all her glances and held up the ledger. "Explain this."Her smile didn't move, but her eyes did with just a flicker. "Explain what?""Mother, don't give me that shit." His voice was low and shaking. "Don't stand there and pretend like you don't know about this."She stepped back and let us in, her hands folding tight in front of her. When we came in, the living room felt too clean and perfect, like a stage set for a life that wasn't real."Sit down," she said as she offered a hand to the direction of the seat. "I don't want to sit." Xavier snapped."Xavier
Pov: NicholeXavier called me before I even had my coat off."Nichole, you need to sit down." He said."I'm sitting." I replied, taking one left corner of the dining as he sat down together with me and started the conversation."The name from the ledger, the one the enforcer gave us before he died. I need it to come to your notice that we ran it against Thorne's list.""And?""It's Senator Callahan."I actually laughed, not because it was funny, but because it was too much. "The guy who does the ribbon cuttings? The one with the foundation for foster kids?”"That's the one.""That's insane, Xavier.""I know." He responded,as his voice cracked a little. "Thorne went quiet on the phone for a full minute and I've never heard him go quiet like that."I could hear Xavier's shallow breathing, like he'd been running."They put a man like that in plain sight," he said. "And he is someone everyone loves, who no one would ever suspect.""That's the whole point," I replied as Xavier didn't answe
(Ryan & Xavier)“Hey, bro!”Ryan entered the hospital, his voice cracked through the sterile silence of the waiting room, loud enough to make a nurse glare at him, but he didn't care, he grinned anyway, with a duffel bag slung over one of his shoulders barging into the quiet hospital.“Man, you loo
(Nichole's Pov)I woke up with a gasp, disoriented and aching. My head still throbbed hard as I found out I was lying on the floor, this time, on a cold pavement, in front of my house. I still noticed my body was still in blood stains.Where am I? I was confused.I wobbled to my feet. Looking arou

(Xavier's Pov)“Get me the car keys!”Xavier's calm but commanding tone got the chief guard into tremendous fear of obedience, as he fumbled towards his boss, rushing with his car keys. Xavier took the keys from him. His tone wasn’t raised, it didn't have to be as authority dripped from it, the k
