Chapter 3

Author: That's All
I walked into the classroom and started handing out the tests. The guys gathered around Yale scattered the second they saw me.

When I reached his desk, I noticed a fresh cut across the back of his hand.

Before, I would have immediately asked what happened. Then, during break, I would have gone to the nurse's office for some antiseptic and cotton swabs and casually left them on his desk as if it were no big deal.

He usually didn't use them. He'd just shove them into his desk along with the rest of his messy books.

This time, I simply held out his test.

"Yours."

Yale looked up at me, his dark eyes carrying their usual cool detachment.

I didn't stop. I moved on to the next desk and kept handing out papers.

At lunch, I went to the cafeteria. A few girls ahead of me in line were talking.

"Didn't Xandra go to the office with Yale yesterday?"

"Yeah. I heard she's applying through Southern University's early admissions program, and Yale's been asking about their admissions requirements lately."

"Seriously? With his grades, can he even get in?"

"That's what Zoe Shaw is for."

They burst out laughing. Then another girl lowered her voice.

"Do you think Zoe likes Yale? She's always bending over backward to give him her notes."

"Obviously. Who would go to all that trouble if she didn't?"

"She should at least look in the mirror and ask herself if she's even in his league."

"Exactly. Talk about reaching way out of your league."

I stood behind them with my tray in my hands.

The cafeteria was packed and noisy, but somehow I heard every word.

Out of his league.

So that was how everyone saw Yale and me.

The line moved quickly, and soon it was my turn.

The lunch lady looked at me. "What'll you have?"

I was about to answer when two people walked into the cafeteria.

Yale and Xandra.

Xandra wore a white dress and had her backpack and several study guides bundled in her arms. She said something I couldn't hear, and Yale looked down at her.

Then he reached over and took her backpack.

Xandra looked up at him and smiled.

For a moment, all the noise around me seemed to fade away. The only thing I could hear clearly was what people had been saying earlier.

Yale and Xandra were perfect together.

The lunch lady waited, then asked again, "What'll you have?"

I snapped back to myself and pointed at two dishes at random. "Those two. To go, please."

That night, when I got home, I pulled the notebooks out of my backpack one by one.

Math. Physics. English. Chemistry.

Every one of them was filled from cover to cover. Some sections were marked in red, while others had sticky notes attached.

On those notes were reminders I'd written for Yale, along with the occasional reply he'd left me.

[This concept is definitely going to be on the test. You got it wrong last time.]

Yale had written back:

[Okay.]

[Memorize the trig formulas.]

[Got it.]

[You can memorize this structure for English essays. It's an easy way to pick up points.]

Under that one, Yale had written six dots before adding:

[You nag too much.]

There were hundreds of sticky notes.

And somehow, those handful of words from him had been enough to keep me writing them for three years.

I peeled the notes off one by one. By the time I finished, a pile of crumpled paper covered my desk.

Without hesitating, I swept all of it into the trash.

Over the next few days, I stopped lending Yale my notes.

He never asked why.

He still walked into class right before the bell. Still borrowed tests from the guy beside him. Still stood up whenever a teacher called on him and said, "I don't know."

It was as if all those days he'd spent borrowing my notes had never happened.

Friday afternoon, Xandra suddenly appeared at our classroom door.

Someone immediately called out with a laugh, "Yale, the prettiest girl in school is here for you."

Again he nodded."I know."I went on. "And I don't know if I still like you."His throat moved as he swallowed."Okay."Looking at him, I felt some of the hurt I'd been carrying for so long begin to loosen. It wasn't that he hadn't cared. He was just terrible at showing it.But that didn't make any of the pain I'd gone through less real.I didn't want to forgive him that easily. And I definitely wasn't going to hear one long-overdue confession and immediately become the old Zoe again, the girl whose whole world revolved around him."Yale, I have my own life now. New classmates, new friends, new goals."I'm not going to sit around waiting for you to kick my chair anymore."He was quiet for a few seconds. Then he said softly, "Okay.""I won't kick it anymore."I blinked.Looking straight at me, he added with complete seriousness, "I'll learn how to actually say what I mean."Zoe. like you."I've liked you for a long time."And the studying..."That wasn't for Xandra."I was trying to get

