Bella:

Before I could take another step toward the closet, Luke caught my wrist.

In one swift movement, he pulled me back against his chest. His arms wrapped around me securely, holding me close.

Once upon a time, this embrace had been my safe place.

Whenever life became overwhelming, all it took was Luke holding me like this for everything to feel right again.

Tonight, his embrace felt like a prison and every part of me screamed to get away from him.

"Leave me alone!" I snapped, my voice breaking through the silence of the room.

Instead, his arms tightened around me.

I could feel the steady rhythm of his heartbeat against my back, and it only made me feel sicker.

How could he hold me like this after holding another woman? How could these same hands touch me without hesitation after they had been all over Serena?

Luke rested his chin lightly against my head, completely oblivious to the storm raging inside me.

If only he knew that his mistress already sent me videos of his doings.

"I'm sorry, Bella," he murmured softly. "You know I'd never put anything before us."

A bitter smile threatened to form on my lips.

Really?

"I love you so much." He said.

Only minutes ago, I had watched those same lips kissing Serena.

Now those lips were whispering promises of love to me.

I closed my eyes tightly. The video replayed in my mind all over again.

How could he claim to love me while betraying me?How could love exist beside deception? How could someone promise forever to one woman while giving pieces of himself to another?

Love me? I almost laughed.

He loves me enough to kiss Serena. He love me enough to lie to my face. He loves me enough to spend our anniversary with another woman before coming home to me with flowers.

What a cruel definition of love.

I bit down hard on my lower lip, refusing to let another sob escape.

Slowly, Luke loosened his embrace.

Relief washed over me, but it didn't last long.

His hand remained on my waist.

His thumb stroked my side absentmindedly, the way it always did whenever he wanted my attention.

I resisted the urge to shove his hand away. If I push him off, and shout at him, he might stop paying my mother's hospital bills.

I can't let that happen until I'm financially stable.

He smiled at me, completely unaware of the disgust building inside me.

Or maybe he noticed something was wrong but assumed it was nothing serious.

Perhaps he believed all it would take was another apology, another bouquet of flowers, another romantic surprise, and everything would return to normal.

Luke leaned forward slightly, intending to kiss me. I turned my face away before his lips could touch mine.

“Stop it, Luke,” I said in a low tone. "Leave me alone."

His lips brushed nothing but air and silence settled between us.

When I finally looked at him, surprise flashed briefly across his face.

It disappeared almost as quickly as it came.

"I guess you're still angry," he said with a small chuckle. "Let me make it up to you."

His hand slipped from my waist, though his eyes never left mine. He searched my face carefully, waiting for the familiar smile I always gave him.

That was when I noticed his scent.

Luke always wore the same expensive cologne. I knew it so well that I could recognize it anywhere. But tonight, there was something else mixed with it.

A soft floral perfume that wasn't mine. I didn't wear perfume today. The realization struck me so suddenly that my breathing faltered.

Someone else's fragrance clung to his clothes.

What more evidence do I need? He was really with her.

And yet he stood here moments ago, looked straight into my eyes, and calmly told me he has been busy at work.

The lie had rolled off his tongue so effortlessly.

How many times had he lied to me before tonight? How many times had Serena's perfume followed him home while I welcomed him with a smile and never questioned a thing?

The thought made me feel physically ill.

Luke reached for my hand again.

His fingers intertwined with mine naturally, as though nothing had changed and gently guided me toward the bedroom door.

For a moment, I considered pulling away, demanding answers, throwing my phone in his face and forcing him to explain every second of that video.

Instead, I remained silent because I suddenly felt exhausted. As we reached the doorway, I stopped abruptly.

My breath caught in my throat.

The living room has been transformed—Rose petals covered the floor, forming a path through the room.

Candles flickered softly on every surface, filling the space with a warm golden glow.

Our wedding song played quietly in the background.

The entire room looked exactly like something I'd once dreamed of, my chest tightened.

If I hadn't seen that video...If tonight had unfolded the way I'd expected...I would've cried happily.

This would've been perfect.

Luke had remembered every tiny detail I loved.

The flowers. The candles. The music. Everything I love.

Luke turned to face me, his eyes searched mine carefully.

"Bella." He called softly.

I blinked slowly, realizing I've been staring blankly without saying anything.

He stepped closer. "Are you okay? Don't you like it? Tell me what you want, talk to me my love."

A hollow laugh echoed inside my mind. Was I okay? How could he even ask me that?

How could the man who had betrayed me so completely still stand in front of me pretending to be the caring husband I'd fallen in love with?

How could he kiss Serena, then come home, decorate our house, buy me flowers, hold me in his arms, and tell me I was the best wife in the world?

The contradiction was so absurd it almost made me question my own sanity.

I looked at the concern in his eyes and the tenderness in his expression.

And all I could think was...How can you still look at me like you love me... when you were in another woman's arms just hours ago? That was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever witnessed.

Deep in my heart, I hate him.

