Chapter 187

Lessie's POV

That night was one of the longest ever.

I wept until my eyes hurt. I wept until my pillow was wet and my chest was hollow, as if I had been sucked dry of all breath. I wept because the words Dylan said had pierced me like tainted pins and because the harder I attempted to pull them out, the deeper they bit. I hated myself for allowing them in. I hated myself for being a coward enough to listen.

What if it was? What if Alpha Duaine killed my brother?

It frightened me to the very core of my being, even as I steeled myself and balled up on my bed. I recalled Alpha Duaine's tidbits of history, the prince in line after him for the throne, the father who never gave him a moment to himself, the ghost of retribution.

They had fit Dylan's accusations too well, too harshly, into a piece of a puzzle falling into place whether I wanted it or not. And I had discussed it with Alpha Duaine and explained to him that it wasn't his fault. I had promised him that he did not have

Chapter 188Dylan's POVI returned to Nathan's the morning after, trying my best to look as normal and innocence personified as a human could. I had been in disguise, but with every step I took on Duaine's territory, it felt like I was walking on hot embers. Still, I couldn't give up, not when I was this close to flipping things around in my own direction.Nathan was already sitting up, reclining next to his uncle when I entered the room. His face was tense, as if looking at something intense until I came and broke the magic. The moment he noticed me, his jaw tightened."What do you want here again?" he asked, his voice with an edge.I ignored the edge in his voice and stepped in, raking back my hood. "Relax. I was here to ask something simple."Nathan's eyebrows were furrowed. "Get on with it."I walked towards him. "Did Lessie come to see you?"He shook his head once. "No. She hasn't."I clicked my tongue and puffed and walked back and forth in the room. "I met her yesterday. I told

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 186

Chapter 186Duaine's POVSeven hours is a long time when your mind crawls like blood under a skin that won't stop itching.I'd sat in my office and stared at the world out the window because there was nothing else to do. I tried doing paperwork. I tried to listen to reports. I tried to read the names on petitions without meaning to. Everything blurred. My worry for Lessie did not subside. She'd asked to be left alone. I'd given her the space because I'd promised myself to do better, to deserve that trust, yet the promise had teeth that chewed as I waited.Aden came into my office as I had been waiting for him. He was young, good-looking in an open, unassuming way, and he had a loyalty in him that I had valued when I assigned him to Lessie. There had been something plain and steady about Aden that made him suitable for guarding someone like her. I’d thought him reliable. For seven hours I’d thought the worst. He stood before me now, stiff as a post. He had the knuckle scar that the tra

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 185

Chapter 185Duaine's POVI looked about the courtyard with wide eyes, my chest tightening with anxiety. Lessie was nowhere to be seen. Not beneath the shade of trees, not by the benches where she spent most of her days, not even around the training grounds where she would sit sometimes to observe the warriors training. Something was wrong. She should have already been at school, and when I walked into the classroom, her desk was empty. Students were loitering, snickering and talking, her not being in class was not characteristic of her.I caught up with Dave near the outside hallway, his arms across his chest, as he ordered two guards about. "Dave," I called. He turned, his head lowering. "Alpha.""Where is Lessie?" I asked. His brows furrowed. "Lessie? I have not seen her since she came out of your office some time today. I believe she went to her class."My teeth gritted. "She is not there."Dave's usually tranquil face winced for a moment. He straightened, his voice deepened. "The

Chapter 184Lessie's POVI walked home, but I slowly dragged myself back to my room, yet the heaviness of my footsteps was more than ever before. With each step that my foot touched the ground, it felt as if Dylan's words only pulled me down further, falling into a well of uncertainty. The path ahead of me was gone, but I only saw fragments of his voice repeating in my head like a broken record. Duaine killed your brother.I bit my lip so hard that I could taste blood. No, I wouldn't give in to believing it. It was too vile, too absurd. But the more I told myself it was not true, the more my heart shook. And a second realization stole into my head like a midnight shadow. The story Alpha Duaine had told me of how he'd killed an heir to the throne.I had dismissed it then as another story of his ugly past, one of his scars that it seemed to give him. Now, though, with Dylan's words echoing in my head, the pieces were falling into patterns I did not wish to believe.I opened the door to

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 183

Chapter 183Lessie's POVI seethed at Dylan with angry flames, my heart racing so violently that I'm sure he could hear it. What he just said about Alpha Duaine killing my brother? I froze for a second, stuck in a state of shock. But anger churned inside me, furious and uncontainable. In an automatic move, I raised my hand and slapped him."How dare you?" I lashed out at him, angry as he cupped his cheek. "How dare you sink that low just to get me to hate him? Do you think you're clever enough? That I'll swallow whatever venom you feed my ears?" Shame on you, Dylan."Lessie, you…No, I interrupted him in midstream, leaning in towards him. "Listen to me, Dylan. If you really care for me, you'd do it with dignity, not by vomiting foul lies. My brother is not something that you'd bring up just so you could use it as leverage to make me hate Alpha Duaine. That's sick. Do you understand me? It's sick.I was trembling, my fists clenched.".Dylan tilted his head to one side, a lean smile on
