Chapter 3

Author: Stars
The next day, I went to Marcus’ villa to apply for the job.

Marcus opened the door himself.

Dressed casually, his fitted turtleneck outlined the strong lines of his chest and shoulders.

He greeted me warmly and invited me in, explaining the details of my job as we walked through the house.

To be honest, I was uneasy. Being alone in his territory, if he tried anything inappropriate, I had no way to fight back.

Then suddenly, I walked straight into his back with a hard thud, making my eyes hurt.

“Sorry, Alpha. I didn’t mean to.”

Marcus’ expression darkened slightly. “What did you just call me?”

My heart skipped a beat. I had no idea what I’d done wrong. Stammering, I said, “A-Alpha.”

He frowned, taking a slow step toward me. “Grace, don’t play dumb. You really expect me to believe you don’t recognize me?”

I looked carefully at him and shook my head. “But I don’t.

“I’m just a small-town healer, and I’ve never even been to your pack before. You must have confused me with someone else.”

Marcus’ face grew colder. I could feel the effort it took for him to keep his temper under control.

However, I truly didn’t recognize this man.

His jaw tightened. He grabbed my chin, forcing me to meet his eyes.

“Grace. You really dare say you don’t know who I am?”

Instinctively, I tried to pull away, but he caught my wrist and pushed me back against the wall.

His other hand braced around my waist to keep me from getting hurt, though his strength made my heart race with fear.

I stared up at his handsome face.

Then, an image flashed through my mind of a boy’s face, covered in scars left by a wolf’s claws.

The fragments of memory began to fit together.

My breath caught, and my whole body broke into a cold sweat. I remembered who he was.

Seeing the change in my expression, Marcus smirked faintly. “You remember now?”

I cursed silently in my head.

Of all the people to run into here, it had to be him!

Before Jeremy, I had another boyfriend.

When I was still in school, I’d developed a deep fascination with medicine. I loved studying anatomy models, memorizing herbs, and taking detailed notes.

However, that obsession made me seem strange. I kept to myself, quiet and withdrawn. Most of the other pups thought I was a freak, some even whispering that I was a witch who could curse people.

Because of that, I had no friends.

The only companion I had was a stray dog I fed after school.

I used to save my breakfast money to buy him dog food. He was the only one who stayed by my side at the time.

One afternoon, on my way home, I saw a boy huddled in a corner, holding my little dog in his arms.

Across from him stood a group of bullies, throwing rocks at him and laughing.

“Ugly freak! No wonder your parents dumped you!”

“Monster! Cursed pup!”

Though the boy was covered in bruises, he refused to let go of the dog. My dog whimpered softly in his arms.

I couldn’t stand it anymore. I stepped forward and shouted, “Stop it! What do you think you’re doing?!”

When they saw me, the bullies froze, and their faces went pale.

“It’s that witch! They say she eats pups and keeps their insides in jars!”

The group scattered instantly.

I kneeled beside the boy and helped him to his feet.

I knew who he was, a wandering pup who often slept around this part of town.

Rumor had it that when he was born, a witch prophesied he’d bring misfortune to everyone around him. So, his father, enraged, had slashed his face with a wolf’s claw and abandoned him.

The old man who had taken him in had died not long ago, leaving the boy to fend for himself on the streets.

“Grace, it’s all my fault. I’m sorry. Please don’t be with Jeremy. We can start over, okay?”Jeremy was on his knees in front of me, clutching my hands.Looking at him now, I only felt disgust.“When you dumped me back then, did it never cross your mind that you were wrong?” I said coldly.“You’re not sorry, Jeremy. You just realized I’m useful again.”Jeremy froze.“You only chased me in the first place because I had a little money you could burn through,” I went on. “Then you went after Stacy, because she had more to offer.“Now that Stacy’s run out of value, you’re crawling back to me.“Do you really think I’m still the same naive girl who’d forgive you no matter what, Jeremy?”My words hit Jeremy like ice water.“But you can’t be with Marcus either. He already knew who you really were and wants the power and influence. He’s no different from me.”I smiled faintly. “But he is. And if being with me gives him an advantage, I’ll give it to him willingly.“Just like when w

