Chapter 1

"Cedric, you carried me off in front of the whole pack. Aren't you afraid Cassandra will pick a fight with you?"

My hand froze on the door. Through the gap, I could see everything.

Elena had her arms wrapped around his neck.

The robe had slipped to her waist, revealing hickeys all over her neck and shoulders.

"What if Cassandra breaks the mate bond and takes all those wolves with her?

"What if your nightmare comes true? What will you do then?"

Tears welled in Elena's eyes, as though all she cared about was Cedric.

He pulled her back into his arms and spoke in an incredibly gentle voice.

"Cassandra won't do that. She wouldn't dare.

"Just look at her. In front of everyone, she grabbed me and begged me not to go."

Cedric gave a short laugh, contempt in his eyes.

"A female Alpha who loves me enough to bow to me willingly? How could she ever bring herself to reject me?"

Elena pulled my robe tighter around herself and let out a mocking laugh.

"Cedric, if you want me so badly, why don't you let her go?

"Everyone outside must have heard us."

When I thought about the pleasure and the thrill that had poured through the mate bond, my chest ached all over again.

It was a passion Cedric and I had never shared.

Cedric was quiet for a moment.

"Cassandra is the pack's Luna, and she's our strongest female warrior.

"She knows how to negotiate with the other packs. As long as she's here, the Crescent Moon pack will remain at peace.

"But don't worry, Elena. Sooner or later, she'll accept you by my side. She loves me too much to leave."

I stood frozen at the door for a long time before I released the handle, turned, and walked away.

Three years earlier, when I came of age, I found my fated mate.

Back then, Cedric had only just become Alpha of the Crescent Moon pack.

I was the one who brought my best warriors, drove off the invading rogues, and defended the Crescent Moon pack's territory for him.

Once Cedric became my mate, I supplied him with doctors, fighters...

He was grateful for everything I gave him, and he fell deeply in love with me.

He'd sworn on the moon that he would never do anything to hurt me.

But now he actually believed the wolves loyal to me would betray me just as he had.

That same night, I rushed back to my own pack and opened the safe.

Inside lay a pact witnessed by Alpha King Alaric Voss.

When Cedric marked me, he'd sealed this oath with his blood.

"If I, Cedric Thorne, betray Cassandra, she has the right to reject me.

"Once the mate bond is broken, Cassandra may take back her own pack's commanders, and the southern territories will belong to her."

I summoned my most trusted lieutenant, Beta Ron Mercer.

He went down on one knee in front of me.

"Alpha, what are your orders?"

I handed him the oath along with a list of names.

"Take this oath to the Alpha King. I'm petitioning him to break my mate bond with Cedric.

"As of today, every wolf still loyal to me is to stop supporting the Crescent Moon pack.

"Bring the wounded, the children, and anyone willing to follow me back to our territory."

Ron looked up.

"Alpha, are you really going to break the mate bond with him?"

I gave a firm nod.

"Yes. If he's chosen Elena, he'll get nothing else from me."

Ron went to carry out my orders.

I began gathering evidence that Cedric had been unlawfully seizing territory from other packs.

I would make betraying me the choice he regretted most in his life.

After Elena died, Cedric barely grieved.Instead, he kept coming to my pack, bringing jewelry one day and flowers the next.He wanted my forgiveness, but I refused to see him.I had agreed to let Clarence court me, and he had been staying at my palace. At sunset, I rested my head on Clarence's shoulder and asked, "Aren't you afraid I'll never accept you?"Clarence tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear."My answer hasn't changed. Whatever you choose, I'll respect it."Cedric had believed that because I was his mate, all my warriors and all my land belonged to him too. He'd never truly respected me. But Clarence was different.Even after all the pain Cedric had caused me, I was still willing to believe in love. When the next full moon came, I planned to seal a mate bond with Clarence. But before we could, our territory came under attack, and Clarence and I had to fight.A pack from the borderlands thought we were still weak after rebuilding and saw a chance to launch a surprise att

