Mag-log inThis wasn’t ordinary ammunition. He could feel it. A strange burning sensation was spreading through his veins, moving from his injured leg through the rest of his body. His muscles began to weaken almost immediately, and his vision started to blur around the edges. “Wolf poison…” he muttered in disbelief. His breathing became ragged. He tried to force himself back onto his feet, but his arms barely had enough strength to hold him. Then suddenly, a huge boot came down against his chest. Damien’s body slammed back into the ground. He struggled beneath the weight, his claws scraping against the dirt as he tried to move. “You’re quite strong for someone who’s only a beta.” The voice was deep. Cold. There wasn’t even a trace of emotion in it. The sound sent an unsettling shiver down Damien’s spine. He tried to lift his head, but his vision had become so blurred that everything around him looked like shadows. All he could make out was a tall, broad-shouldere
Damien immediately slammed his foot down on the brake pedal, bringing the car to a sudden stop. The tires screeched against the road, and the force of the sudden halt jerked both him and Beta Kael forward in their seats. A thick cloud of dust rose around them, swallowing the road and making it almost impossible to see what had just stopped in front of them. “What the fuck?” Beta Kael muttered, squinting through the dusty air as he leaned forward to get a better look. “Who the hell are these people?” As the dust slowly began to settle, several dark figures emerged from the vehicle that had blocked their path. They were dressed entirely in black, their faces partially covered, and each of them carried a weapon in their hands. Beta Kael quickly counted them. Six. There were six men. “The fuck…” he muttered under his breath. His hand immediately reached for the door handle. He pushed it open and was already preparing to step out when Damien also unbuckled his seat belt.
Maybe then, they would finally get the life they had always wanted. Damien slowly pulled away. His eyes were red, but he forced a small smile. “Goodbye, Amelia.” He released her before his heart could change its mind. Then he turned around. And walked away. He didn’t look back. Not even when he heard Amelia’s quiet sob behind him. The moment Damien stepped outside the mansion, he saw Beta Kael standing beside the car. Seraphina was standing near the front door as well. Judging from the expressions on their faces, Damien immediately knew they had heard everything. They had been listening. Of course they had. “Damien…” Seraphina stepped forward. Damien quickly wiped the tears from his cheeks. “I… we’ll meet again in Velaris,” he muttered, his voice unsteady. “I’m going home.” He glanced briefly toward the house. “Please take care of her.” Seraphina’s eyes softened. “I will.” Damien nodded. He didn’t trust himself to say anything else. He
“Please, Damien… I’m sorry I called off the wedding. We could get married and be happy again. We could live as a family like we’ve always wanted. We could go back to Velaris and start over…” Amelia cried, her arms wrapped tightly around him. Damien stood completely still. Her words were everything he had once prayed to hear. We could get married. We could be a family. We could start over. His heart wanted to believe every single word. Every part of him wanted to turn around, pull her into his arms, and tell her that he had changed his mind. That he didn’t care about anything anymore. That he would stay if she promised never to let him go again. But deep down, beneath all the hope and longing, there was a painful truth he could not ignore. He knew Amelia. He knew the way she looked at Aiden. He knew the bond between them. And he knew that whatever Amelia was feeling for him right now might be tangled with guilt, gratitude, fear of losing him, and everything th
“Damien…” “We both know you love Aiden.” The words came out painfully. Amelia’s eyes widened. “You’re only here choosing me because you feel sorry for me. Not because you truly love me.” A pool of tears immediately gathered in her eyes. “That’s not true.” “It is.” “No, Damien.” Amelia shook her head, her voice becoming desperate. “I love you. You are my second-chance mate and—” “No, Amelia.” He shook his head and ran both hands through his hair. “You don’t love me the way I love you.” Amelia’s lips trembled. “You don’t want me the way I want you. You don’t need me the way I need you.” “Damien…” She took a step toward him. He immediately raised his hand. “Please.” The single word stopped her. His chest rose and fell heavily. “I need you to want me as much as I want you, Amelia.” His voice cracked slightly. “I need you to need me the way I need you. I need to feel that I’m the person your heart reaches for before anyone else.” His eyes glisten
“Damien…” she called, and Damien immediately stopped. “Can we talk? Please,” she whispered. Damien slowly turned around and stared at her. He bit the inside of his cheek, trying to steady the emotions rising inside him. His gaze shifted briefly toward Seraphina, then Gloria, before returning to Amelia. “Sure…” he finally muttered. Amelia carefully handed Arthur to Gloria, who immediately took the sleeping boy into her arms. “I’ll put him in his room,” Gloria whispered. Amelia nodded. Gloria carried Arthur upstairs, leaving Amelia and Damien alone in the living room. Seraphina looked between them for a moment. She could see the tension hanging heavily between them, the words neither of them had been able to say. They needed to talk without anyone listening. Without saying another word, she quietly stepped outside and closed the door behind her. Silence settled over the room. Amelia turned toward Damien. “Damien, I…” “If you’re going to say something that wil
