Chapter 8

Author: Jett
When Adrian was questioned, he sat in a daze.

Over the next three days, he barely spoke to anyone.

Surveillance footage showed that Adrian had caused some of Hannah's injuries before my father attacked Hannah. The extent of those injuries meant Adrian was facing serious charges.

When an officer explained that to Adrian, he finally looked up.

"I want a lawyer," he said.

Then, after a long pause, "And I want a psychiatric evaluation."

His lawyer immediately petitioned for an emergency psychiatric

"Toward their remains?""That's the story."That night, Adrian did not sleep.Adrian sat on the edge of the bed, rubbing the scar at his wrist until the skin split open. Blood ran over his palm.I knelt in front of him.Don't.Please don't.Adrian stared into the darkness."If that was you," he murmured, "do it again."Nothing happened.Hours passed. Then, just before dawn, something deep within me tightened.Whatever remained of our old bond trembled once, faint but unmistakable.Adrian shot to his feet.Adrian did not know where I was. He could not see me. But his inner wolf, scarred by the old injury, seemed to lift its head and turn toward the east—toward the cemetery. That was the night he escaped. On the secure ward, patients' shoes were locked away overnight. So Adrian climbed over the wire fence barefoot. The sharp wire cut into the soles of his feet, leaving a trail of bloody footprints along the wall. Each bloody footprint hurt to see.I followed him closely, terrified he wou

The extent of those injuries meant Adrian was facing serious charges. When an officer explained that to Adrian, he finally looked up."I want a lawyer," he said. Then, after a long pause, "And I want a psychiatric evaluation."His lawyer immediately petitioned for an emergency psychiatric assessment, citing Adrian's documented insomnia, erratic behavior, and rapid deterioration in custody. Adrian was not simply released. Pending further proceedings, a court ordered him transferred to a secure psychiatric facility for evaluation and treatment.Adrian accepted the transfer without protest.Adrian obeyed because nothing seemed to matter to him anymore. In the hospital, he was the most obedient patient. He ate when told, took his medication without argument, and made no attempt to ru

Customers cursed at me, employers shortchanged me, and more than once I ended a shift bruised from a fight.Once, my blood sugar crashed and I fell off my bike. A stranger took me to the hospital. The moment I heard what the visit would cost, I walked out without looking back. But it was not enough. No matter what I did, it was never enough. The treatment costs seemed bottomless.I threw everything I had at those bills, and the gap barely seemed to close.Later, I saw that an underground clinic was recruiting test subjects.Three thousand dollars a day.I signed up.The screening showed that I was anemic and malnourished. I did not qualify.I had already given up when someone stopped me at the door and offered me a different trial. It involved werewolf-specific silver-derived compounds and wolfsbane antidotes, and the side effects were severe.Ten thousand dollars a day.I thought of Adrian lying in that hospital bed and agreed. The side effects came quickly. My hair began to fall out.

A familiar voice sounded from the doorway."You said my daughter was here. Where is she?""Why can't I see her?"I looked up. My father stood in the doorway, so badly abused that I barely recognized him.His face was bruised, his eyes clouded. He looked around the room, then turned to leave."My daughter isn't here.""She must have gone straight home after school.""I need to go back and cook for her. That girl is picky. She doesn't like food made by other people."For a moment, I could not move.My father seemed to have forgotten almost everything except the child I had once been.My mother died early.Once, he had doted on me.Adrian was the one choice he could never forgive me for making. The assistant pulled him back and quickly explained.Over the past few weeks, the abuse had pushed my father to the brink of a complete breakdown.Adrian's men had once asked whether they should get my father medical help, but Adrian refused. After that, no one dared bring it up again.Adrian swaye

Adrian opened the file. His hand looked steady until I noticed the tremor in his thumb. At first, the payments looked ordinary: insurance, emergency credit, small transfers from known accounts. Then the pattern changed.A cash deposit.Another one.A transfer from my grandmother's account, made days after the sale of her house. Then several payments from a now-closed account, each larger than the last.Adrian stared at the dates.I knew exactly when he understood. The first cash deposit had arrived the morning after I told him I was tired of carrying him.Three days later, another payment came from my grandmother's account—just after the sale of her house. Then, beginning less than two weeks after Adrian signed the bond-severance papers, a series of much larger deposits started arriving from a now-closed account.Adrian enlarged the screen, then checked the dates again as though repetition might make them tell a different story."No," he whispered.Ethan stepped closer."What is it?"A

The landlady glanced over and sighed."She's having another episode.""Her granddaughter died years ago. She spends all day holding that urn and saying the girl has gone out to bring her husband home.""Completely out of her mind."A tremor ran through Adrian. Then he laughed."Dead?""Good."Adrian snatched the urn from my grandmother's arms and slammed it to the floor."Grace Carter, you've really outdone yourself.""You were so afraid I'd come after you that you hired all these people to put on a show?""You think I'll believe this?"He seized the landlady by the collar, his expression savage."How much did she pay you? Tell her to get out here."Terrified, the landlady tore herself free and fled. The urn had cracked but not burst open. My grandmother gathered it into her arms and began to sob."Adrian, Adrian, why don't you want Grace anymore..."Adrian staggered to his feet, turned, and walked out without looking back."Tell Grace Carter I will never believe her again.""I will fi
