Chapter 39Lessie's POVI stopped in my tracks as I heard him call out my name. Has he been waiting for me?I walked towards him. "Were you waiting for me?" I askedHe leaned against the railing. "Yeah. I thought you’d get here earlier.""I was here early," I said, "but I forgot something, so I went back home to get it."I gave him a side-eye. "And have you been stalking me?" I asked. "Guilty," he grinned. "But not like, stalker-wannabe. You're my friend, Kayla. When something's not right, I see it."I nodded, having no idea how to respond to what he said.As we both walked across the central courtyard to our respective classes, I felt it, a chill down the nape of my neck.I instinctively looked around and saw Lena. But she was way at the far end of the courtyard, across from the doors of the east wing, surrounded by two of her ever-present friends. Her eyes were on me. No, they were both on Trent and me. Her face was cold and it looked like she could murder someone.I blinked.D
Chapter 38Lessie's POVI slammed the door close behind me as soon as I saw what I'd walked into.My hands flew up to my face. "Oh..Moon Goddess! Cover yourself up!"From across the room, Alpha Duiane's deep voice was unacceptably calm. "You walked in here. Without knocking."I kept my face turned toward the door, my eyes closed tightly. "I came in here because it's an emergency!"He didn’t say anything for a moment. Then I heard a sigh. "You can turn around now." He said. I turned slowly to face him, my hand still covering my face, just in case. Fortunately, he'd wrapped a black robe around his body to cover himself. He didn’t look embarrassed that I had walked in on him, though. If anything, he looked pleased with what I had seen.I tried not to look at him. My heart was racing for the wrong reasons. Or the right reasons. I couldn't tell anymore."Are you okay?" he asked, walking towards his bed and sitting on the side of his bed."No, I’m not fine” I said, pulling out the fo
Chapter 37Lessie's POVMy mornings started slowly. A slow stretch, a deep breath, a hesitation before the day began, just like an empty canvas I could fill. But ever since that night at the dining, everything seemed to be more outlined. My heart pounds to every little sound to every meeting and to every look as if it was filled with meaning.I never imagined peace would be like this, it felt gentle and calm. The days moved faster than I expected, each of them lugging its feet with an odd stillness inside the royal house. It had been over a week since dinner that evening. Since I saw Alpha Duiane rip the heart from a man's chest as if it was nothing. Since I sat beside him at the table and heard his calculated justification of it.But what shocked me more than the blood or the fear, was how he changed after that night. He was more nicer. Uncomfortably nice.He even smiled once, it was random, off his usual self and it unnerved me.Was it pity? Tactic? Something else? I asked
Chapter 36Author's POVThe halls of the royal house were quiet as the last rays of the sun dipped over the horizon. In a wing of the house, a file of quiet steps padded down along the tile corridor.Kayla had finally come out from her room. Her stomach had won the war against her fear, but her fingers were still trembling and her chest was still hurting a little too agonizingly. Her maid had pleaded more than once, more desperately with each try and now, with the hunger gnawing at her stomach, she decided to go eat.It was not that she wanted to see him. Indeed, the last thing she wanted was to do that. But if she starved herself to death, nothing will change. That, and she could never really know what kind of punishment Alpha Duiane would have in store for her if she broke his household rules, even starving herself to do so.She walked behind her maid down the hallway, her lips pursed, each step slower than the last. Alpha Duiane was already seated at the distant end of the
Chapter 35Lessie's POVMy stomach growled again, it had been like that for a few minutes now. I was famished.Infact I was starving. I was dizzy, lightheaded, and almost fainting. I had barely eaten since breakfast, and now the sun was well past its peak. My head throbbed badly. I had to go back home.I just needed to feel like I wasn't falling apart.I got to the mansion, as I approached the marble stairs, a low murmur reached my ears. There were voices. Masculine sounding stern and clipped in tone.I slowed down, intrigued. The sound was coming from a room nearby.I didn't know why I went closer. Maybe I was too tired to think, or maybe some part of me hoped I'd catch a glimpse of a different Alpha Duiane. But what I caught instead stopped me in my tracks. What I saw there would plague me.The entrance t was not completely closed. It was open just enough to get a a glance. First, I saw some guards with a man in their midst. The dark stone walls cast an ominous mood. T
Chapter 34Duiane's POVI walked down the hallway of the royal house quickly, each step pounding against the shiny floors. This was something that stung more than anything. Stealing to me was inconceivable, disrespectful, dishonorable, deserving of an example.I arrived at the scene in front of the shut vault hall where two guards held watch over a chained individual, he was bruised, bloody and half-conscious."Alpha Duiane," one guard greeted. "We caught him trying to break open the vault door. He was armed and only surrendered when we arrived." He bowed respectfully when he was done.I looked at the man. With his torn shirt, his stomach protruded through tattered fabric. There were bruises on his face, handcuffs chained to his wrists. He was barely alive. I hated this.I did not break rules. I did not condone greed. But I recognized that revenge was not justice. Not if there was theft involved. Theft? Killing, I could live with in war. In life, defense, war but stealing?
