Chapter 4

Author: Wendy77
A wave of absurdity swept through me.

I broke down laughing.

So all this time, Ken had believed Victor was his biological son.

He thought I was the wealthy family’s son who had been switched at birth.

That was why he had mistreated me every chance he got.

That was why he had poured every bit of love he had into Victor.

“Victor, can you do me a favor?”

Victor froze for a second, then nodded.

“Don’t tell him the truth yet. I’ll help you prepare the DNA test results.”

I pulled myself out of the memory.

When I looked at Ken again, he had already packed his bags. His passport was sitting in the most obvious spot, as if he couldn’t wait to leave.

“Joe, come here,” he called.

“I’m going to Atelia to see Victor and tell him the truth. Before I leave, come with me to the courthouse. I’m filing the paperwork to remove you as my dependent. From now on, you have nothing to do with my family.”

I nodded without a word and followed him there.

When Ken handed over the documents, the clerk looked up in surprise.

“He just graduated high school, and you’re already cutting him off?”

Ken’s face twisted with contempt. His voice was loud enough for everyone nearby to hear.

“He’s not my biological son. The hospital mixed up the babies back then.”

People around us started whispering. When they looked at me, their eyes were full of pity.

“He’s still a student, isn’t he? How can he just abandon him like that?”

“That man is heartless. Even if you raised a dog for nineteen years, you’d still feel something.”

That was exactly what I wanted to ask him too.

But Ken didn’t care at all. To him, everything he was doing was perfectly justified.

“He’s not mine. Raising him longer won’t change that.”

“I only care about blood. I only love my real son. A father and son are connected by blood. If he isn’t mine, he’ll never truly be family.”

The clerk looked at me with sympathy.

“Do you need legal assistance?”

I shook my head lightly.

“No. Please just process it.”

A few minutes later, Ken was no longer legally responsible for me.

After we walked out, he shoved a bank card into my hand.

“There’s ten thousand dollars in here. Consider it payment for raising you. From now on, don’t even think about claiming the Jasper family’s fortune. Keep your head down, get a job, and make your own money.”

I looked into his eyes, my voice hoarse.

“After all these years, did you really never care about me at all? Even if I wasn’t your biological son, I was obedient. I was sensible. I called you Dad for nineteen years.

“Victor already has everything. Why did you have to destroy my life too?”

Ken froze.

For a moment, something complicated flashed through his eyes.

“Yes, I wronged you. But I could never love you. Victor is my real son.

“I’m just a man from the bottom. I don’t even know who Victor’s real father is. But I swore I would protect him. I was willing to risk everything to change his life. I’d risk my life for him too.

“I couldn’t take that gamble. I couldn’t raise you well and let you become a threat to him. This city is only so big. I couldn’t let anything unpredictable enter Victor’s life.”

He paused.

Then his eyes turned vicious, and he leaned close to my ear.

“Joe, hate me all you want. Blame me all you want. But Victor is innocent.

“If you dare lay a finger on him, I’ll drag you down with me.”

I looked at him for a long time.

Then I smiled faintly and left the card in his hand.

“Mr. Zimmer, since we have nothing to do with each other anymore, it’s time I got justice for myself.”

Ken snorted and called me delusional. Then he grabbed his luggage and passport and headed for the airport.

He even posted a selfie on his social feed.

“I’m finally going to reunite with my biological son. From his online uncle to his dad. My son likes me so much. He’s going to be thrilled!”

After I saw the post, I blocked him.

Then I turned around and went to the police station to file a report.

I reported him under my real name for working with organ traffickers, organ theft, and attempted murder.

The hidden camera I had placed in my bedroom became solid evidence.

After leaving the police station, I boarded a train to Frangelia.

The truth was, getting into some mediocre college had only been a rumor I’d spread on purpose.

I scored highly enough to qualify for any top university in the country. Moreover, thanks to the physics competition, I already secured a special admission offer from one of the top universities.

After the train started moving, I looked out the window and saw a white contrail cutting across the sky.

“Dad,” I whispered, “I can’t wait to see your face when you finally learn the truth.”

