Kalev Talbot scoffed when he heard me refuse.

"Are you seriously going to throw a tantrum right now, Ariel Whiteclaw?" he asked impatiently, unfastening the ornate clasp on his collar. Then, he tossed the black cloak onto the couch. It still carried the chill of the outside air along with the cloying scent of Freya Redstone's pheromones.

I sat at the other end of the couch, suppressing my wolf's restlessness and agitation as I spoke in a low voice, "I'm not throwing a tantrum."

Kalev stopped unbuttoning his shirt, and his gaze darkened as he turned to glare at me.

"Are you threatening to break up with me just because I interrupted the mating ceremony?" he said darkly. "You know that Freya lost her parents when she was young, and her wolf is extremely unstable because of that.

"Her heat made her wolf lose control. If I hadn't rushed over to soothe her with my pheromones, she would have suffered a mental breakdown. I was only helping her out of a sense of brotherly duty."

His gaze swept over the obsidian urn on the mantelpiece. The name carved into its surface made him flinch for a second, but he quickly dismissed it as a mere ploy on my part to force him to back down.

"Is it really necessary to drag your mother's illness into this and even lie about her death just to garner sympathy from me?"

I remained silent and just looked at the urn on the mantelpiece.

Just yesterday, he had stood before the Moon Altar with me, but Freya suddenly sent him a text message. He immediately stopped our mating ceremony halfway through without a moment's hesitation, even though the ceremony was already on the verge of completion.

I had grabbed his arm, practically begging him, "Kalev, it's our mating ceremony today. The whole pack is watching."

Yet, he had pried off my fingers, one by one, and said icily, "We can hold the ceremony again anytime, but Freya needs to be soothed right now."

Then, he left for Freya's home without even a backward glance at me or Mom, who had slid to the floor in a dead faint.

And now, he was standing right before me, looking down his nose as he accused me of being immature and inconsiderate.

However, I didn't argue back with teary eyes like I used to. I simply nodded and said, "Fine."

Kalev's furrowed brow finally relaxed. He thought that he had won again.

He walked up to me and reached out to stroke my hair like he used to, but I turned my head to the side, coldly dodging his touch.

His hand froze midair. Moments later, he sighed.

"Alright, alright. Stop acting like this. Tomorrow I'll make time to go with you to visit your mother and apologize, then we can put this whole thing behind us."

With that, he walked into the bathroom.

I remained sitting in the living room, slowly packing the old letters and personal jewelry that Mom had left behind.

I didn't need Kalev anymore.

…

Later that morning, I had just finished wiping down the urn when the front door swung open, and Freya walked in behind Kalev with a box of fresh pastries from the bakery in town.

She was wearing a white dress with a sweet smile on her face.

"Hey, Ari," she said. "Sorry for borrowing Kai for the day yesterday."

Before she was done speaking, her gaze fell upon the fireplace mantel. A split second later, she let out a piercing scream and recoiled sharply into Kalev's arms.

"I'm sorry! I just… I didn't know that you kept such a terrifying thing in the house…"

Kalev immediately wrapped his arms around her and released soothing pheromones to calm her down. But the moment he looked at me, his eyes were as cold as frost.

"Ariel! What the hell do you think you're doing?" he yelled at me sharply. "Why do you still have that urn sitting out in the living room? Don't you know that Freya is easily startled? You did this on purpose to scare her, didn't you?"

He stormed over to the mantelpiece, grabbed the urn angrily, and shoved it into the cabinet underneath.

"Put this damn thing away and stop it with all this morbid nonsense!"

The urn struck the wooden cabinet shelves with a dull thud, and my heart sank into a frozen abyss along with it.

I walked over and calmly cradled the urn back in my arms.

"Fine. I'll take it back to the bedroom."

I didn't raise my voice at him. It remained flat, as if I were simply speaking to a stranger.

Kalev was taken aback for a bit. He probably never thought that I would be so compliant.

I clutched the urn in my arms and brought it into the master bedroom with me. Freya's saccharinely sweet voice then drifted in from behind me.

"Is Ari still mad at me, Kai?"

Kalev replied to her in an indulgent tone. "Don't mind her. She's just trying to salvage her bruised ego. She'll eventually get over it once she cools down."

I closed the door behind me, shutting out the sounds from outside. Then, I took out my phone and sent a text message to the real estate agent, Randy Greene.

"Have the buyer settle the full payment in one lump sum. We'll sign the property transfer deed tomorrow as planned."

