Chapter 2

Autor: Ophelia
For the entire time at the academy, Charles had almost never come to find me first.

So yesterday, when he suddenly said he'd go with me to register as training partners, I was happy for hours.

That night, I spent ages picking out what to wear for registration day.

Before bed, I couldn't stop imagining what it would be like, training side by side.

But in the end, he didn't stay to finish the college application with me. He didn't wait for me at the banquet.

And he'd registered with Annie instead.

I stood there, and the little spark of hope I'd been carrying felt like someone had ground it under their heel. I couldn't recover for a long time.

The instructor was still flipping through her records, talking casually.

"Charles and Annie, those two really are impressive."

"They've been ranking near the top in the last few combat assessments. I hear they're applying to the same academy. They practice together all the time."

She smiled.

"They really do look good together."

That last line went through me like a thin needle.

I forced the corners of my mouth up. "Do they?"

The instructor didn't notice anything off. She even threw in a compliment. "It's pretty impressive that you've known them since childhood though."

"Although you seem like... you're not exactly on the same path as them."

I didn't answer. I just looked down, gripped the training booklet tighter, turned, and walked away.

I thought I'd gotten used to this feeling by now.

But walking out of the training grounds, the shame hit me harder than I expected.

To keep up with Charles, I'd put in more effort than anyone.

Other people could rest after one round of training. I'd stay until deep into the night. Courses that everyone else considered sufficient, I'd go back and have the instructor teach me again from scratch.

Because I knew my talent wasn't exceptional. So the only option was to work harder than everyone else.

This past year, I barely had a single full night of sleep.

I thought that if I just kept chasing, someday I'd catch up and stand where he was.

Now it was looking like I was the only one who ever took that seriously.

I called a school car and went to the banquet hall alone.

When I got there, I realized it was nothing like what Charles had said about everyone being there. The hall was mostly empty. Just a handful of people scattered around.

When I walked in, Charles and Annie were sitting by the window.

They were both hunched over, studying some kind of wolf crest badge. Annie said something, and Charles suddenly laughed.

It was relaxed. Easy. A smile I hadn't seen from him in a long time.

"Lilith?"

He heard the door and looked up.

The next second, he waved me over, same as always.

"What are you standing there for? Come sit."

I hesitated. But I walked over anyway.

Some habits don't break just because you want them to.

Even after being left behind moments ago, one word from him and my legs carried me to his side.

The second I sat down, a few classmates nearby noticed us.

One of the guys looked at me, then at Annie, and grinned.

"You three have been inseparable since freshman year. I honestly thought it'd stay that way forever."

Another one piled on.

"It's getting interesting though. Charles and Annie train together every day. Lilith's always trailing behind by herself."

The group cracked up.

Charles didn't seem to notice anything was off. He reached one arm around Annie's shoulder, and with the other, casually draped his arm over mine.

"She's always been like this. Slow at everything."

"And she's too soft. Her wolf spirit's unstable too. If she ends up at a different academy from me and Annie, I'd honestly worry about her."

He said it like it was the most ordinary observation in the world.

Annie picked up right where he left off.

"You know how she is. This past six months, she's thrown every minute into training just to keep up with us."

"Remember when she couldn't even do basic wolf spirit control? Then she started going to the instructor for extra sessions every single day, just so she wouldn't hold us back."

She said it like she was sticking up for me. Her tone even carried a kind of familiar warmth.

But after she finished, someone was already laughing.

"That dedicated?"

"I thought she was just lucky to be hanging around you two."

Another classmate let out a knowing chuckle.

"Am I the only one who thinks the person Charles actually wants to protect isn't Lilith?"

The air went still for a beat.

Charles instinctively glanced at me.

It was a quick look. But in that fraction of a second, I understood everything.

Because what I saw in his eyes wasn't surprise. It wasn't denial. It was the brief, panicked look of someone whose secret had just been touched.

The next moment, the teasing erupted.

"So they've been together this whole time? Then what does that make Lilith?"

"Ha, she's been trailing after Charles for years. She's basically just a simp."

"Those two are a couple, and she still insists on squeezing herself in the middle. It's honestly pathetic."