  • MY EX-HUSBAND WATCHED ME FALL IN LOVE   36

(Bella’s POV)By the time the business gala finally came to an end, my cheeks ached from smiling. The kind of deep, muscle-deep ache that comes from holding an expression that no longer belongs to you. I had lost count of how many businessmen, celebrities, and investors had approached us throughout the night, offering congratulations on our “engagement.” Every few minutes another pair of eyes would light up with excitement, another hand would reach for a photograph, another glass would be raised in a toast to our supposed future. The words “beautiful couple” and “perfect match” floated around us like perfume—sweet, expensive, and completely false. It was exhausting in a way that went beyond tired feet or sore cheeks. It was the exhaustion of performing a life that wasn’t mine. The moment we stepped out of the lobby into the cooler night air, I kicked off my heels with a quiet, almost desperate sigh of relief. The concrete felt blessedly solid under my bare feet.“Oh, thank God.”

  • MY EX-HUSBAND WATCHED ME FALL IN LOVE   35

(Luke’s POV)I wished I could tell her that I had wanted divorce for longer than I was willing to admit. That no amount of time or effort or shared history would ever make me stop loving the woman who left. That we could never work, not really, no matter how many years we stacked on top of the original crack. But the words stayed locked behind my teeth.Part of me still didn’t know how to let go of Serena. She had been my constant when everything else collapsed. She had been kind when I was broken. And another, colder part of me whispered the practical fear I hated myself for even thinking: that she might outsmart me in a courtroom, that she could take half of everything I had built, that the life I had carefully constructed could be carved up and handed over. And deeper than that fear was the simple, human reluctance to hurt her any more than I already was.So I stood there in the small bathroom with the fluorescent light buzzing softly overhead, her tears soaking into my shirt,

  • MY EX-HUSBAND WATCHED ME FALL IN LOVE   34

(Luke’s POV)I couldn’t take it anymore. The air in the living room had grown thick, heavy with the weight of everything left unsaid, everything I had been swallowing for five years. Every breath felt like it scraped against the raw edges inside my chest. I stood up so abruptly the chair scraped hard against the floor. My hands were already trembling. I walked straight to the washroom without looking at anyone, without answering the concerned glance I could feel on my back. The door shut behind me with a soft click that somehow sounded final.I braced both hands on the cold porcelain of the sink and stared at my own reflection. The man looking back at me looked wrecked—eyes red-rimmed, jaw locked so tight it ached, a single tear already tracking down one cheek before I could stop it. I hated that tear. I hated how easily it came whenever the thought of her slipped past the walls I had spent half a decade building.Just as the door shut behind me, it opened again. Serena stepped

(Luke’s POV)“Of course I'll marry you,” Bella said, her voice trembling with emotion as she smiled down at Aiden. The words echoed through the ballroom. For a brief second everything around me went silent. The applause that erupted after her answer sounded distant, almost as if I were underwater. Guests rose from their seats, cheering and congratulating them while cameras flashed relentlessly around the newly engaged couple.I couldn’t hear any of it. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t even blink. My eyes remained fixed on Bella as Aiden gently slipped the diamond ring onto her finger—the same finger that had once worn my wedding ring.A painful lump formed in my throat. It has been five years since she walked out of my life, yet seeing another man place a ring on her finger hurt just as much as the day I watched her leave. Maybe even more. Because this time it felt final.I had always believed there would be another chance. Another conversation. Another opportunity to tell her how

(Bella's POV)When the song reached its climax, Aiden suddenly dipped me backward without warning.A gasp swept through the ballroom.Camera flashes exploded around us.“Aiden!” I whispered through my laughter, clinging to his shoulder. “You absolute maniac. Warn a girl next time!”He slowly pulled me upright again, looking far too pleased with himself. “What? You looked amazing. The photographers needed content. I provided content. You’re welcome, my love.”“You planned that.” I shake my head at him.“I absolutely did. I’ve been waiting all night for the perfect moment to make you look like a movie heroine and myself like a slightly overconfident supporting character.”“Show-off.” I scoffed at him.“You looked amazing. Say it again and I’ll buy you dessert later.” he whispered and blew me a kiss.I shook my head, trying not to laugh anymore. “You’re the worst best friend in the history of best friends.”“And yet still the only one currently dipping you in public. • MY EX-HUSBAND WATCHED ME FALL IN LOVE   31

(Bella’s POV)The soft melody of a live orchestra drifted through the grand ballroom, replacing the quiet chatter of business discussions. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead while executives, investors, celebrities, and influential families mingled with glasses of champagne in their hands. The atmosphere became elegant, sophisticated, and filled with laughter until the master of ceremonies stepped onto the stage.“Ladies and gentlemen,” he announced with a bright smile, "thank you all for joining us today. Before we continue with the rest of the day, we'd like to invite every couple onto the dance floor for our traditional gala dance.”Applause echoed across the room.I instinctively looked at Aiden. He was already looking at me.No, I shake my head at him, I don't even feel like dancing. A mischievous smile spread across his handsome face before he stood from his chair and stretched his hand toward me with an exaggerated flourish."My beautiful girlfriend," he said, executing

I stood there for a long second, staring at Bella, her words hung between us heavily, twisting the knife of betrayal even deeper into my chest. I sat on the edge of the bed, carefully helping Serena rub ointment on her twisted ankle. Guilt gnawed at me—I should have been home with my wife right now, but Serena’s situation felt too urgent to ignore. I’d always worried about her, and honestly, she’d been there for me through so much. I’d

Before I could even reach the closet, his hand closed around mine and he pulled me back into his arms, holding me with a firmness that once felt like safety but now felt like restraint. Luke’s POV (A few days later) I pulled up to Serena’s mansion again after another long day, my mansion feeling more like a trap than a home these days.