Silence befell the wooden house. Only the crackling of the burning firewood in the fireplace could be heard.Kalev's face was completely ashen. He dropped heavily to his knees, hitting the wooden floor with a loud thud."Ariel… I didn't know… I really didn't know…"He clutched his hair in anguish, digging his fingernails deep into his scalp until they drew blood."I was a jerk… I was a bastard… I was completely blinded by Freya's lies…"As he spoke, he slapped himself hard across the face twice. The sharp sound of the slaps echoed throughout the house, and his face quickly began swelling."You can hit me, curse at me, or even stab me with a dagger, but please, don't just abandon me and cast me aside, Ariel! I'm begging you to please give me one more chance! I'll even step down as Alpha as long as you'll come back to me! I don't want anything else anymore!"He was behaving like a stray dog who'd just lost his territory, desperately clinging to a final shred of hope.I looked dow

It was evening by the time Kalev arrived at the marketplace in Icewind Glen. He followed the extremely faint scent that belonged to me and stopped in front of a wooden house selling magic protective gear. The door was slightly ajar, and he could see warm orange flames coming from the fireplace inside. He stood outside the door, breathing rapidly while his chest heaved violently. He had been rehearsing the reunion scene in his head countless times in the past six months. He had planned to get down on his knees and beg me for my forgiveness, hand over the most valuable piece of land in the pack, admit his mistakes, repent, and renew his oath to the Moon Goddess with his life as collateral. But the moment he pushed the door open, all the words he planned to say caught in his throat. There was a warm fireplace inside the house, and I was sitting in a rocking chair, polishing a moonstone.Kalev opened his mouth, but before he could call my name, a tall wolf came out of the back room.

Six months later, Kalev was still drinking strong liquor in the council chamber day and night.Over the past six months, he'd been desperately sending out his warriors to track my scent, but the Neutral Zone was a chaotic melting pot where thousands of beings from various races came and went every day. It was simply impossible to track my scent down. After leaving the pack, I had transferred to another vehicle heading for the northern snowfields, effectively vanishing without a trace.Since Kalev couldn't find me, he sought to numb himself through ceaseless hunting and territorial expansion. The pack warriors were exhausted, and the Elders complained about it every day, but Kalev didn't care. That afternoon, Piper pushed open the heavy doors of the council chamber and said, "Alpha, the guard units sent word asking you to go over. It's about Freya."Kalev frowned.Half a year ago, he had stripped Freya of her privileges in the Central Territory and revoked all protection he had gr

Debbie was still pressing herself flat against the door as she resisted Kalev's Alpha aura, not daring to breathe too heavily. Meanwhile, Kalev gripped the necklace tightly before staggering out of the door. His mind kept replaying Debbie's words—that I had sold her the house yesterday, and I had left the pack early this morning. He pulled out his phone at once and called his Beta, Piper Thorne. His voice trembled violently as he barked, "Go and investigate Ariel's whereabouts! Find out where she's heading to at once!"15 minutes later, Piper called back with an answer."Alpha Kalev, Ms. Whiteclaw boarded a vehicle that was heading north. However, she wiped away all traces of her scent trail as soon as she left the pack."But since her mother's already passed away, and she has no other living relatives, we're unable to track her through the bloodline link. Also… she voluntarily removed her name from the pack's registry."Kalev leaned against the cold stone wall, gasping loudly f

The next morning, I stood in the center of the villa's living room, holding the only suitcase I owned. The house where I'd lived for the past five years felt so empty now that even the sound of my breathing echoed off the walls. My personal belongings and Mom's keepsakes had been shipped out the night before. As for Kalev's things, I didn't touch a single one of them. I left them all exactly where they were, just like a pile of worthless trash. Two heavy brass keys lay in the center of the coffee table. Resting right on top of them was the necklace that signified the status of Luna of the pack.Since our mating ceremony had never been completed, I was thus spared the tedious process of severing the bond with him.At 8:00 am sharp, Randy arrived at the door with Debbie. After verifying all of the details, Debbie signed the property transfer deed and smiled at me."I wish you all the best in your new home, Ms. Whiteclaw. May the Moon Goddess watch over you always."I returned her

The next morning, I went to see the witch, Megan Wysteria. When Mom passed away, a corner of the moonstone amulet that she'd been wearing had been knocked off, and Megan had helped me repair it. The silver repair lines crossed through the blue stone like a scar that would never heal.I put the amulet away in a velvet box and returned home. The moment I opened the door, a familiar scent of pheromones hit me in the face at once. Freya was seated on the couch in the living room, scrolling on her phone.I held my coat in one hand and the velvet box in the other. After walking in through the door, I turned sideways and closed it with my elbow, temporarily placing the velvet box on the low table at the entrance. I was planning to take my coat and put it on the coat rack in the room. But in the few seconds it took me to take off my coat and turn back around, I saw that the velvet box had already been opened, and Freya was brazenly wearing Mom's moonstone amulet around her neck.My mind
