LOGINHe wound down the glass on the passenger side, the one closest to where Alicia stood.
“Hello, Alicia!” he called, smiling as he leaned a little toward her.
But Alicia was too weighed down to notice. Her thoughts dragged her inward. Her hands gripped her bag straps, and she looked past him. Whoever had stopped in front of her with a car was not worth a glance, let alone an answer.
When Dylan realized she was not even going to look his way, he pushed open the door, stepped out, and shut it behind him. His footsteps carried him closer to where she stood.
Something made Alicia turn once without thinking, then she turned again as her mind caught the face. Her eyes widened as she recognized him.
“Dylan!” The name slipped out before she could stop it.
“It’s me, Alicia,” Dylan said softly, stretching out his hands toward her for a hug.
They fell into a warm embrace, though Alicia pulled back almost as quickly as she had leaned in.
“Aly, you still don’t like me after all this time, do you?” Dylan asked, searching her face.
Alicia forced a smile, one that did not reach her eyes.
“Well well… what is this beautiful lady doing out here all alone with her bags and luggage? Are you stranded, Aly? I could help you out,” Dylan said, grinning widely. He tried to pick up one of her boxes.
“Dylan, I’m fine, please,” Alicia responded weakly, tugging at his hands on the box.
“Hey, Alicia, listen. I know you are not interested in me becoming your lover, and you have made it clear to me so many times. But please allow me to help you out of here. I cannot leave you stranded in this place.”
He looked around, examining the area carefully. “This place seems so lonely and dangerous too, for a very beautiful lady like you to be out here all by yourself.”
Alicia scoffed, looking away from him.
“Please, just let me help you,” Dylan pressed, his tone softer now.
This time when he reached for the boxes again, Alicia did not resist. He took both from her hands and put them in the boot, leaving her with only her two smaller hand bags.
Dylan had always liked Alicia, maybe even loved her in his own way. From the first time he met her, she stood out to him. She was calm, not the kind of girl who laughed at every silly joke or ran after attention. And that was strange for him, because he was used to girls who fell easily for his smile and his playful words. But Alicia was different, and maybe that was why he could not get her out of his heart.
Dylan was known to be a flirty guy. He liked being around women, he liked teasing them, and he liked the attention he got from them. But with Alicia it was not just about fun. Around her he wanted to be taken seriously. He wanted her to see the real side of him, not just the easygoing man everyone thought he was.
The problem was that Alicia never saw him as her type of man. Dylan was a handsome man no doubt, but Alicia wanted someone more. Someone confident and strong, but not so loud. A man who was reserved, steady, and a little serious. Dylan was sweet, yes, but to her he was still that playful guy who loved too much attention.
Still, his feelings for her did not change. He kept hoping that one day she would see that with her, he was not pretending.
He opened the car door for her, and she slid in. Then he returned to his seat and started the engine.
They had gotten to the highway now. Dylan turned toward Alicia after a long, awkward moment of silence.
“So… where have you been all these years, Aly?” He asked, steering them toward his street.
Alicia thought hard about the answer she would give to Dylan, but her mind went blank.
“Are you okay, Alicia? You look so worried.” His eyes stayed on the road as he spoke.
“I’m… I’m fine…” she stammered, shifting uncomfortably on her seat.
“You don’t look okay,” Dylan said gently, still not looking at her. Inside, he wondered if he was the reason for her unease.
There was a moment of silence again. It lasted until they were almost at the street of Dylan’s residence, less than a kilometer away.
“You can stay at my place, Alicia. I don’t want you stuck,” he said with a small smile.
“No, please, Dylan, thank you. You have done enough for me already.”
“Alicia, come on. You cannot keep refusing to accept my help, even in the smallest way.”
“Dylan, I would rather find somewhere else to stay than be a burden to you.” Alicia said these words as if she meant them, but in truth she would not risk spending a night in Dylan’s house. She did not want to get entangled with him in any way.
Dylan suspected as much, but he didn’t know how to push further. “Do you have any friends around here you could stay with tonight?” he asked as he pulled the car to the side of the road.
The question triggered a memory that brought pain to her. She thought of her husband and what transpired between them, and how she did not even want to stay with Emily, her friend, because she did not want to be anywhere close to that vicinity. She raised her hand to wipe away the tears that were beginning to gather in her eyes. It was then that Dylan noticed the ring on her finger.
“Oh!” he muttered, barely above a whisper. At that moment he understood why she was really holding back from him.
Alicia adjusted in her seat, fighting not to break down in tears in front of Dylan. She covered her face with both hands.
“I have a friend who rents houses around this vicinity. Let me call him to know if there is any available house close by.” He said.
Alicia spoke softly, “Thank you so much, Dylan,” her voice filled with gratitude. She dropped her hands and lowered her gaze to her bags, not wanting him to see her tears.
Dylan pulled out his phone, scrolling through his contacts. Just then, a young woman stormed toward the car, yelling his name.
