Chapter 1

When I submitted my college application, there was less than a minute left before the deadline.

One click of the confirm button, and my training path for the next four years would be locked in.

My finger hovered over the button. I couldn't bring it down.

If I chose a different academy than Charles, we'd end up territories apart.

The thought of spending the next four years without training together the way we always had made my chest ache before I could stop it.

But before that ache could settle, my phone lit up.

Charles's voice came through, laced with obvious impatience.

"Lilith, are you still not ready? The academy's Moon Night banquet is about to start."

"Kevin and the others are already at the front gate. Everyone's here. If you keep dragging your feet, you'll miss the first round."

I shot to my feet, shoved everything on my desk into my bag without looking, didn't even confirm my college application, and ran toward the school entrance.

The academy corridor was long. I sprinted down the stone steps and my foot caught on one of them in the rush.

My knee slammed into the edge. The skin split open on impact.

The pain made me freeze for a second, but then I thought about them waiting. I didn't even look down at the wound. I clenched my teeth and kept running.

By the time I made it through the corridor to the plaza, the school driver was already doing a headcount.

Charles was standing in the group. Annie was right beside him.

I exhaled with relief and ran toward them.

But just as I was about to reach them, the driver had already turned and climbed into the vehicle. He was about to close the door.

"Wait!" I shouted.

From a distance, Charles seemed to hear me. He turned and glanced back.

But the next second, Annie said something to him, and he looked away.

The bus started moving. The headlights swept past. Their figures disappeared.

The screen light faded. I stood there, rooted to the spot, barely able to breathe.

Again. They always said they'd wait. But every single time, I'd get left behind at the very last second.

The Moon Lake trial. The academy night hunt, where I got stuck at the edge of the barrier and they didn't even notice I wasn't behind them.

This time too. All he had to do was tell the driver I wasn't on board yet. Just one more minute.

But he said nothing.

As long as I was a little slow, they never looked back.

But those one or two minutes. Were they really that important?

I couldn't figure it out.

The questions jammed in my throat and never made it out. All that was left was a bitterness that kept getting thicker.

"Excuse me, just a moment."

I was still standing at the gate, dazed, when an instructor stopped me.

She was holding a slim training booklet. She held it out.

"You're Charles's friend, right? He left this at the front gate. I was going to wait for him to come back, but they probably won't be returning tonight."

I took the booklet and flipped through it without thinking.

It was the academy's training partner registry.

Charles's name was listed inside.

But the name that made my fingers go rigid was the one right next to his.

Annie.

They'd already registered as official training partners.

I stared at those two names for a long time. The ache in my chest came flooding back.

Because just yesterday, Charles had smiled and told me:

"Lilith, once college apps are done, let's go register as training partners together."

"Your wolf spirit's always been a little unstable. I can train with you. We'll take it slow."

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 10

A month later, the official acceptance letter from Shadowfang Academy arrived. After the letter came, I started packing, getting ready to leave for the new university. The day before I was set to complete my withdrawal paperwork, Charles found me.I'd just walked out of the training hall and there he was, standing at the entrance. He looked much worse than before. Dark circles under his eyes, a document in his hand."Lilith, I need to talk to you."I didn't slow down. "I don't want to hear it."Charles caught up, his voice urgent beside me."I know you don't want to listen to my excuses anymore, but I still want you to know. Everything that hurt you before, I've figured it all out."He held out the document."Annie admitted it. She really did create situations on purpose, to pull me away. She knew I'd worry about her, and she knew I always assumed you wouldn't mind. So she just kept..."He didn't finish.Because even he found the words too shameful to say out loud.I glanced at the doc

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 9

Annie never expected Charles to turn her down in front of that many people. What she found even harder to accept was that after returning to the academy, Charles actually started asking the people around him about Lilith's past.He went to their old training instructors. He pulled up Lilith's training records. And he finally discovered that many of the things he'd always thought were just coincidences had Annie's fingerprints all over them.Once, he'd promised to go with Lilith for her wolf spirit control training. But that morning, Annie had suddenly called, saying she'd been hurt during a combat exercise and needed someone to take her to the treatment center.Charles had gone immediately. It wasn't until that evening that he remembered Lilith. When he messaged her, she just said training was over and told him not to worry. At the time, he'd assumed Lilith had just been unlucky. He never imagined that the instructor would later tell him Lilith had lost control of her wolf spirit durin

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 8

After finishing the challenge, I went straight back to the academy to start preparing for graduation. After the ceremony, someone called out from behind me. "Lilith."I stopped and turned around. It was Charles."What is it?""I want to talk to you."I glanced at the time."I have something in ten minutes.""Ten minutes is fine."I hesitated, then told my teammates to head to the dining hall without me.Charles looked at me. His voice was a little rough. "I withdrew from the Moon Bay practicum.""That has nothing to do with me."I turned to leave."Lilith!"Charles called after me, urgent. "Don't you have anything you want to ask me?"I stopped and looked at him, really looked at him."No.""But I want to know how you've been.""I've been great.""You didn't used to be like this."The words fell out of him almost involuntarily."You used to tell me everything. What happened during training, who you ran into at lunch, what time you got back to the dorm at night. You told me all of it."

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 7

Charles discovered the next morning that he could no longer reach Lilith. He sent her messages first, then tried calling. The calls never went through. He went to check her social media and found she'd posted a photo of herself completing the challenge. The silver badge gleamed in the sunlight. There were already quite a few congratulatory comments underneath, including several freshmen from Nightshade Academy, enthusiastically inviting her to join their training group after enrollment.Charles read those comments, and an unfamiliar unease stirred inside him. He'd always known Lilith worked hard. But he'd never truly considered that she could go this far without him. Before, all he had to do was look back and she'd be there. But now, she'd gone somewhere he wasn't. Met new people. Completed a promise that had once belonged only to the two of them.He was finding out about her achievements from social media."Charles, are you still looking at her stuff?"Annie's expression was already s

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 6

After the plane landed, I didn't turn my phone on right away.It wasn't until I'd arrived at the Aurora Peak training base and finished checking in that I reconnected to the network. The moment my screen lit up, dozens of unread messages flooded in, almost all of them from Charles.Lilith, where are you?Why aren't you picking up?Did you really go to Aurora Peak by yourself? The last message had been sent ten minutes ago.I know you're still upset, but at least tell me you got there safe. Before, every time I went anywhere, I'd send Charles my destination ahead of time. I'd even tell him what time I expected to arrive. Not because he asked me to. Because I was afraid he'd worry. But now, I didn't feel like reporting my whereabouts to him anymore.I slipped my phone into my pocket, shouldered my gear, and followed the staff to pick up my challenge equipment. The training camp was built at the base of the mountain range, surrounded by apartments and supply stations for the participants.

  • My Own Path to Greatness   Chapter 5

Charles was quiet for a moment. Then he leaned close and spoke low."Lilith, don't read into it.""We didn't tell you about this beforehand because we weren't trying to leave you out.""You've always hated long trips, right? And this retreat involves crossing the northern mountains. That'd be way too hard on your wolf spirit."He sounded sincere. Like he was only thinking of me."When there's a better chance, I'll take you somewhere else. Just the two of us.""Once we're both settled at our new schools, we'll have plenty of breaks."He looked at me, eyes almost hopeful.I looked back at him. The words I'd been burying for so long finally reached the tip of my tongue."Charles, actually I...""Charles!"Annie's voice cut through from the other side. She hurried over, phone in hand."Did you see our training booklet? I've been looking everywhere. It's got all our practice records in it."She grabbed his wrist."Come help me look? Please?"Before I could pull the booklet out of my bag, An