Ken ignored the warning completely. From that day on, he started showing up near my campus all the time.Somehow, he even managed to get a job serving food in the dining hall.Every time I came by with my tray, he would pile it high. But the eager, ingratiating smile on his face only made me sick.Eventually, I stopped going to the dining hall altogether. That made him panic. One day, he blocked my path after class.“Jo… Ray, do you really hate Dad that much? You won’t even eat at the dining hall anymore? Takeout isn’t clean. You’re not allowed to eat that!”“Move.”I pushed past him coldly.Ken’s eyes reddened with frustration.“Yes, I wronged you! But that was because for nineteen years, I thought you were the Jasper family’s child!“But you know it too. If I’d known you were my real son, I would’ve loved you with everything I had. Look at how I treated Victor. Don’t you understand? I truly love my son!“Ray, I don’t care what name you use now or who you call family. My

Day after day, life moved on.With scholarships and tutoring jobs, I made it all the way to senior year. I even earned a spot in an overseas exchange program. That night, I studied late at the library. When I got back to the dorm, a hunched figure shifted under the streetlight.“Joe?”I whipped around and found myself staring into Ken’s weathered face.Four years had passed. He was out of prison.“Joe, it’s Dad.”He took two steps toward me.My expression instantly turned cold.“Mr. Zimmer, what do you want?”The way I addressed him seemed to cut him deep. He reached out, trying to grab my hand.“Joe, Dad was wrong. I’m sorry. I got everything wrong before. You’re my biological son!“I had no idea you got into Frangelia University. That’s my son. I knew you’d make something of yourself.”I took a deep breath and stepped back, putting distance between us.“Mr. Zimmer, I’m not your Joe anymore. I have a family now. My name is Ray Lincoln.“As for what you did to me in th

Ken stumbled backward several steps until his back hit a tree. His mouth kept moving, the same words falling out over and over.“Joe is my son…”The image of Joe’s thin, small frame flashed through his mind. That child had been so obedient. So sensible. No matter how much he suffered, he never complained. He only kept trying, carefully and quietly, to earn Ken’s approval.Ken remembered Joe’s bright eyes when he handed over his scholarship money and told him to buy a pair of leather shoes. He remembered how hard Joe had studied, all for one sincere word of praise from him.He remembered everything Joe had endured.“That’s right. Joe was like me.”Joe was allergic to seafood. So was he.Joe had the same eyes, the same jaw, even the same blood type. There had been so many tiny details, so many signs that proved Joe was his son.How had he never thought of it?No.Maybe it wasn’t that he had never thought of it.Maybe he had never dared to.Because the moment he thought

After the plane landed, Ken followed the location tag Victor had posted online and found his villa in Atelia without any trouble.Standing outside the front gate, Ken nervously straightened his collar and took several deep breaths. Then he sent Victor a private message.“Victor, it’s me. Uncle Ken.“No, not Uncle Ken.“I’m your father.“I came to see you.”A few moments later, the gate opened.Victor walked out slowly, wearing a limited-edition jersey that cost more than most people made in a year. The second he saw Ken, disgust and fear flashed across his face.“It’s you? What are you doing here?”“Victor, I know this might be hard for you to accept, but I’m your father.”Ken stepped toward him with red-rimmed eyes, his voice shaking with excitement.“Nineteen years ago, at the maternity ward, I switched the babies. You’re my biological son!”The next second, Steven and his wife walked out through the gate. They stood side by side behind Victor, their posture protective

By the time I woke up, the physics competition was long over.I rushed home like a madman and demanded to know why Ken had given me spoiled milk. Then I saw the comment he had just left under Victor’s post.“Don’t worry, Victor. You’ll definitely place in the competition. I’ll be praying for you. I won’t let anyone get in your way.”My phone slipped from my hand and hit the floor with a loud clatter. The last bit of trust I still had in Ken was gone.Victor didn’t place in that competition.Ken glanced at me and let out a quiet sigh.“What a shame. If I’d known this would happen, I should’ve had you tutor Victor first.”I forced down my hatred and applied to live on campus. After I moved into the dorms, Ken never texted me. The only time he reached out was when Victor got sick and missed school. Then he would ask me for updates.I buried myself in practice problems and studied so hard it scared my classmates. Then, on New Year’s Eve of senior year, Ken came looking for me f