"I only found out later."I wanted to call you."But I didn't have your number."I stared at him.It suddenly occurred to me that after three years as classmates, Yale and I had never actually exchanged phone numbers.Even at our closest, all we'd ever had were notebooks passed back and forth between the desk in front and the one behind it.We'd never even had a reason to contact each other that we could openly admit to.Yale went on. "I applied to a school in Capital City.""What?""A university near Capital University."He paused, looking slightly uncomfortable."My score wasn't high enough for Capital."But it's close to you."My chest suddenly ached."Weren't you trying to get into Southern University?"Yale frowned. "Who told you that?"I looked at him.Something seemed to click, and his expression cooled."That post?"I didn't answer. After a moment, he said, "I was looking up Southern University because you kept putting together information about it around that time.""I thought

But even if it was true, what difference did it make? That ship had already sailed. I was still staring at my phone when my roommate pushed open the door."Zoe!"I looked up. "What?"She gave me a knowing grin. "There's a really hot guy downstairs asking for you.""Like, seriously hot.""The cold, aloof type."My heart lurched.Still holding my phone, I made my way downstairs. Two rows of ginkgo trees lined the entrance to our dorm. It was late fall, and golden leaves carpeted the ground, like pieces of the past spread out beneath my feet.A guy stood under one of the trees in a black jacket, his shoulders straight. His hair was a little shorter than it had been in high school, but his features still had that same cool, distant look. The moment he saw me, though, some of the tension left his face.It was Yale.I stopped on the steps instead of going straight to him.He didn't come any closer either. We stood several feet apart, looking at each other. After a long while, he spoke first

My younger cousin had just started her freshman year of high school. Her grades were good; she was just careless sometimes. When she saw me pull a stack of notebooks off the bookshelf, her eyes lit up."Are those all your notes?""Yeah." I carried the stack over to her. "Do you want them?"She stared at me. "All of them?"I nodded. "I won't need my high school notes anymore. There are topic summaries and problems I got wrong in there. Just use whatever helps."She looked ready to throw her arms around me."Zoe, you're literally my hero!"I laughed. Those notebooks had once meant a lot to me, especially a few of them. Every problem, every mark I'd made had once had something to do with Yale. Now I placed them into the box one by one, as if I were packing away those feelings with them. The next day, I left for Capital University.College kept me busy. Classes, clubs, the library, my part-time job. I met new roommates and plenty of people who were every bit as accomplished as the students

My phone suddenly rang.It was my homeroom teacher. For some reason, my palm tightened as I answered."Ms. Lewis.""Zoe! The scores are out!" She sounded even more excited than I was. "You did really well. Extremely well. With this score, Capital University won't be a problem."A breeze drifted through the flower beds around the apartment complex, carrying the smell of grass and dinner.I held the phone without speaking for a long moment.Grandma looked over. "What is it, Zoe?"I looked up at her, my eyes suddenly stinging."Grandma, I can go to Capital University."She froze for a second, then smiled so widely that the wrinkles around her eyes bunched together."Good. That's wonderful."Our Zoe has done well for herself."That night, Mom cried on the phone. She tried to keep it quiet, as if she didn't want me to hear, but I heard her anyway."Zoe, I'm so proud of you."I cried too.Not because I was sad.But because I finally knew that everything I'd done to get here hadn't been for n

Today, Xandra had her hair pulled into a high ponytail, her uniform neat and tidy. She was pretty enough to stand out immediately. The people around us started teasing the moment they saw her."Look, the It girl's here.""She's here for Yale, right?""One last cute moment before graduation?"I lowered my head and straightened my cuff.Xandra walked up to Yale. She wasn't speaking loudly, but everyone around them had gone so quiet that I could still hear her."Yale, after we're done with the class photo, want to take one together?"Someone whistled.Yale stood with the other boys, his expression indifferent. He glanced at Xandra, then said simply, "No."Just one word, with no room for negotiation. The smile on Xandra's face froze, and the teasing around them died down almost instantly. She clearly hadn't expected him to turn her down in front of so many people. After a few seconds, she forced a smile."Why?"Yale lowered his eyes. "There's no reason to."Xandra went a little pale. She s
