ログイン‘Ma please you can't go in” The secretary dragged.
Raymond didn’t look up when the office door swung open. He remained busy at his annoying files that have kept him rigid since morning, his expression clearly looks pissed off by network issues from his system.
He was still necked deep into his work when a young lady walked in.
Her heels clicking distinctly against the marble floor, with her navy blue blazer exuding all poise and sophistication. Her hair tied up in a sleeked bun, her nude lipstick matching her make-up. Each step she made was more like an assertion that makes her impossible to be ignored. She shut the door softly behind her, ignoring the secretary’s feeble attempt to stop her from barging in.
“Hello, Mr Raymond”.
Raymond lifted his gaze. A flash of annoyance crossed his face, curious of what a strange lady with such boldness would be looking for in his office. “Who are you please?” he asked curiously.
Resting her laps in front of his desk, unbothered and unbiased, never minding the professional disdain, she responded. “I am Mira, a daughter to Mayor Eves. I am the betrothed wife to a man your wife swore not to leave”.
“Excuse me, My wife? What are you talking about?”
“Oh please spare me those crap Mr Raymond. Why pretend as if you don't know what I'm talking about?”
“What?” Raymond asked curiously.
“Take a look at this”. She flipped a file dismissively towards him with a flick of her hand and the other one resting lightly on her chin radiating just dominance.
“Maybe this will explain better before the media does.” She said tilting her head and studying him with the confidence of someone who already knew the outcome. Raymond’s eyes narrowed widely at the file wondering the hidden danger inside it.
Immediately he opened the folder…. He was shocked at what he saw. A printed hospital form with his estranged wife’s name written boldly on it…NICOLE VANCE. Stating clearly of her accident the previous day with Xavier.
“What is Nichole doing with another man?” He thought.
Raymond’s heart immediately kicked hard against his ribs, driven by emotions he couldn’t explain.
“Young Lady, Where did you get this?” he asked angrily.
“Does it matter?” Mira replied coldly. “Your ex-wife has been busy.”
He looked up sharply. “You watch your tone.”
“No, Raymond,” Mira said, leaning forward on his desk, as she spoke. “You’re the one who needs to watch her.”
He slammed the folder shut at her face, waving out the thoughts battling in his head. “Spare me all these, Nichole can't do such a thing.” He snapped.
“Oh why are you suddenly trusting her now? You think she wouldn't .” Mira cuts in. “She had a one-night stand with my boyfriend, and now, conveniently ends up in his car, in a disguise of being crushed under a truck which is making waves in all blogs right now.”You think this is a joke? Don’t act like it doesn’t look suspicious.”
Raymond stared at her, stunned and speechless at her words. The idea of Nichole moving on so quickly with another man is still unbelievable .
Trying to yank it off again, he said.“Look, that’s impossible. Nichole wouldn’t degrade herself like that.” he said again, but his expression obviously betrayed him.
“Oh! degrade YOU, you mean?” Mira tilted her head, biting her lips and expecting an outburst from him. “Or are you pretending it doesn't affect you?”
Raymond clenched his fists.
Mira smiled faintly with a cruel, satisfying smirk knowing fully well she had hit the soft spot.
She stepped closer, bending slightly and her perfume drifting over his nostrils, she said.
“Listen Raymond, I’m going to give you this warning,” her voice stern. “If Nichole tries this again, if she ever steps into my path with my man. I will make sure I finish what the truck failed to do permanently.”
Raymond rose abruptly. “Don’t threaten her. She is NOT your problem.”
“Oh, she already is,” Mira said, twisting her neck in a bragging way. “And let me tell you, once people find out she was playing house with another man while still legally bound to you by fresh paperwork, she’ll be your problem too.”
Raymond's nostrils flared in anger.
Before he could speak another word. Mira rose up, picked her berkin bags and walked towards the door, pausing just long enough to twist the knife deeper, she turned.
“Raymond, You told me she didn’t matter to you anymore,” Mira added casually. “But the expression on your face tells me she still does.”
Raymond stood rigid, his hands braced on the desk, breathing hard through his nose as she left without dismissal. The door clicked shut behind her as silence swallowed the office. Raymond has never felt this type of humiliation, the insult, the idea of Nichole with someone else, it made his ego burn.
Nichole….His Nichole.
Despite everything, the thought of another man touching her, ignited something savage in his chest. He shouldn't be thinking about this, yet,he didn't understand why. Beneath his fury lay a truth he dared not admit: a flicker of the old warmth he believed was long dead, a craving he resented and the love he killed but never truly mourned, suddenly found their way creeping back.
“Fuuuckkk! Never! Not under my watch Nichole. I hate you but I can't watch another man take you”. He swore.
He crushed the folder in his fist, shoving it aside and snapping one hand on his head.
Raymond kept battling with his fury, but he couldn’t shake the bitter truth Mira had unintentionally revealed. He wasn’t only fighting his pride, he was fighting something he had sworn he no longer felt.
A past love refusing to die and masking itself as revenge.
If Nichole was alive…If she was being reckless…If she thought she could shame him and get away with it. Then he would surely deal with her, punish, bend and erase her completely.