I returned to my pack and began rebuilding our home.Every warrior who'd followed me to the Crescent Moon pack came back to me.From that day on, my pack would never depend on anyone else again. After everything was settled, Clarence came to check on my injuries. He carried the silver crown the Alpha King had sent me, and his fingers brushed my hair."Congratulations on freeing yourself from a relationship that only hurt you, Cassandra."Before the statue of the Moon Goddess, I placed the silver crown on my head.At that moment, the statue began to glow, its light falling over Clarence and me.My wolf stirred inside me, and I looked up into his eyes. The High Priestess beside us beamed."Cassandra, the Moon Goddess has chosen a second mate for you."You and Clarence are fated mates."Clarence blushed and bowed his head to me."Cassandra, the Moon Goddess has given us this chance."But whether you accept it or not, I'll respect your decision."I once believed that sealing a mate bond me

Cassandra walked straight out of the temple without looking back. Her pack's warriors and her family were waiting outside. They all dropped to one knee in respect."Welcome home, Alpha."Cedric heard every word, but there was nothing he could do.Their mate bond was broken. Cedric would never again feel Cassandra's love or care. His mind went blank, as if someone had torn away the most important part of him.He wanted to go after Cassandra, but the severed bond had wounded his wolf, leaving him too weak to move.A guard had to support him as he stumbled outside. But Cassandra was long gone. Only Elena remained, abandoned on the ground. When she saw Cedric come out, Elena threw herself into his arms."That woman is finally gone. I'll be here for you from now on."Elena reached for Cedric, but the moment he caught her scent, bile rose in his throat and he recoiled."You promised me that once you broke the mate bond with Cassandra, you'd be with me."Cedric, are you going to break your pr

Cedric was silent for a long time."I admit I was wrong to leave Cassandra alone in the forest."But severing the mate bond will hurt both our wolves."His voice softened as he looked at me."This is between us. Let's talk about it at home."You can remain Luna of the Crescent Moon pack."Maybe Cedric thought letting me remain Luna was some kind of gift.He had no idea that neither he nor that title meant anything to me anymore."Cedric, I only want to break the mate bond."I stopped caring about being your Luna a long time ago."The Alpha King looked up at the Moon Goddess, then said solemnly, "You betrayed the fate the Moon Goddess chose for you. You have no right to keep Cassandra's territory or continue drawing on her pack's strength."One of the elders came to stand beside me too."She was hurt because of you. We can no longer trust a leader like you."Cedric's face grew darker and darker. The elders had never dared to oppose him before. Whenever disagreements arose, I always calm

The Alpha King raised a hand, ready to open the ceremony. But Cedric spoke before he could."Before the bond is broken, I ask that we first investigate Cassandra's collusion with the rogues."I saw it myself. She and the rogues ganged up on Elena. Cassandra's jealousy is out of control. She can't tolerate even a single helpless Omega in the pack."She's the one who isn't fit to be this pack's Luna anymore!"I looked at the man who had stood by my side for three years. Even now, he was still taking Elena's side."Did you see me order the rogues to attack Elena?"Cedric's expression stiffened."By the time I got there, Elena was already on the ground."I smiled bitterly."Then you didn't see anything. You only saw Elena pretending to be weak."You didn't see the rogue bite clean through my shoulder, and you didn't see Ron almost die at their hands!"Cedric tried to explain, but Elena burst into the temple, sobbing. She threw herself at Cedric and clung to his arm."Cedric, you have to be

Back at the Crescent Moon pack, Elena had already taken the seat of honor. She had the servants rearrange the room, but Cedric couldn't sit still.Ever since he got back from the forest, he'd been trying to find me through the mate bond. All he felt was a deep pain that only came when his mate was close to death."Cassandra..."When Elena heard Cedric murmur my name, she pressed closer to him."Why are you still thinking about her?"She said she'd bring those rogues and kill us both!"Cedric's brows furrowed."But she was hurt so badly."Elena went stiff for a second."But... she brought it on herself! If she hadn't meant to hurt me, those crazed rogues never would have hurt her."When Elena saw that his frown hadn't eased, tears immediately spilled down her cheeks."Cedric, do you regret being with me?"Normally, Cedric would have pulled her into his arms in a heartbeat. But this time, he ignored her.A guard burst in."Alpha, there's news from the Alpha King."Clarence saved Cassandr
