Chapter 2

Author: Melton
At noon, Kalev went to the pack council chamber, and Freya found an excuse to leave. Randy then brought a buyer to my house to go over the handover checklist.

This luxury villa in the heart of the pack territory was one that Mom had prepared for me many years ago.

The new buyer was a very straightforward she-wolf named Debbie Barker. She went through the details, inspected the house, and seemed very pleased with it.

"This house has been kept in excellent condition, Ms. Whiteclaw! Are you also taking all the furniture with you?"

I shook my head.

"No, I'm not. I'm leaving everything to you other than a few of my personal belongings. We'll finalize the handover the day after tomorrow."

Shortly after seeing Debbie off, Kalev called. His voice was tight with suppressed anger.

"Ariel. Did you let an outsider into the house?"

I didn't reply.

He sneered coldly and said, "Freya passed by the house and smelled a foreign scent coming from the inside. How dare you bring in someone with an unknown background without telling me about it?"

He spoke with an air of righteous concern, but I could tell that he was more worried about whether or not Freya had been upset by the unfamiliar scent.

I just replied calmly, "It was a repairman. He came in to check the plumbing."

Kalev was clearly skeptical, but he didn't press the issue. He softened his tone and said, "Fine. I'll come home early tonight and take you to that new restaurant. Freya said that you hadn't been eating much lately and told me to spend more time with you."

He said it so naturally as though Freya was the lady of the house instead of me, that she would have to remind him to keep me company when I was supposed to be his mate in the first place.

I hung up on him.

At 6:00 pm, Kalev arrived home right on time. For the first time ever, he actually brought a bouquet of moonflowers for me.

He stuffed the bouquet into my arms and swept his gaze over the empty entryway cabinet.

"Where are the things you used to keep here?" he asked.

I used to keep some of our couple items, couple jewelry, and couple photos there, but I'd already gotten rid of them all. I didn't even bother looking up as I said, "They were just there collecting dust, and I grew sick of them, so I tossed them."

Kalev frowned, but surprisingly, he didn't lose his temper. Instead, he wrapped his arms around me from behind, enveloping me in his scent, his tone softening in a rare display of gentleness.

"Are you still mad about what happened at our mating ceremony? Freya is an orphan. She's sensitive to being lonely. But you're the future Luna of the pack. Can't you just be a little more understanding with her?"

I didn't pull away.

Five years ago, Kalev had also held me in his arms like this, swearing to the Moon Goddess that he would protect me and cherish me with his life for as long as he lived.

But now, he was asking me to be more understanding and tolerant toward the person who had indirectly caused Mom's death.

I looked him straight in the eyes and asked, "Are you coming to visit Mom tomorrow?"

His arms around me stiffened for a bit. Then, he quickly let me go.

"Not tomorrow. I have a meeting with the pack Elders. How about the day after instead? I'll definitely make time to go with you then."

I didn't call his bluff. I'd already seen his schedule, and there was absolutely no official meeting with the pack Elders the next day. The only thing on his agenda was accompanying Freya to pick out some gowns.

Instead, I just nodded and said, "It's fine. Forget about it."

Kalev thought that I was being sensible for once and planted a kiss on my forehead.

"That's a good she-wolf. Once Freya settles down, we'll hold the mating ceremony again, and then we'll think about having a pup afterward. You won't have time to let your mind wander off anymore once you have something to focus on."

I stared at his familiar face and suddenly found it very foreign to me. He might as well have been a stranger.

He went back to the study that night, and I dragged my black suitcase out of the walk-in closet, packing up the few remaining clothing items that I owned.

I neatly arranged all of the fine jewelry that he'd given to me over the course of the five years together on the dressing table, even taking off the necklace that signified my status as the future Luna, tucking it away at the very bottom of the jewelry box.

I was just waiting for the day after tomorrow, when it would all finally come to an end.

