AVERY POV

"Avery," a familiar voice voice called just as I was about to round the corner, heading to the school's gate.

"Jax?" I turned with a bit of surprise. He was leaning on the wall in an alley, as if waiting for someone. "I don't think I've ever seen you in school this early."

He shrugged in response as he pushed off the wall and strolled over to me.

"I've been waiting for about 10 minutes. You really do go to school too early. Such a model student."

I did not miss the sarcasm in his tone.

"Why were you waiting for me?"

He cocked an eyebrow in amusement.

"Is it weird that I'm waiting for my girlfriend?"

I rolled my eyes in response.

"Jax, yesterday was just...."

"Trying to get one up against Cassandra?" He completed. "I know. The point is the fact that everyone knows now. You've made it public, like I thought you would."

I scoffed at that.

"You never intended to let me choose, did you? You already made the choice for me."

"No," he shook his head with a chuckle. "I did let

Avery's POVI became a bit relaxed as Jax finally turned to leave and I watched until he faded out of my sight“Come on, Avery. It’s late,” Ethan murmured and his golden boy personality was fully restored. “Let’s get you home.”As he walked me towards his car, I felt like a puppet whose strings had just been transferred to a new handler. Jax had vanished into the darkness, and I had chosen stability, but I still felt unstable. Though Jax had come back, he still skipped practice and didn't show up for any of his remaining classes in the following two days. The other students also seemed to have all adopted Ethan’s rumors that Jax was a liability who had finally abandoned his commitments. The spread made me feel somehow guilty and it kept weighing me down.Jax never lied about his intentions toward me. He was only secretive about the details of his past.In Jax's absence, Ethan was suddenly everywhere and always checking on me. He would send me a text before breakfast, and we would ha

Avery's POV I took another step back. My heart pounded from the realization of Ethan’s malice. This was not someone who wanted to protect me; he was a monster who wanted to own me by eliminating his rival. Before I could reply, a figure moved out from the back of a large delivery van parked across the lot.It was Jax.And he was walking towards the parking lot.Has he not left town?Has he been watching me since he dropped the letter? His face was furious as a result of being cheated. He pulled down his hood and clenched his hands at his sides while staring at us with his eyes cold and devastating Ethan immediately tensed as he saw his eyes. “Get out of here, Jax,” Ethan commanded with a sharp voice that could command authority from the fainthearted. “You are going to get a restraining order if you don't stop stalking her.”Jax ignored him and focused on me. His dark eyes burned as he stared at me and took position beside Ethan.“You came back to him,” Jax said in a low voice. “Afte

Avery's POV The note was like a blow to my gut. Jax was gone.Standing on the porch with the note clutched in my hand, the truth of the sealed file suddenly hit me with force. He didn't fight to have me, he didn't try to explain and he didn't show the rage I expected from him. He simply vanished and that confirmed that he was a dangerous villain who could cut ties before things would get complicated. After everything, from the kisses to the shared triumph on the ice, he just abandoned me to the aftermath of the rumors and the scandal. He let the sealed file and my fear win. The intense connection I felt with him could only be taken as my desperate need for validation. Was he even capable of a real relationship? He was just a damaged soul that was running from consequences. I spent the evening in a state of numb exhaustion. When I recovered, I called Lila and told her Jax was gone. I lied about the note and told her that he just left without a word as I didn't want to admit the fi

Avery's POVThe collision with Jax left me reeling with my heart slamming against my ribs like a trapped bird. The force of his question and the intensity in his eyes were terrifying. They were so close to the violence that the file hinted at. I yanked my wrist free and ran off in the other direction. He lunged forward but I didn't wait. I abandoned my journey towards the cafeteria to meet Lila and turned into the nearest empty corridor, as I was in desperate need of space.I spent the rest of the school day like a ghost. I skipped the afternoon classes and hid in the dusty and rarely used bleachers of the auxiliary gym. I just wanted to avoid running into Jax. Despite not encountering him, it still felt like I could see him in every shadow. All the details from the files kept haunting me.My mind was just like a relentless and exhausting battlefield.I had been played again. I should have known better than to trust such a too-good-to-be-true nice handsome boy, he was bound to have

Avery's POV My hands trembled as I picked up the folder that now felt heavier than iron. The paper was cool against my skin but the fear that gripped me when I tried to guess its contents burned me from the inside out. Sealed Disciplinary File: Reid, Jaxon K. The name was printed in bold letters and that made it more terrifying. I came here to confirm my worst suspicions but I couldn't feel the urge to continue again. As I pulled out the file, I heard as Lila’s sneaker tapped faintly against the floor outside. That was undoubtedly a signal that the principal had shown up from the end of the hallway. My time was running out and I still couldn't open the file. Finally, I summoned courage and slid the file open with a deep sigh. The pages were filled with official jargon and some legal phrasing. But the critical details seemed obscured. Most of the words had been covered with ink while it was being printed and that remaining half was like a puzzle.I managed to read the few words and

AVERYThe next day at school was no better than yesterday.Sometimes, I wonder why I worry so much about this. It just doesn't seem to be as much of my business as I make it seem.I just can't shake the feeling I get from Jax whenever his past is mentioned. The way he closes up, locking himself away behind walls so high and thick that the voice of reason cannot even begin to reach him.It was the most annoying situation I've ever been in and Jax doesn't make it any better.Even worse were Ethan's words. At first, it was a girl, and now, he almost ended a guy's career? That was a new piece of information unlike anything I can even begin to process. If these rumours portray anything, it is the extent of violence Jax might be capable of.Unsafe extents. It is to the point that he might end up hurting me at the slightest provocation. The way he held my arm that day was somewhat proof that he might have done those things.Yet, I can't shake the feeling that he is hiding something as well,
