Chapter 3

Autor: Ophelia
My cheeks burned. Even my fingertips went cold from the embarrassment.

Their laughter was still ringing. I kept my head down, not knowing where to look.

Charles finally seemed to realize the joke had gone too far. He set his glass down hard on the table.

"Enough."

He frowned at the group. "We grew up together. We're close friends. Stop making it into something it's not."

"Oh, just friends." Kevin dragged the words out on purpose. More laughter.

Annie jumped in to smooth things over.

"Come on, quit it. My family's always said no dating until I'm officially in college."

She probably meant to deflect, but it only made them more excited.

"Perfect timing then. You're about to graduate."

"Charles, you've been holding this in for years. You're really gonna keep pretending?"

"Tonight's your last shot. Miss this and who knows when you'll get another chance."

The group got louder. Charles didn't take the bait.

I sat there trying to look normal, but my heart was pounding harder and harder.

Then someone turned to me.

"Lilith, how come you're not laughing?"

"If Charles and Annie really got together, you wouldn't be upset, would you?"

My mind went completely blank.

Before I could figure out what to say, a girl next to Annie was already smiling.

"A real friend would be happy for her best friend, right?"

"Lilith, don't you think?"

Every eye in the room landed on me.

I gripped the hem of my shirt. In the end, I pulled out a smile.

"Of course."

"If they really like each other, I'd be happy for them."

The second those words left my mouth, the air around me felt heavier.

Charles glanced at me. His expression went strangely dark.

"I'm not going to talk about this here."

His voice was stiff.

"Besides, there's nothing between me and Annie."

A flicker of hurt crossed Annie's eyes, but she recovered quickly and smiled.

"Okay, okay, drop it."

She picked up the menu from the table and redirected the conversation.

"It's graduation dinner. Order whatever you want."

The menu made its way around. When it reached me, I barely touched it before Annie pulled it from my hands.

"I'll handle it."

She smiled at me.

"You take forever picking. By the time you decide, everyone will have starved."

Then she tilted the menu toward Charles.

"Let's look together. I remember Lilith used to love the moon-pepper roast."

Charles nodded.

"And a silver moonberry wine."

"Plus the wolfroot stew."

The moment I heard those last two words, my smile froze.

That used to be my favorite dish.

But I hadn't had it in a long time.

Because two months ago, after a wolf spirit episode, I had a severe reaction. The academy healer told me very clearly that I couldn't touch wolfroot for a while. It could trigger another destabilization.

Charles knew. He'd been there when the healer said it. He'd even walked me to the treatment room himself.

But now he'd ordered it without a second thought.

"That should do it."

He closed the menu, ready to pass it on.

I looked at his profile and my mind drifted back to that day.

My wolf spirit had suddenly gone haywire. The pain was so bad I could barely stand. I'd wanted Charles to come with me to the healer.

But I was a little slow getting downstairs.

By the time I made it to the academy's back gate, he and Annie had already driven off.

When I asked him later why he didn't wait, he'd looked at me like I was being ridiculous.

"You could still walk, couldn't you?"

"If it was really that serious, you would've come down sooner."

He said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

I stood there that day, and for the first time, I didn't know how to tell him.

Sometimes it's not that I don't need you.

It's that I'm so scared of being a burden that I keep telling myself I can hold on a little longer.

"Oh my God!"

A shout yanked me back to the present.

A classmate nearby had pulled up the academy forum on his phone, buzzing with excitement over something just posted.

"Check it out! The last two VIP seats for tonight's Moon Festival just got claimed!"

"Who got them?"

"Charles and Annie!"

The table erupted.

I looked up without thinking.

On the screen, two VIP medallions engraved with the moon crest were displayed side by side.

In that moment, I went completely still.

Because just a few days ago, Charles had promised me that before graduation, he'd take me to my first Moon Festival.