POV: NicholeIt has been two days in the woods. The satellite phone on the kitchen counter buzzed three times against the wood. Xavier picked it up on the fourth ring. He did not say hello but he just listened.I watched him from the cot. His face did not change color, but the skin around his eyes tightened. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his black titanium debit card, and dropped it onto the table."When?" Xavier asked the caller as he paused. "All of them? Even the offshore holding account?"He ended the call without a goodbye and then looked at the card on the table."My personal accounts are locked," Xavier said. "The bank cited an emergency audit regarding corporate fund mismanagement and Mira’s father sits on the compliance committee."A cold sweat broke out along my hairline. Xavier had given up his salary when he resigned, but this was different. This was total extraction. He had zero dollars and the gasoline in his car’s tank and the cash in his wallet, eighty-four do
POV: NicholeAround 9pm in the night. The sound of heavy tires on gravel broke the morning silence as I sat up immediately in the small cot, my muscles stiff. Then through the reinforced window slats, two black luxury cars sat idling in the dirt.‘Who could that be?’ I thought. The heavy iron front door opened as Xavier’s mother walked in first. She wore a black wool coat with a sable collar. Her face was pale but rigid, showing no signs of the collapse from the ballroom and behind her lined four men in identical charcoal suits, each carrying a leather briefcase.“What is she doing here?”Her cold eyes scanned the bare concrete walls, passed over Elena sitting on the stool, and stopped on me as her lips thinned into a straight line. Then she turned her gaze to Xavier, who stood by the cold wood stove."You look ridiculous in this place, son," she said and her voice did not shake. "The board meeting is at noon today and the press is outside the townhouse. You will get in the car with
POV: NicholeThe gravel crunched under the tires as the sedan crawled to a stop. Xavier off the headlights and the entire forest swallowed us in absolute darkness. We got out of the car. The air smelled of damp earth and pine needles. Ahead sat a low, concrete structure with a flat roof and reinforced steel window shutters. It did not look like a house but resembles a bunker.Xavier pushed open the heavy iron door and inside, the air was cold and smelled of dust. He walked straight to the kitchen counter where a row of black electronics sat. He picked up his personal phone, corporate phone, and the car’s GPS transponder. He took a small metal tool from his pocket, popped the SIM cards out, and snapped them in half with his thumbs. He dropped the pieces into a glass of water on the counter. Then he turned to us."We are off the grid," Xavier said flatly. "Mira's father has connections with the state police but they cannot track the signals here."Elena sank into an old leather armc
POV: NicholeXavier’s hand clamped around my wrist, his fingers were cold, but his grip was like iron. He pulled me away from the wall and my heels skidded on a wet patch of spilled champagne. But he didn't slow down. He dragged me straight through the cluster of guests.I looked down as we passed his mother who lay lifeless on her side, her grey silk gown soaked in red wine from the broken glass and a man in a tuxedo was loosening her collar. Two feet away, Mira was screaming into her phone, her mascara running in dark tracks down her cheeks. She looked up, saw us, and pointed a red-nailed finger."Stop them!" she shrieked at us.Xavier ignored her as he pushed past Lord Sterling, who was his uncle, shoulder-charging the older man out of the way. Elena ran hard behind us, her hand holding up the hem of her heavy dress so she wouldn't trip.We burst through the heavy glass exit doors into the night air. Instantly, the dark was gone as white light exploded in my eyes. Ten paparazzi o
POV: NicholeThe four security guards in black suits dragged me and Elena. Their shoes banged on the polished marble. I pressed my back against the ballroom wall as the gold leaf on the molding dug into my shoulder blades."Stop and leave her alone." Xavier’s voice cut through the room as the guards stopped instantly. Two of them dropped their hands to their sides as Xavier approached us and looked straight at me who was helplessly held by the guards. He did not look at the three hundred guests in the room as his breath came fast and furious. His mouth stayed slightly open as his blood boiled in fury and an angry line formed between his eyebrows. The silence in the boardroom lasted for five seconds and after that people started whispering. The sound grew from a low hum into a loud rattle as Mrs. Vance Xavier's mother shifted her diamond necklace Xavier's uncle stepped back into the shadow of a marble pillar.Across the floor, Mira stood next to the tiered cake, her fingers curled int
POV: Nichole"Nichole?"Xavier called as his eyes widened in shock seeing me present in his engagement party. The whole hall went silent and every glass stopped moving. All conversation died and over two hundred people turned and stared at the door where I was standing and nobody made a sound.Xavier had a velvet box in his hand and his knee was still coming off the floor. He looked at me like he was seeing something he had buried weeks ago suddenly standing in front of him and breathing.Elena placed her hand against my back as we walked in.My heels hit the floor and the people moved to the sides, clearing the way for me, but I kept my eyes on Xavier and kept walking. Then his mother stepped in front of me."What are you doing here, you creep?" She spoke with so much venom in her words. "How did you get in here?""I need to talk to Xavier Ma'am."I said."No, you need to turn around and walk back out the way you came.""Please, just let me….""I said get out of here! Let you what?"