A banquet hosted by the Alpha King was one that every Alpha attended.Just as I expected, I ran into Jeremy, with Stacy by his side. From the moment I walked through the door, Jeremy’s eyes widened in disbelief as he looked me over.Kate was there too, glaring at me with open disdain. Ever since Marcus had thrown her out after her lies were exposed, the sweetness she used to fake was gone. Now, her voice dripped with venom. “Marcus, you’re really choosing this lowly Omega? I’m ten times better than her! What can she offer you?”Marcus shot her a look. “Watch your mouth. I told you that if you ever disrespect Grace again, I won’t let it slide.”Kate curled her lips and stopped taking. However, Jeremy stared coldly at me. “So that’s why you never came back to apologize. You’ve already hooked up with someone else.“You really think being with the man cursed by the witch to kill his own father won’t bring you bad luck?”I sneered. “If I get bad luck, it’s from being with an ungra

Later, when Jeremy was kicked out of his family and badly injured, I gave up the chance to continue my studies and took a leave from school to care for him.I couldn’t stand the thought of losing someone close to me again. So I worked three jobs, barely having a moment to breathe each day.Eventually, I found a decent position at a hospital and transferred Jeremy there so I could take better care of him. However, everything changed the day Stacy arrived. She came in for an internship. Pampered from birth, a perfect image of grace and privilege, someone like that naturally stood out among ordinary people like us.From the moment Jeremy saw her, he couldn’t take his eyes off her. Even after he was discharged, he kept coming back to the hospital just to see her.I still remember that on her birthday, Jeremy bought her a five-thousand-dollar necklace using my money. One of my coworkers asked me, “Jeremy looks healthy enough to me. Why isn’t he working? Why’s he still spending your

I didn’t understand what Marcus meant until that night, when the butler came to find me.Marcus wasn’t feeling well and needed me to check up on him.I hesitated for a moment, puzzled. Still, I was his personal healer now. This was part of my job. When I knocked on his door, a deep voice came from inside. “Come in.”I pushed the door open only to find Marcus with his lean upper body bare, a towel slung low around his waist. Water still dripped from his damp hair, running down over the hard lines of his chest and abs.I stared for a moment, completely still. As a medical professional, I’d seen plenty of bodies before, but never one built quite like his. His muscles were precise and defined, and his V-line chiseled to perfection.Marcus noticed my gaze and smirked faintly. “Enjoying the view?”Heat rushed to my face before I could stop it.He laughed softly. “Didn’t you date Jeremy for five years? How are you still so innocent?”I suddenly felt very small. “He never let me

Marcus nodded and gestured toward the girl beside him. “This is Kate. I actually—”Before he could finish, Kate suddenly looped her arm through mine. “I know who you are! You’re Marcus’ girlfriend.”I froze for a moment. “No, I think you’ve got the wrong person.”Sure, Marcus and I had a past. However, that was years ago. At most, I was his ex.“No way I’d mistake you. Marcus’ phone wallpaper has been your picture for seven years. He’s never changed it! Grace, right? He talks about you all the time.” Kate laughed. I didn’t know what to be more shocked by—the fact that he still had my photo after all these years, or that he openly told people I was his girlfriend.Jeremy and I had been together for five years. Not once did he ever hold my hand in public, and there wasn’t a single picture of us on his phone. Still, I gave him everything I had because I believed being his girlfriend meant taking responsibility for him. However, when Jeremy was brought back to Alpha’s family,

Just as I was about to leave, a tiny hand tugged on the corner of my coat.I turned around. The little boy was standing there, staring up at me with wide eyes. His lips trembled for a long time before he whispered, “Thank you.”Maybe it was because I knew what it felt like to be abandoned, but something in me felt for him. From that day on, I started dividing my breakfast into three parts—one for the stray dog, one for the boy, and a small piece of dry bread for myself.Sometimes we’d go out on the streets together, picking up recyclables to buy dog food.Unlike everyone else, he never feared me. Even when I worked on my skull models, he’d just look at them in awe and say, “That’s so cool!”Over time, we became friends. He didn’t know his own name, so I started calling him “Spud”.After all, he was always covered in dirt, like a little potato freshly dug out of the ground.Years passed. He found a job washing dishes at a restaurant and finally left the streets behind. I was