Nathan’s POVI stepped out of Marie’s office with something I hadn’t felt in a while.Hope.It didn’t feel solid yet, more like something fragile I wasn’t sure I should trust, but it was there. The plan she suggested kept replaying in my head as I walked out. It made sense. It gave me a way to get close to Alicia again without forcing anything on her.Maybe… just maybe, what we had wasn’t completely gone.Outside, Mark was already waiting by the car. The moment he saw me, he opened the door.I got in without saying anything, still lost in my thoughts. The door shut behind me and a few seconds later, the engine came alive as he pulled out.For a while, neither of us spoke. I leaned back slightly, staring ahead, but my mind was somewhere else entirely. Then Mark finally broke the silence.“The private investigator has something from the search you instructed I should look into.”That pulled me back immediately.“What did he find?”Mark glanced at me through the mirror before focusing ba
Alicia let out a sudden laugh. “Ha ha ha ha ha…” But it wasn’t warm. It was hollow, mocking laughter. The sound faded just as quickly as it came, and her face changed immediately.“Nathan, the audacity for you to show up again in my office,” she said, her brows furrowing.Nathan stood there, watching her carefully. “Alicia… can we at least sit down and talk? Please.”“Talk?” she scoffed, tilting her head slightly. “With who? Me?”She gave a short, unbelieving laugh again.“Please…”“Leave now.” She directed her hand toward the door.“What?” Nathan blinked slightly.“I said leave now,” Alicia snapped, her voice rising. “Or I’ll call security on you. Who even let you into my office in the first place?”“Nathan stepped forward slightly. “Please Alic—”“I’m seeing someone else,” she cut in quickly, rolling her eyes as if the words meant nothing. “So you can’t have me back anymore.”Nathan gave a small, dry scoff. “Alicia… you know that’s not true. Please, let’s just talk this through.”Al
Vanessa studied her for a brief moment, as if weighing whether to continue, then she nodded. “Alright,” she said quietly. “But just know… this isn’t small.”The room grew still, then Vanessa took a breath. “I found out that Vin is a part of the Garfield family, Thompson and Sarian Garfield from El Vallejo. Although he is not actually a biological member, he was adopted into it, when his only surviving parent, Sir Romano Moretti, was assasinated in cold blood a very long time ago.”Alicia’s brows drew together slightly. “Thompson and Sarian Garfield are Andrea's parents.”“The Garfield family?” Emily repeated.Vanessa nodded. “Yes. And that family is connected to Adeline’s extended family. It’s all tied together. Also Sir Romano was a very close friend to Sir Thompson Garfield hence that's why he adopted Vin.”Alicia leaned back slowly, her mind already trying to connect the dots.“But that’s not even the main part,” Vanessa continued.Alicia’s fingers tightened slightly on her lap. “T
As he reached the table Alicia's expression instantly hardened. Every trace of surprise vanished, replaced by something sharper. Anger.“Nathan?”His name left her lips again like an accusation. Her chest rose and fell quickly as the realization settled in.“I can’t believe Miss Marie would set me up like this…” she muttered under her breath, her voice tight with frustration.Without waiting for him to say a word, Alicia grabbed her bag aggressively from the table. The chair scraped loudly against the floor as she pushed it back. Then she turned and stormed out of the restaurant, her steps fast and furious. She didn’t look back.Nathan stood there for a moment, completely caught off guard. Confusion flickered across his face before frustration quickly followed. He exhaled sharply and sank into the chair Alicia had just left behind.“What the hell…” he muttered under his breath. He rubbed his face slowly, dragging his palm down as if trying to process what had just happened. The restau
Alicia arrived at her workplace early that morning. The office was already awake, filled with the quiet rhythm of keyboards clicking and phones ringing softly in the background. She settled into her chair and dropped her bag onto the desk.As she reached inside to pull out her notebook, her fingers brushed against something stiff. She paused. The wedding invitation.Vin’s invitation card.Alicia slowly pulled it out and stared at it for a moment. The gold letters printed across the surface glimmered under the white office lights.Vin Romano MorettiandMelvinaHer brows slowly drew together.Something about it felt strange again. She leaned back in her chair and opened her laptop.“If Melvina is marrying Vin… then what exactly is her connection with Adeline?” she murmured quietly to herself. Her fingers began moving across the keyboard.A few seconds later, Adeline’s social profile appeared on the screen.Alicia leaned closer. The page was almost empty.Just a few pictures. One photo s
Nathan's POVI sat in the lawyer's office, the documents my ex-wife was entitled to sliding across the table like a silent threat. I barely glanced at them. "She hasn’t asked for anything," I said, my voice even. The lawyer adjusted his glasses, a hint of curiosity in his eyes. "That is not unusual.""It is for her," I replied, my fingers tapping a slow rhythm on the table. He leaned back, a small smile playing on his lips. "What exactly are you worried about, Mr Nathan?"I stopped tapping. "Alicia is not the kind of person who lets things go quietly. If she is ignoring the properties, then she is planning something else."The lawyer’s smile grew, a placating gesture. "You are overthinking this. Whatever she plans should not affect you in any way."Maybe. But the feeling in my gut refused to settle. I stood up, buttoned my jacket. "Send the documents to my office," I said."Of course."Outside, Mark was waiting by the car, opening the door as I approached. "Office?" he asked."Yes."T
Emily sat up at the edge of the bed, teardrops forming in her eyes as she stared at the empty space beside her. Vin was gone. He could not even wait till she woke up before leaving. Her phone lay beside her, silent, like it had nothing to say to her pain. For a moment, she remembered the first time
Nathan’s POVHer words froze the room.“I know something,” Celine said again, her voice steady though her eyes betrayed a weight she carried.Andrea’s sobs faltered. My mother turned sharply toward Celine, her expression hardening. “What are you talking about?” she asked quickly, almost defensively
Alicia watched them both, the tension in the room pressing down and she furrowed her brows before asking, "Is there a problem between the two of you that I don’t know about?"Emily’s eyes flickered for a moment before she looked away with a faint uneasy smile. "No, nothing really. Everything is fin
Nathan reached the office that morning, the weight of last night pressing hard against his chest. Every step felt heavier than the last. His secretary appeared quickly, holding a stack of files in her hands.“Good morning, Sir.”Nathan waved at her without lifting his eyes from the desk.“Sir, some
