Avery's POV

"Good," he said with the polished voice he used to address the guest in the ballroom. "Go back inside. We shouldn't keep the guests waiting."

He turned on his heel and disappeared back into the ballroom, leaving me alone outside.

i looked toward the direction where Jax had just vanished. The garden seemed empty but I was sure he was still there in the dark.

Suddenly, a twig snapped to my left. I gasped and spun around expecting to see Mr. Thorne or a security guard. Instead, I saw Jax standing there. The moonlight caught the sharp line of his jaw and the weariness in his eyes.

He just looked at me without saying a word, he kept looking at me in a way Ethan never had.

He looked at my dress and the heavy gold necklace that branded me as a Thorne property. Slowly, he shook his head.

It wasn't a gesture of disappointment. It was more of a silent question.