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 10

A month later, the official acceptance letter from Shadowfang Academy arrived. After the letter came, I started packing, getting ready to leave for the new university. The day before I was set to complete my withdrawal paperwork, Charles found me.I'd just walked out of the training hall and there he was, standing at the entrance. He looked much worse than before. Dark circles under his eyes, a document in his hand."Lilith, I need to talk to you."I didn't slow down. "I don't want to hear it."Charles caught up, his voice urgent beside me."I know you don't want to listen to my excuses anymore, but I still want you to know. Everything that hurt you before, I've figured it all out."He held out the document."Annie admitted it. She really did create situations on purpose, to pull me away. She knew I'd worry about her, and she knew I always assumed you wouldn't mind. So she just kept..."He didn't finish.Because even he found the words too shameful to say out loud.I glanced at the doc

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 9

Annie never expected Charles to turn her down in front of that many people. What she found even harder to accept was that after returning to the academy, Charles actually started asking the people around him about Lilith's past.He went to their old training instructors. He pulled up Lilith's training records. And he finally discovered that many of the things he'd always thought were just coincidences had Annie's fingerprints all over them.Once, he'd promised to go with Lilith for her wolf spirit control training. But that morning, Annie had suddenly called, saying she'd been hurt during a combat exercise and needed someone to take her to the treatment center.Charles had gone immediately. It wasn't until that evening that he remembered Lilith. When he messaged her, she just said training was over and told him not to worry. At the time, he'd assumed Lilith had just been unlucky. He never imagined that the instructor would later tell him Lilith had lost control of her wolf spirit durin

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 8

After finishing the challenge, I went straight back to the academy to start preparing for graduation. After the ceremony, someone called out from behind me. "Lilith."I stopped and turned around. It was Charles."What is it?""I want to talk to you."I glanced at the time."I have something in ten minutes.""Ten minutes is fine."I hesitated, then told my teammates to head to the dining hall without me.Charles looked at me. His voice was a little rough. "I withdrew from the Moon Bay practicum.""That has nothing to do with me."I turned to leave."Lilith!"Charles called after me, urgent. "Don't you have anything you want to ask me?"I stopped and looked at him, really looked at him."No.""But I want to know how you've been.""I've been great.""You didn't used to be like this."The words fell out of him almost involuntarily."You used to tell me everything. What happened during training, who you ran into at lunch, what time you got back to the dorm at night. You told me all of it."

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 7

Charles discovered the next morning that he could no longer reach Lilith. He sent her messages first, then tried calling. The calls never went through. He went to check her social media and found she'd posted a photo of herself completing the challenge. The silver badge gleamed in the sunlight. There were already quite a few congratulatory comments underneath, including several freshmen from Nightshade Academy, enthusiastically inviting her to join their training group after enrollment.Charles read those comments, and an unfamiliar unease stirred inside him. He'd always known Lilith worked hard. But he'd never truly considered that she could go this far without him. Before, all he had to do was look back and she'd be there. But now, she'd gone somewhere he wasn't. Met new people. Completed a promise that had once belonged only to the two of them.He was finding out about her achievements from social media."Charles, are you still looking at her stuff?"Annie's expression was already s

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 6

After the plane landed, I didn't turn my phone on right away.It wasn't until I'd arrived at the Aurora Peak training base and finished checking in that I reconnected to the network. The moment my screen lit up, dozens of unread messages flooded in, almost all of them from Charles.Lilith, where are you?Why aren't you picking up?Did you really go to Aurora Peak by yourself? The last message had been sent ten minutes ago.I know you're still upset, but at least tell me you got there safe. Before, every time I went anywhere, I'd send Charles my destination ahead of time. I'd even tell him what time I expected to arrive. Not because he asked me to. Because I was afraid he'd worry. But now, I didn't feel like reporting my whereabouts to him anymore.I slipped my phone into my pocket, shouldered my gear, and followed the staff to pick up my challenge equipment. The training camp was built at the base of the mountain range, surrounded by apartments and supply stations for the participants.

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 5

Charles was quiet for a moment. Then he leaned close and spoke low."Lilith, don't read into it.""We didn't tell you about this beforehand because we weren't trying to leave you out.""You've always hated long trips, right? And this retreat involves crossing the northern mountains. That'd be way too hard on your wolf spirit."He sounded sincere. Like he was only thinking of me."When there's a better chance, I'll take you somewhere else. Just the two of us.""Once we're both settled at our new schools, we'll have plenty of breaks."He looked at me, eyes almost hopeful.I looked back at him. The words I'd been burying for so long finally reached the tip of my tongue."Charles, actually I...""Charles!"Annie's voice cut through from the other side. She hurried over, phone in hand."Did you see our training booklet? I've been looking everywhere. It's got all our practice records in it."She grabbed his wrist."Come help me look? Please?"Before I could pull the booklet out of my bag, An
