...

I raced from the airport to the Pittman Mansion, my heart pounding with anticipation.

The cab screeched to a halt, and I stepped out to see my mother emerging from the house, arm-in-arm with my cousin.

Tessa Pittman beamed with pride, her eyes sparkling as if she were showcasing a masterpiece. Bianca Pittman, radiant in a wedding gown, blushed demurely as relatives fawned over her.

"Bianca has got your eyes, Tessa. Like you stepped out of a time machine."

"Look at that gown. It's made for her."

Tessa's smile deepened, fine lines crinkling around her eyes. She pinched Bianca's cheek affectionately. "She's always been my mirror image. My baby's getting married today, and my heart's breaking a little."

Bianca giggled, nestling into Tessa's embrace. "Don't be sad, Tessa. Even after I'm married, I'll visit every day, I promise."

Her words sparked teasing laughter from the crowd.

"Every day? Poor Jared will be left warming the bed alone."

"No kidding. Bianca is practically glued to Tessa's side."

Bianca stomped her foot playfully, sparking another round of chuckles. I watched from the shadows, clutching my phone so tightly my knuckles turned white. My chest ached as if someone had driven a knife through it.

A butler approached, holding a velvet box. He bowed slightly, his voice smooth. "This is a custom wedding necklace from Mr. Reilly for his fiancée. The centerpiece emerald, a gift from Mr. Pittman Sr., is meant to surprise his granddaughter. Please accept it, Miss Pittman."

Bianca's eyes sparkled, her cheeks flushing as she reached for the box. "Oh, Jared's too sweet."

I let out a sharp, bitter laugh and stepped into the light. All eyes turned to me, wide with shock, as I snatched the box and flashed a tight smile. "Tell Jared I said thanks."

The room fell deathly silent.

Bianca's smile collapsed into a grimace, while Tessa's face darkened. The butler blinked, his gaze darting between us before settling on Tessa.

"Mrs. Pittman, what's going on?" he asked, puzzled.

I opened the box, revealing a dazzling emerald necklace, unmistakably a family heirloom. My fingers traced the gem's cool surface as I met the butler's eyes. "I'm Wendy Pittman."

Turning to the stunned crowd, I let each word land like a hammer. "I'm Jared Reilly's fiancée."

...

Bianca's face drained of color, her lips trembling as she hissed at the servants behind her. "What are you standing there for? Get my necklace back!"

"Don't you dare!" I stepped back, raising an eyebrow at Bianca. "Getting comfortable playing heiress, are you? Do you really think you're me?"

Tessa swept in front of Bianca, her brow furrowed. "Wendy, what are you doing? Don't ruin your sister's big day!"

"Sister?" I laughed, pointing at Bianca with disdain. "Everyone knows the Pittman family has one heiress, and that's me!"

Tessa's jaw tightened, her tone turning sharp. "Shut up! Stop spouting nonsense!"

Bianca leaned in, her whisper venomous in my ear. "So what if you're the heiress? You've been gone five years. No one remembers you."

My hand flew up, and I slapped her hard across the face. "Shut up! A freeloader like you has no right to talk to me like that!"

Hakon's eyes darkened, a storm brewing. He grabbed his phone and dialed a number. "Find out where Bianca and Tessa Pittman are staying. "Until Rupert came back, I was in the dark." Jared's eyes reddened, his voice breaking. "These past five years, I missed you every day.""Missed me?" I scoffed, my voice sharp. "Missed me while you were cozying up with Bianca? Nearly marrying her?"He went silent, his face crumpling."Time's up," I said, turning to leave. He dropped to his knees, the lobby gasping around us. He pleaded, "Please, give me one more chance. I swear, you're the only one I'll ever love."I looked down at him. "You had your chance, but you blew it."Suddenly, a shrill voice cut through the air. "Wendy Pittman!"It was Bianca, now a shadow of her former self. Her face was sallow, and her hair disheveled.Tessa stood beside her, her expression complex."Wendy," Bianca said, her smile venomous. "It's been a while."I ignored her, turning to leave, but Tessa stepped in front of me, wringing her hands. "Wendy, wait."She looked much older than the last time I saw her. The wrinkles at the corners of her

Hakon's lips twitched into a half-smile. "Not quite. Just want to know you better."His candor sent a flutter through my chest, but our conversation flowed effortlessly. Instead, he listened intently, his responses thoughtful and engaging.By the time we finished, the city outside glowed with evening lights."I'll drive you home," he said, grabbing his jacket with a tone that brooked no argument. In the elevator, his cedar scent filled the space. I stole glances at his chiseled jaw, the faint stubble, and the confident way he carried himself."Caught you staring," he muttered, turning with a playful glint in his eyes.My cheeks burned, and I quickly looked away.He chuckled, his voice low and warm. "Don't worry. It means I'm not completely striking out."His car, a sleek black Maybach, glided through the night. He opened the door for me, his ha

Jared's words struck like a knife, twisting in my chest.I raised an eyebrow. "So, you're pleading her case now?"Jared didn't answer, but the guilt in his eyes said enough. I laughed, the sound hollow. "Do you know what these five years were like for me?"My voice shook with emotion. "I barely slept, pouring everything into caring for Rupert. I never complained, always dreaming of coming back to you."I locked eyes with him. "And you? You were playing house with Bianca, nearly putting a ring on her finger."He opened his mouth, but nothing came out. When I stood up to leave, he reached out for me. "Wendy.""Don't touch me!" I snapped, stepping back. "The moment you chose her, we were done."Outside, the sunlight stung my eyes.I took out my phone and texted Rupert: [I'm calling off the engagement with Jared.]Blinking hard, I forced the tears back. This was for the best. A text came from an unknown number.[It's Jared Reilly. Heard you're back. Can we meet?]I stared at the screen, torn between hope and dread. ...The voice struck like lightning, silencing the hall. All eyes turned to the entrance, where an elderly man stood, leaning on a cane.Rupert Pittman stood tall, flanked by a group of bodyguards. His sharp gaze swept the room, softening with anguish when it landed on me."Grandpa!" I cried out.Five years had aged him, his hair now fully gray, but his commanding presence hadn't dimmed."Rupert?" Tessa gasped, the stick slipping from her hand and clattering to the floor.Bianca shrank behind her, trembling like a leaf.Rupert stepped forward, his hand brushing my swollen cheek. "Don't worry. I've got your back."His words broke me, and I collapsed into his arms, sobbing. He patted my back gently, but when he saw the bruises on my skin, his eyes flashed with lethal rage.He turned to Tessa, his voice dropped to a chilling growl. "Is this how you treat my granddaughter?"Tessa's lips quivered. "It's not what you think. Wendy was causing a scene.""Stop lying!" Rupert roared,