Silence befell the wooden house. Only the crackling of the burning firewood in the fireplace could be heard.Kalev's face was completely ashen. He dropped heavily to his knees, hitting the wooden floor with a loud thud."Ariel… I didn't know… I really didn't know…"He clutched his hair in anguish, digging his fingernails deep into his scalp until they drew blood."I was a jerk… I was a bastard… I was completely blinded by Freya's lies…"As he spoke, he slapped himself hard across the face twice. The sharp sound of the slaps echoed throughout the house, and his face quickly began swelling."You can hit me, curse at me, or even stab me with a dagger, but please, don't just abandon me and cast me aside, Ariel! I'm begging you to please give me one more chance! I'll even step down as Alpha as long as you'll come back to me! I don't want anything else anymore!"He was behaving like a stray dog who'd just lost his territory, desperately clinging to a final shred of hope.I looked dow

It was evening by the time Kalev arrived at the marketplace in Icewind Glen. He followed the extremely faint scent that belonged to me and stopped in front of a wooden house selling magic protective gear. The door was slightly ajar, and he could see warm orange flames coming from the fireplace inside. He stood outside the door, breathing rapidly while his chest heaved violently. He had been rehearsing the reunion scene in his head countless times in the past six months. He had planned to get down on his knees and beg me for my forgiveness, hand over the most valuable piece of land in the pack, admit his mistakes, repent, and renew his oath to the Moon Goddess with his life as collateral. But the moment he pushed the door open, all the words he planned to say caught in his throat. There was a warm fireplace inside the house, and I was sitting in a rocking chair, polishing a moonstone.Kalev opened his mouth, but before he could call my name, a tall wolf came out of the back room.

Six months later, Kalev was still drinking strong liquor in the council chamber day and night.Over the past six months, he'd been desperately sending out his warriors to track my scent, but the Neutral Zone was a chaotic melting pot where thousands of beings from various races came and went every day. It was simply impossible to track my scent down. After leaving the pack, I had transferred to another vehicle heading for the northern snowfields, effectively vanishing without a trace.Since Kalev couldn't find me, he sought to numb himself through ceaseless hunting and territorial expansion. The pack warriors were exhausted, and the Elders complained about it every day, but Kalev didn't care. That afternoon, Piper pushed open the heavy doors of the council chamber and said, "Alpha, the guard units sent word asking you to go over. It's about Freya."Kalev frowned.Half a year ago, he had stripped Freya of her privileges in the Central Territory and revoked all protection he had gr

Debbie was still pressing herself flat against the door as she resisted Kalev's Alpha aura, not daring to breathe too heavily. Meanwhile, Kalev gripped the necklace tightly before staggering out of the door. His mind kept replaying Debbie's words—that I had sold her the house yesterday, and I had left the pack early this morning. He pulled out his phone at once and called his Beta, Piper Thorne. His voice trembled violently as he barked, "Go and investigate Ariel's whereabouts! Find out where she's heading to at once!"15 minutes later, Piper called back with an answer."Alpha Kalev, Ms. Whiteclaw boarded a vehicle that was heading north. However, she wiped away all traces of her scent trail as soon as she left the pack."But since her mother's already passed away, and she has no other living relatives, we're unable to track her through the bloodline link. Also… she voluntarily removed her name from the pack's registry."Kalev leaned against the cold stone wall, gasping loudly f

The next morning, I stood in the center of the villa's living room, holding the only suitcase I owned. The house where I'd lived for the past five years felt so empty now that even the sound of my breathing echoed off the walls. My personal belongings and Mom's keepsakes had been shipped out the night before. As for Kalev's things, I didn't touch a single one of them. I left them all exactly where they were, just like a pile of worthless trash. Two heavy brass keys lay in the center of the coffee table. Resting right on top of them was the necklace that signified the status of Luna of the pack.Since our mating ceremony had never been completed, I was thus spared the tedious process of severing the bond with him.At 8:00 am sharp, Randy arrived at the door with Debbie. After verifying all of the details, Debbie signed the property transfer deed and smiled at me."I wish you all the best in your new home, Ms. Whiteclaw. May the Moon Goddess watch over you always."I returned her

The next morning, I went to see the witch, Megan Wysteria. When Mom passed away, a corner of the moonstone amulet that she'd been wearing had been knocked off, and Megan had helped me repair it. The silver repair lines crossed through the blue stone like a scar that would never heal.I put the amulet away in a velvet box and returned home. The moment I opened the door, a familiar scent of pheromones hit me in the face at once. Freya was seated on the couch in the living room, scrolling on her phone.I held my coat in one hand and the velvet box in the other. After walking in through the door, I turned sideways and closed it with my elbow, temporarily placing the velvet box on the low table at the entrance. I was planning to take my coat and put it on the coat rack in the room. But in the few seconds it took me to take off my coat and turn back around, I saw that the velvet box had already been opened, and Freya was brazenly wearing Mom's moonstone amulet around her neck.My mind
