Chapter 1: The Death of the Good Girl

⋅ ⋅ ❦ Blaire Rose ❦ ⋅ ⋅

“She’s a bit… frigid, isn’t she?”

I froze, my hand hovering inches from the handle of the VIP suite door. I had travelled for hours in secret, desperate… to surprise Nolan during the Alpha training he’d been away for these past three months. I had imagined his face lighting up the moment he saw me. I pictured us celebrating our six-month anniversary privately before returning home together as the power couple we were meant to be… everyone expected us to be.

Instead, I found him in a nightclub—a den of sin—surrounded by his friends and other Alpha heirs. Thumping music vibrated through the door... and through the slight crack.

I saw the truth: Nolan was surrounded by strippers.

I stood there, paralysed, listening to him diminish and insult me while two girls twisted their bodies against his lap. Their laughter felt like broken glass against my skin.

“Frigid,” I heard his voice ring out with a crudeness I’d never heard before—never even knew he possessed. “That’s an understatement. Just looking at her turns me off like a cold shower.”

He downed his whiskey, his face contorted in a sneer, and continued his tirade. “It took me six months just to get her to date me, and the bitch still won’t sleep with me. She acts like she’s so pure and hard to get, like she’s actually worth the wait. Like her fucking virginity is made of diamonds. It’s exhausting playing along with her little saint routine.”

A friend of his barked out a laugh. “Pretty, innocent… and about as exciting as watching paint dry.”

“Six months and nothing? Man, I would’ve lost patience by week two.”

Another chimed in with a lazy chuckle, “Classic strategy. Make you wait long enough, you start thinking she’s worth more than she is.”

“Come on, Nolan,” another voice teased over the giggle of a girl. “She’s the good girl of the pack. Isn’t that what you wanted? A pure Luna?”

“You chased the good girl—what did you expect?”

“If my father hadn’t insisted I date a good girl, I wouldn’t have even bothered with her,” Nolan spat, leaning back as one of the girls trailed her fingers down his chest. “But I’m going to dump her the moment I take her virginity.”

“They told me I needed a respectable woman to balance my image if I’m going to take over the pack. Honestly? I wouldn’t have looked twice at her otherwise. And she’s only hard to get because she thinks it makes her special. It’s an act. A pathetic, holier-than-thou act…”

The clinking of glasses followed, sounding like nails in a coffin.

“So, what’s the plan? You’re getting married next month.”

“The plan?” Nolan laughed, the sound cold and unfamiliar. “Once I take that virginity on the wedding night and secure my position as the future Alpha, I’m done. I’ll keep her in the house to look pretty for the elders, and I’ll spend my nights elsewhere… in rooms like this. She’s a bargaining chip, nothing more.”

I wanted to storm in, to slap the smirk off his face and watch him crawl—the urge burned under my skin.

But I didn’t.

My palm itched to strike him, but I forced my hand into a fist. I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction.

I turned around and walked away, my heels clicking sharply against the floor.

A toxic cocktail of rage and humiliation simmered in my chest, building until it threatened to burst out of me.

Every sweet word, every midnight promise of a beautiful future—they were all lies, turning to ash. I wasn’t just angry; I was disgusted—mostly at myself for falling for a performance so cheap.

I had guarded my heart and my body for a man who viewed me as a chore, a stepping stone to his throne.

I went back to the hotel, pacing the room until my legs ached. I twisted my fingers together, my mind a chaotic blur, but one thought remained crystal clear: I could not live my life with such a man, or in such a way.

I am more than a prize to be won or a doll to be played with.

I knew my worth, even if Nolan was too blind to see it. I refused to be reduced to the hollow, frigid version of me he saw.

I pulled my phone from my bag and called my mother. She answered on the first ring.

“Blair… where the hell are you?” she shouted, nearly bursting my eardrum. I pulled the phone away, winced, and waited for her to finish venting. Then I brought it back once the ringing in my ears faded.

“You need to listen to me, Mum.”

“I am listening,” she said, her voice dropping into a calm that was far more terrifying than her shouting. It was the calm of a woman who had already decided the outcome before hearing a word.

“Mom, I’m calling it off,” I said, my voice trembling.

“I don’t follow, honey…”

“Please, just listen. The engagement—Nolan… he’s not who we thought he was. I’m at his training city; I saw him. He’s cheating, Mom. He’s mocking me behind my back, and he told his friends I’m nothing but a boring chore. He doesn’t love me—he doesn’t even like me…,” I said, my voice breaking, “he wants a puppet he can humiliate behind closed doors.”

“Blair, don’t be dramatic,” she snapped, her voice devoid of comfort—of any motherly instinct I so desperately craved. “Men will be men, especially Alphas in training. They have high testosterone and higher needs, and you haven’t exactly been… accommodating.”

Accommodating?

How could she say that to me? My own mother was justifying his betrayal before I even finished the story, telling me to be a better doormat. My heart didn’t just ache—it felt like it was being shredded by a dull blade. The woman who raised me was handing me over to a predator with a smile.

Leaving me gasping for air in a room that suddenly felt too small.

“Mother… he said he’s going to dump me the moment we’re married! He called me a bargaining chip!”

There was a pause.

For a fleeting second, I thought—hoped—she would soften. That she would remember the nights she combed my hair and told me I deserved the world. That she would choose me.

But the silence stretched… and shattered.

“And you are a bargaining chip for this family!” she hissed. “Do you know what it means to be a Luna? The power, the security, the prestige it brings to our bloodline? You don’t throw that away over a few strippers and a bruised ego. You will endure it, Blair Rose. You will marry him next month, or don’t bother coming home. You’ll be dead to us.”

The line went dead.

I stared at the screen for a second before screaming and hurling the phone across the room. It bounced off the carpet.

Fuck it.

Nolan saw me as a trophy to be broken for his Alpha throne, and my own flesh and blood saw me as a product to be sold for a title, and a fatter bank account.

“Pure… innocent… virgin,” I whispered, looking at myself in the mirror. My modest blouse and knee-length skirt didn’t feel like clothes anymore—they felt like a straitjacket.

They wanted me pure? They wanted the virginity they’d guarded like a sacred treasure just so they could auction it off to the highest bidder?

He wanted the perfect, untouched Luna?

A surge of electricity—dark and rebellious—raced through my veins. It was a heat I had never felt before—the birth of a woman who was done being told what she was worth.

Not soft. Not obedient. Not theirs to control.

I lunged for my unpacked luggage and tore it open. Right at the bottom was the dress my best friend, Cora, had smirked while packing.

She had been the only one to help me with this surprise for Nolan, and she’d insisted on this dress despite my protests. I could still hear her laughing, saying, “In case the Alpha training makes him forget what he’s missing, give him something he’ll never forget.”

I laid the dress out on the bed.

It was a slip of black lace, dangerously short, with a neckline that left nothing to the imagination.

If purity was the only thing they valued about me, then I was going to strip it away myself. I was going to ruin their perfect little investment.

Nolan wanted a virgin for his wedding night? Fine. He could have his bride.

But I would make damn sure he wasn’t the one who got to break me.

I wasn’t going to be a fucking sacrificial lamb for his ego or my mother’s greed.

Tonight, I was choosing for myself.
