Chapter 4

Author: That's All
Yale had been sprawled over his desk. He only looked up when someone called his name.

Xandra, however, didn't go to him first. She walked straight over to my desk.

"Zoe, could I borrow your math notes?"

I looked up at her.

"Yale said yours are the easiest to understand. His grades have improved a lot lately, so thank you."

Thank you.

She said it so naturally, as if she were thanking me on Yale's behalf.

I closed my textbook. "Sorry. I don't have them with me."

The classroom went quiet for a few seconds before someone in the back muttered, "She can't even lend them out? That's kind of petty."

"I heard she only ever let Yale borrow them before."

"God, what a simp."

A chair suddenly scraped hard against the floor behind me.

Yale stood up. "Move. I'm going out."

The guy beside him hurriedly got out of the way. Yale didn't look at anyone as he walked straight out of the classroom.

Xandra watched him leave before turning back to me. She smiled.

"I'll ask you again next time, then."

Then, almost as an afterthought, she added, "Oh, and thank you for the Southern University notes too. They're really thorough. I found them super helpful."

My fingers went still.

"What?"

Xandra blinked. "The blue notebook Yale has."

"You put together the admission scores from the past few years, rankings, and breakdowns of the different majors."

For a moment, my mind went completely blank.

The blue notebook.

I'd stayed up for three nights putting it together for Yale: five years of Southern University's admission cutoffs, its strongest majors, and a breakdown of the scores he'd need to aim for.

On the very last page, I'd even drawn a tiny smiley face and written carefully beside it:

[You can do it, Yale.]

I'd thought he would see it.

Instead, he'd given the notebook to Xandra.

I opened my textbook again and stopped looking at anyone.

"You don't have to thank me.

"If you find it useful, go ahead and use it."

This time, Xandra didn't smile. She studied me for a few seconds before finally saying, "Okay."

Then she turned and left.

Later, during the long break, I came back from the field and Quentin Zane, our class president, called me over.

He handed back my notebook, then passed me a bottle of yogurt.

"No wonder even Yale's grades went up after reading your notes. Your section on derivatives is ridiculously detailed. I understood it right away."

I pushed the yogurt back toward him. "You don't have to."

Quentin grinned. "Come on. Consider it payment for the tutoring."

I was about to refuse again, but he'd already gone back to his seat, so I set the yogurt on the corner of my desk.

I had just started to sit down when a familiar voice came from behind me.

"You lent him your notes?"

Yale was leaning against the classroom doorway.

I had no idea how long he'd been standing there. His eyes were fixed on the notebook in my hand, the one with the pale green cover and the worn corner at the bottom.

It used to be his alone.

I ignored him, sat down, and slipped the notebook into my desk.

The seat behind me stayed unusually quiet for the rest of the day.

After school, I stayed behind for cleaning duty. Jade had already left, leaving me alone in the classroom.

I finished wiping down the board, then bent to pick up a few broken pieces of chalk from the floor.

Just as I straightened, I heard footsteps behind me.

Yale had come back at some point.

He stood by the rear door with his uniform jacket slung over one shoulder, his hair slightly mussed from the wind.

I glanced at him, picked up my backpack, and headed for the door.

As I passed him, he stepped sideways and blocked my path.

"Zoe."

I looked up at him.

He hesitated for two seconds before asking, "Have you been mad at me lately?"

Again he nodded."I know."I went on. "And I don't know if I still like you."His throat moved as he swallowed."Okay."Looking at him, I felt some of the hurt I'd been carrying for so long begin to loosen. It wasn't that he hadn't cared. He was just terrible at showing it.But that didn't make any of the pain I'd gone through less real.I didn't want to forgive him that easily. And I definitely wasn't going to hear one long-overdue confession and immediately become the old Zoe again, the girl whose whole world revolved around him."Yale, I have my own life now. New classmates, new friends, new goals."I'm not going to sit around waiting for you to kick my chair anymore."He was quiet for a few seconds. Then he said softly, "Okay.""I won't kick it anymore."I blinked.Looking straight at me, he added with complete seriousness, "I'll learn how to actually say what I mean."Zoe. like you."I've liked you for a long time."And the studying..."That wasn't for Xandra."I was trying to get