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 10

A month later, the official acceptance letter from Shadowfang Academy arrived. After the letter came, I started packing, getting ready to leave for the new university. The day before I was set to complete my withdrawal paperwork, Charles found me.I'd just walked out of the training hall and there he was, standing at the entrance. He looked much worse than before. Dark circles under his eyes, a document in his hand."Lilith, I need to talk to you."I didn't slow down. "I don't want to hear it."Charles caught up, his voice urgent beside me."I know you don't want to listen to my excuses anymore, but I still want you to know. Everything that hurt you before, I've figured it all out."He held out the document."Annie admitted it. She really did create situations on purpose, to pull me away. She knew I'd worry about her, and she knew I always assumed you wouldn't mind. So she just kept..."He didn't finish.Because even he found the words too shameful to say out loud.I glanced at the doc

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 9

Annie never expected Charles to turn her down in front of that many people. What she found even harder to accept was that after returning to the academy, Charles actually started asking the people around him about Lilith's past.He went to their old training instructors. He pulled up Lilith's training records. And he finally discovered that many of the things he'd always thought were just coincidences had Annie's fingerprints all over them.Once, he'd promised to go with Lilith for her wolf spirit control training. But that morning, Annie had suddenly called, saying she'd been hurt during a combat exercise and needed someone to take her to the treatment center.Charles had gone immediately. It wasn't until that evening that he remembered Lilith. When he messaged her, she just said training was over and told him not to worry. At the time, he'd assumed Lilith had just been unlucky. He never imagined that the instructor would later tell him Lilith had lost control of her wolf spirit durin

After finishing the challenge, I went straight back to the academy to start preparing for graduation. After the ceremony, someone called out from behind me. "Lilith."I stopped and turned around. It was Charles."What is it?""I want to talk to you."I glanced at the time."I have something in ten minutes.""Ten minutes is fine."I hesitated, then told my teammates to head to the dining hall without me.Charles looked at me. His voice was a little rough. "I withdrew from the Moon Bay practicum.""That has nothing to do with me."I turned to leave."Lilith!"Charles called after me, urgent. "Don't you have anything you want to ask me?"I stopped and looked at him, really looked at him."No.""But I want to know how you've been.""I've been great.""You didn't used to be like this."The words fell out of him almost involuntarily."You used to tell me everything. What happened during training, who you ran into at lunch, what time you got back to the dorm at night. You told me all of it."

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 7

Charles discovered the next morning that he could no longer reach Lilith. He sent her messages first, then tried calling. The calls never went through. He went to check her social media and found she'd posted a photo of herself completing the challenge. The silver badge gleamed in the sunlight. There were already quite a few congratulatory comments underneath, including several freshmen from Nightshade Academy, enthusiastically inviting her to join their training group after enrollment.Charles read those comments, and an unfamiliar unease stirred inside him. He'd always known Lilith worked hard. But he'd never truly considered that she could go this far without him. Before, all he had to do was look back and she'd be there. But now, she'd gone somewhere he wasn't. Met new people. Completed a promise that had once belonged only to the two of them.He was finding out about her achievements from social media."Charles, are you still looking at her stuff?"Annie's expression was already s

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 6

After the plane landed, I didn't turn my phone on right away.It wasn't until I'd arrived at the Aurora Peak training base and finished checking in that I reconnected to the network. The moment my screen lit up, dozens of unread messages flooded in, almost all of them from Charles.Lilith, where are you?Why aren't you picking up?Did you really go to Aurora Peak by yourself? The last message had been sent ten minutes ago.I know you're still upset, but at least tell me you got there safe. Before, every time I went anywhere, I'd send Charles my destination ahead of time. I'd even tell him what time I expected to arrive. Not because he asked me to. Because I was afraid he'd worry. But now, I didn't feel like reporting my whereabouts to him anymore.I slipped my phone into my pocket, shouldered my gear, and followed the staff to pick up my challenge equipment. The training camp was built at the base of the mountain range, surrounded by apartments and supply stations for the participants.

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 5

Charles was quiet for a moment. Then he leaned close and spoke low."Lilith, don't read into it.""We didn't tell you about this beforehand because we weren't trying to leave you out.""You've always hated long trips, right? And this retreat involves crossing the northern mountains. That'd be way too hard on your wolf spirit."He sounded sincere. Like he was only thinking of me."When there's a better chance, I'll take you somewhere else. Just the two of us.""Once we're both settled at our new schools, we'll have plenty of breaks."He looked at me, eyes almost hopeful.I looked back at him. The words I'd been burying for so long finally reached the tip of my tongue."Charles, actually I...""Charles!"Annie's voice cut through from the other side. She hurried over, phone in hand."Did you see our training booklet? I've been looking everywhere. It's got all our practice records in it."She grabbed his wrist."Come help me look? Please?"Before I could pull the booklet out of my bag, An