"I only found out later."I wanted to call you."But I didn't have your number."I stared at him.It suddenly occurred to me that after three years as classmates, Yale and I had never actually exchanged phone numbers.Even at our closest, all we'd ever had were notebooks passed back and forth between the desk in front and the one behind it.We'd never even had a reason to contact each other that we could openly admit to.Yale went on. "I applied to a school in Capital City.""What?""A university near Capital University."He paused, looking slightly uncomfortable."My score wasn't high enough for Capital."But it's close to you."My chest suddenly ached."Weren't you trying to get into Southern University?"Yale frowned. "Who told you that?"I looked at him.Something seemed to click, and his expression cooled."That post?"I didn't answer. After a moment, he said, "I was looking up Southern University because you kept putting together information about it around that time.""I thought

But even if it was true, what difference did it make? That ship had already sailed. I was still staring at my phone when my roommate pushed open the door."Zoe!"I looked up. "What?"She gave me a knowing grin. "There's a really hot guy downstairs asking for you.""Like, seriously hot.""The cold, aloof type."My heart lurched.Still holding my phone, I made my way downstairs. Two rows of ginkgo trees lined the entrance to our dorm. It was late fall, and golden leaves carpeted the ground, like pieces of the past spread out beneath my feet.A guy stood under one of the trees in a black jacket, his shoulders straight. His hair was a little shorter than it had been in high school, but his features still had that same cool, distant look. The moment he saw me, though, some of the tension left his face.It was Yale.I stopped on the steps instead of going straight to him.He didn't come any closer either. We stood several feet apart, looking at each other. After a long while, he spoke first

My younger cousin had just started her freshman year of high school. Her grades were good; she was just careless sometimes. When she saw me pull a stack of notebooks off the bookshelf, her eyes lit up."Are those all your notes?""Yeah." I carried the stack over to her. "Do you want them?"She stared at me. "All of them?"I nodded. "I won't need my high school notes anymore. There are topic summaries and problems I got wrong in there. Just use whatever helps."She looked ready to throw her arms around me."Zoe, you're literally my hero!"I laughed. Those notebooks had once meant a lot to me, especially a few of them. Every problem, every mark I'd made had once had something to do with Yale. Now I placed them into the box one by one, as if I were packing away those feelings with them. The next day, I left for Capital University.College kept me busy. Classes, clubs, the library, my part-time job. I met new roommates and plenty of people who were every bit as accomplished as the students

My phone suddenly rang.It was my homeroom teacher. For some reason, my palm tightened as I answered."Ms. Lewis.""Zoe! The scores are out!" She sounded even more excited than I was. "You did really well. Extremely well. With this score, Capital University won't be a problem."A breeze drifted through the flower beds around the apartment complex, carrying the smell of grass and dinner.I held the phone without speaking for a long moment.Grandma looked over. "What is it, Zoe?"I looked up at her, my eyes suddenly stinging."Grandma, I can go to Capital University."She froze for a second, then smiled so widely that the wrinkles around her eyes bunched together."Good. That's wonderful."Our Zoe has done well for herself."That night, Mom cried on the phone. She tried to keep it quiet, as if she didn't want me to hear, but I heard her anyway."Zoe, I'm so proud of you."I cried too.Not because I was sad.But because I finally knew that everything I'd done to get here hadn't been for n

Today, Xandra had her hair pulled into a high ponytail, her uniform neat and tidy. She was pretty enough to stand out immediately. The people around us started teasing the moment they saw her."Look, the It girl's here.""She's here for Yale, right?""One last cute moment before graduation?"I lowered my head and straightened my cuff.Xandra walked up to Yale. She wasn't speaking loudly, but everyone around them had gone so quiet that I could still hear her."Yale, after we're done with the class photo, want to take one together?"Someone whistled.Yale stood with the other boys, his expression indifferent. He glanced at Xandra, then said simply, "No."Just one word, with no room for negotiation. The smile on Xandra's face froze, and the teasing around them died down almost instantly. She clearly hadn't expected him to turn her down in front of so many people. After a few seconds, she forced a smile."Why?"Yale lowered his eyes. "There's no reason to."Xandra went a little pale. She s
